oy Wood is an English singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He was particularly successful in the 1960s and 1970s as member and co-founder of the Move, Electric Light Orchestra and Wizzard. As a songwriter, he contributed a number of hits to the repertoire of these bands. The BBC has described Wood as being “responsible for some of the most memorable sounds of the Seventies” and “credited as playing a major role in the Glam Rock, Psychedelic and Prog Rock movements”. In 2008, Wood was awarded an honorary doctorate for his contribution to rock and pop by the University of Derby. In 2015, his long and eclectic career was recognised with the “Outer Limits” award at the Progressive Music Awards in London. Wood was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 as a member of Electric Light Orchestra.

Collects five of his original albums, in card LP replica sleeves! Features The Move’s “Message From The Country” (1971), ELO’s “Electric Light Orchestra” (1971) and Wizzard’s “Wizzard Brew” (1973), plus his solo releases “Boulders” (1973) and “On The Road Again” (1979).

Neil Sturgeon & the Infomanics’ debut release is called ‘Geography & Luck’, an album which ranges from Americana to pop with more than passing nod to folk rock. The twelve track album produced by Raymond McGinley, of Teenage Fanclub fame, features a wide range of Glasgow musicians which allows it to draw on a variety of high-quality vocalists and instrumentalists. Their talents are highlighted throughout the album without ever overwhelming the storytelling vocals.

Compared to Neil Sturgeon’s music from his other band The Goldenhour, the album is a more mellow and acoustic album that wouldn’t have fitted the garage rock sound of The Goldenhour.

The single ‘NY Reflection Song’ is a true Americana piece with a great banjo picked solo, a reminiscing song about a lost friendship in New York City and definitely the one to get your toes tapping. Compare that with ‘Ride the Tide’, an acoustic-pop piece, about not realising you would miss someone until they left, although having the largest range of musicians compared to the other tracks, it is the most understated track on the record.

Overall, there is a well-balanced mix of songs on the album, with something for everyone on it. It is an album that deserves to be heard by a wider audience, as its appeal covers so many genres.

Πέρυσι, πάνω-κάτω τέτοια εποχή, γράφαμε για το 7ιντσο των2 By Bukowski “Hot summer / Beast’s breath” και νατώρα, ένα χρόνο αργότερα, ένα δεύτερο δισκάκι (πάντα στην Inner Ear) με τα κομμάτια “Follow you home” και “Fiend for sleep” να μπαίνει στο πλατώ. Διαβάζω, μάλιστα, πως θ’ ακολουθήσει και τρίτο… Ωραία…

Το electro παραμένει πάντα το βασικό πεδίο των 2 By Bukowski (Αχιλλέας Χαρμπίλας – Γιώργος Μαλαμίδης), όσο και αν αυτό μετατοπίζεται, εδώ, σε κάτι περισσότερο «σκοτεινό».

Λέμε κατ’ αρχάς για το πρώτο κομμάτι, που ξεπηδά μέσα από ένα πλέγμα χαμηλού θορύβου και με φωνή από την Kid Moxie σε στυλ Nico. Το τραγούδι, θέλω να πω, πως έχει μια «βελβετική» χροιά, προσαρμοσμένη φυσικά στα eighties και από ’κει και πέρα στα σημερινά μέτρα. Μάλιστα, προοδευτικά, το κομμάτι «ανεβαίνει», κυρίως μέσω των αναλογικών synths και της γενικότερης στιβαρής electro-rock ανάπτυξης, πάντα σε αργό προς μέσο tempoκαι με άνεση στα κιθαριστικά breaks, όπως και στις υπόλοιπες synth συμβολές. Στο τρίτο, δε, και τελευταίο μέρος του, χοντρικά στο τελευταίο ενάμισι λεπτό (το trackδιαρκεί 5:08), τα ρυθμικά στοιχεία είναι ακόμη πιο έντονα, με το “Follow you home” να αποκτά ακόμη πιο επικά χαρακτηριστικά. Πολύ καλό.

Flip-side, τώρα, είναι το “Fiend for sleep”, που διαρκεί περί τα εννέα λεπτά (να πούμε πως το δισκάκι στρίβει στις 33 και 1/3 στροφές, καθώς οι διάρκειες είναι μεγάλες). Κι εδώ ένας συνδυασμός, στην αρχή, electro-rock και noise (σαν ρυθμική γραμμή), με ωραία, στην πορεία rockανάπτυξη (η κιθάρα παίζει πρωτεύοντα ρόλο, όσον αφορά στην αποτύπωση τής μελωδίας) και σκληροτράχηλα «χεντριξοειδή» ξεσπάσματα πάνω από ηλεκτρονικά, που συντελούν, γενικώς, προς μια ξεγυρισμένη και… αδίσταχτη «kraut-ιά».

Τριακόσια αριθμημένα 7ιντσα και… το έχουμε ξαναπεί; Δεν είμαι σίγουρος… Αναμένουμε άλμπουμ από τους 2 By Bukowski…
