Walter Salin has been fascinated by art since he was a young boy. After his studying classical, music, philosophy and jurisprudence, has dedicated his time to studying aesthetics to a great extent, advancing into a creative research.

His art started taking form at Carlo Fia’s workshop in Rovereto and in the 90’s he frequented with success the Milanese artistic environment. His work ranges from ships to drawing room literary, collaborating with Italian artists, intellectuals and critics.

Reeds jaren staat hij in de kast, deze elpee van Stanislas Tohon.
De afgelopen week werd in ene duidelijk dat hij volledig gehypet
is niet lang geleden. Er gaan prijzen tot wel € 500,- voor deze plaat.
Absurde bedragen natuurlijk en daarom krijg je hem vandaag
gewoon weer gratis hier op de GG. Het schijnt dat er passages
op voorkomen met water dums, weet jij waar ze zitten..?

It is waiting here for years, this album by Stanislas Tohon. Only
this week it became clear it hyped completely over the past time.
I heard some people pay prices up to € 500,- for it. Totally absurd
of course and that’s why we’re giving it away here at the GG
today. It seems the album contains passages with water
drumming, do you know where to find them..?

Back in September, Apple Records announced the set, which is the first Beatles release since Universal Music Group bought EMI last year. The two-disc set will feature 63 tracks, including performances and funny speech clips that were recorded during the BBC broadcasts.
One of the best aspects of the original Live at the BBC set, which came out in 1994, was that you got to hear the Beatles performing their own versions of rock classics that they didn’t formally record for their albums. This carries over to the new set and one of the highlights has to be their version of Chuck Berry’s “I’m Talking About You.” “Glad All Over,” “Sure To Fall (In Love With You)” and “Memphis, Tennessee” are some of the other songs on the set.
Since these tracks were recorded during the group’s early days, many of the songs from Please Please Me through Beatles For Sale pop up. It’s nice to hear tracks like “I Saw Her Standing There” and “I Want To Hold Your Hand” performed with raw intensity, without overdubs. These versions also give you a peek at how the group sounded live without the annoying screaming fans.

CHICKN λόγια για το “Wowsers!”, το δεύτερο άλμπουμ τους

Το έχω ξαναπεί. Τραβάω ζόρι με τις ολοκληρωτικές αλλαγές, με τις αισθητικές ανατροπές από δίσκο σε δίσκο. Όταν κάποιος μου συστήνεται ως Α, δυσκολεύομαι να τον καταλάβω, όταν ο ίδιος θα μου συστηθεί ως Β. Θέλω το Β (αν υπάρχει τέτοιο), να έχει προέλθει από το Α, μέσα από μια λογική σειρά βημάτων, αλλιώς μού φαίνεται κάπως… σαν άλμα στο κενό. Εγώ δεν τα πιστεύω αυτά τα… περί κρίσιμου δεύτερου άλμπουμ, τα περί… επιβεβαιωτικού τρίτου κ.ο.κ. Ακούω κάθε φορά από το μηδέν και βγάζω άφοβα τα συμπεράσματά μου. Υπάρχουν δεκάδες συγκροτήματα στη μουσική ιστορία, που έχουν κάνει μέτριο ή αδιάφορο δεύτερο άλμπουμ, για να συνεχίσουν μ’ ένα τρίτο πολύ καλύτερο κ.λπ. Αυτά… παλαιά, στα sixties και τα seventiesκυρίως (εκεί όπου αναφέρονται και οι Chickn), αλλά σήμερα… τι μπορεί να σημαίνει ένα διαφορετικό δεύτερο άλμπουμ; Τι σχέση μπορεί να έχει το “Spooky Two” των Spooky Tooth και το “Mad Shadows” των Mott the Hoople(τα δεύτερα άλμπουμ τους είναι αυτά) με το “Ceremony” ή με το “All the Young Dudes” (είναι κάποια επόμενά τους); Και κατά πόσον το “Wowsers! / The smell alone is fabulous, but the taste” [Inner Ear, 2018] των Chickn μπορεί ν’ αποτελεί συνέχεια του πρώτου άλμπουμ τους (2016) και υπό ποίαν έννοια θα μπορούσε να προεξοφλεί το τρίτο τους… όταν και άμα υπάρξει; Είναι κάποια ερωτήματα αυτά…

Το λέω από την αρχή. Το “Wowsers!” δεύτερο άλμπουμ των Chickn είναι τελείως διαφορετικό από το προηγούμενό τους – και για να το πάω ένα βήμα παραπέρα θα πω πως είναι λιγότερο ενδιαφέρον. Ξεκάθαρα πράγματα. Το λέω αυτό, για να μην υπάρχουν παρανοήσεις. Αυτό δεν σημαίνει βεβαίως πως πρόκειται για ένα «κακό» άλμπουμ. Δε λέω αυτό. Έχει και το “Wowsers!” το στυλ και το ψάξιμό του, δεν υπάρχει θέμα, όμως δεν υπάρχει και σύγκριση με το “Chickn”. Εξηγώ, όσο μπορώ…

Τα νέα τραγούδια των Chickn, από μουσικής πλευράς είναι αλλοπρόσαλλα. Όταν κάτι δεν αναφέρεται κάπου γερά, αλλά ακουμπάει από ’δω κι από ’κει… περιφερειακά, τότε δεν αφήνει στίγμα. Ή εν πάση περιπτώσει το στίγμα του είναι θολό.

Δεν μπορώ να καταλάβω, εννοώ, τι ακριβώς ήθελαν να κάνουν οι Chicknεδώ. Να φτιάξουν, τηρουμένων όσων αναλογιών θέλετε, ένα σημερινό… “Sgt. Pepper’s”; Να επιχειρήσουν να διαστρέψουν τα τραγούδια τους, να τα κάνουν να ακούγονται διαφορετικά το ένα από το άλλο, πιο μπερδεμένα και πιο αυτοαναφορικά… για ποιο λόγο; Γιατί τα πράγματα να μην είναι ξεκάθαρα, με αρχή, μέση και τέλος; Ποιος ο λόγος για μια τέτοια ποικιλομορφία, η οποία, χωρίς να πατάει κάπου γερά, μοιάζει και είναι εντελώς μετέωρη; Τι ψάξιμο έχει επιχειρηθεί τέλος πάντων, και γιατί να καταλήγει σε κάτι που ενώ το ακούς και το ξανακούς στο τέλος ψάχνεσαι για να δεις τι σου έχει μείνει;

Ποπ λοιπόν από τη μια μεριά, η ψυχεδελική βρετανική (κιθαριστική) ποπ των sixties και από ’κει και κάτω το… άπλωμα ενός χεριού προς το σκληρό glam rock των Mott the Hoople ας πούμε (δεν τους ανέφερα τυχαίως παραπάνω) και το theatrical rock συγκροτημάτων όπως οι Sensational Alex Harvey Band και οι… κακόμοιροι Cockney Rebel. Ok, κάπου παρεισφρέει και κάτι από punk, αλλά αυτά είναι ψιλά… (Εξάλλου και το glam υπήρξε βασική επιρροή για το punk). Ρε, εδώ έγραφα σε σχέση με το προηγούμενο άλμπουμ των Chickn για… early Pink Floyd, Doors, Van der Graaf Generator, Ginger Baker’s Air Force και Jade Warrior –τόσα πολλά και τόσα θαυμαστά στοιχεία στις μουσικές τους, που έφερναν στο νου μου μεγάλα συγκροτήματα του χθες και κυρίως τόσο δημιουργικά αφομοιωμένα από ένα δικό μας γκρουπ– πώς καταλήξαμε να μιλάμε τώρα για σχεδόν… παρακμιακές καταστάσεις; Παρακμιακός ο Alex Harvey; – θα πoυν κάποιοι. Ναι, παρακμιακός, αλλά με δικό του στυλ-καλούπι, που δεν το είχε κανένας άλλος και πιστός από ένα σημείο και πέρα στις αισθητικές αρχές του, που τις βάθαινε συνεχώς. Δεν υπάρχει σύγκριση…

Λοιπόν, για να καταλήξω σιγά-σιγά και μετά από τέσσερις απανωτές ακροάσεις. Το “Wowsers!” από τα πέμπτο κομμάτι (“Chickn tribe reprise”) και μετά… ανεβαίνει, στο έβδομο (“China must win”) πιάνει τη δική του κορυφή, στέκεται καλά στο “Elevational love of Frank Zappa” (ναι, και το seventies rock του Zappa είναι οπωσδήποτε μιαν ακόμη αναφορά και ας εμφανίζεται κι αυτή… ξεκάρφωτη) και ξαναπέφτει στο “Cloud over Athens” – αλλά από ’κει κάτω δεν υπάρχει τίποτ’ άλλο, καθώς έχουμε φθάσει στο τέλος πια.

Ο Άγγελος Κράλλης [ψυχή των Chickn τραγουδιστής, στιχουργός, κιθαρίστας, πληκτράς και βεβαίως συνθέτης, μαζί και με τα υπόλοιπα μέλη(;)] είναι ένας άνθρωπος με αδιαμφισβήτητο ταλέντο και με σωστά ακούσματα, αλλά έχω τη γνώμη πως στο “Wowsers!” κάπως… κάπου… χάθηκε.

Τα πράγματα στο rock είναι πιο απλά… νομίζω. Για να μην πω πως είμαι σίγουρος, δημιουργώντας τετελεσμένα. Και οι ταλαντούχοι, όπως ο Κράλλης, αυτό θα πρέπει να το αντιλαμβάνονται και όντας σωστά προσανατολισμένοι να βρίσκουν στο τσακ-μπαμ εκείνες τις διόδους, που θα τους οδηγούν στα ξέφωτα. Όλα τα ουσιαστικά-τυπικά υπάρχουν και με το παραπάνω. Όρεξη και διάθεση για σημερινή ροκ προσφορά, καλοί μουσικοί (Παντελής Καρασεβδάς, Χρήστος Μπεκίρης, Άξιος Ζαφειράκος, Ντον Σταυρίνος, Χάρης Νείλας), γερό τεχνικό τμήμα, για μείξεις, mastering, παραγωγή. Ένα συμμάζεμα στις μουσικές ιδέες χρειάζεται μόνο. Ένας περιορισμός των χαοτικών προσεγγίσεων, που αδυνατίζουν το κεντρικό νόημα…
