ACT MUSIC + VISION νέες κυκλοφορίες με νόημα από Iiro Rantala, Benjamin Schmid - Andreas Martin Hofmeir και Michael Wollny

Για τον Iiro Rantala, που αποτελεί μια από τις «κολώνες» της ACT, έχουμε γράψει κι άλλες φορές στο δισκορυχείον. Το πιο πρόσφατο CD τού Rantala είναι ζωντανά ηχογραφημένο την 28/4/2017 κάπου στη Βρέμη, συλλαμβάνοντας τον φινλανδό πιανίστα στο ίδιο πάλκο με την ορχήστρα Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen(DKB) και μάλιστα σ’ ένα ρεπερτόριο ποικίλο.
Το άλμπουμ ξεκινά με δύο συνθέσεις του Rantala, ακολουθεί Mozart (το πιάνο κονσέρτο no.21, c major, kv 467), μετά Bernstein (“Candide overture”), μετά δύο ακόμη συνθέσεις του Rantala (η μία αφιερωμένη στον Esbjörn Svensson), για να κλείσει το σετ με το “Imagine” του John Lennon.
Φρονώ πως οι μεγάλες στιγμές του CD είναι εκείνες στις οποίες ο Rantala (μαζί με την DKB) ερμηνεύει δικές του συνθέσεις. Ιδίως το εννιάλεπτο “Freedom” είναι καταπληκτικό –μια romanceμε έντονα ρυθμικά στοιχεία, που βρίσκει εδώ μιαν απίθανη ενορχήστρωση–, ενώ εξαιρετικούς βρίσκω τους θρήνους, κατά μίαν έννοια, στον Pekka Pohjola (το εισαγωγικό κομμάτι) και στον Esbjörn Svensson. Κάπως αλλοπρόσαλλο μου φάνηκε το “Imagine”, αλλά ok, το συγκεκριμένο κομμάτι έχει διασκευαστεί χιλιάδες φορές και κάπου έχει χαθεί πλέον η μπάλα, ενώ για το πιάνο-κονσέρτο του Mozartδεν έχω να πω κάτι ιδιαίτερο – ίσως μόνο πως δεν κολλάει και τόσο με τα υπόλοιπα tracks.
BENJAMIN SCHMID & ANDREAS MARTIN HOFMEIR: Stradihumpa [9864-2 ACT, 2018]
Ένας μάλλον απροσδόκητος συνδυασμός οργάνων, που έχει όμως τον τρόπο να σε συναρπάζει. Λέμε για το βιολί του Benjamin Schmid και την τούμπα του Andreas Martin Hofmeir, οι οποίοι συνεργάζονται εδώ σ’ ένα άλμπουμ γεμάτο με ηχητικές εκπλήξεις. Με ρεπερτόριο κυρίως σύγχρονο, συνθέσεις δηλαδή του αυστριακού κοντραμπασίστα Georg Breinschmid, του γερμανού βιολιστή Florian Willeitner, του επίσης Αυστριακού Christof Dienz, του Ολλανδού Jan Koetsier, ακόμη και του Βραζιλιάνου João Bosco, αλλά και με κάποιο κλασικό υλικό –καθώς στο “Stradihumpa” υπάρχουν συνθέσεις του πολωνού συνθέτη και βιολιστή Henryk Wieniawski (1835-1880), του Νορβηγού Johan Halvorsen (1864-1935) και του Ιταλού Antonio Bazzini(1818-1897)– οι Schmidκαι Hofmeir ξεπερνούν το αναμενόμενο, υπερπηδούν με άνεση το προφανές, προσφέροντας ένα συναρπαστικό ακρόαμα με πλήθος «εκπλήξεων», με εντυπωσιακά παιξίματα (όχι μόνο έγχορδα και πνευστά, αλλά ακόμη και… κρουστά), με δύσκολες τεχνικές multiphonics (στην τούμπα – όχι σε οποιοδήποτε όργανο), ισορροπώντας σε πολύ λεπτά σημεία, κάπου ανάμεσα στις μουσικές «δωματίου», στις avant παρεκκλίσεις και στον ελεύθερο ή λιγότερο ελεύθερο αυτοσχεδιασμό.
Έξοχα κομμάτια, όλα ένα-κι-ένα, με πρώτο ανάμεσά τους, ίσως, το “Schnaubulescu bandini” του Georg Breinschmid.
MICHAEL WOLLNY TRIO: Oslo [9863-2 ACT, 2018]
Ναι, το τρίο του Michael Wollny αποτελείται από τονίδιο στο πιάνο, τον Christian Weber στο κοντραμπάσο καιτον Eric Schaefer σε ντραμς (και live electronics σ’ ένα track), αλλά στην παρούσα εγγραφή (Rainbow Studio Όσλο – Jan Erik Kongshaug) δεν είναι μόνο του, καθώς δίπλα του παρατάσσεται τοπολυμελές Norwegian Wind Ensemble (υπό τον Geir Lysne). Το αποτέλεσμα αυτής της συνεργασίας είναι η καταγραφή μιας jazz με… ευγενή και θωπευτικά χαρακτηριστικά, που κυλάει, μάλλον, σε αργές γραμμές και με ιδιαίτερη στόχευση στην οικοδόμηση ενός κλίματος… υψηλής αισθητικής, που να μην μένει, όμως, μόνο σ’ αυτήν.
Θέλω να πω πως εδώ δεν έχουμε ένα ψυχρό-ωραίο άλμπουμ, αλλά ένα CD με δυνατές μελωδίες και βεβαίως με άψογα παιξίματα, ικανό να συναρπάσει κάθε μουσικόφιλο (είτε τον απλό είτε τον πιο απαιτητικό). Με συνθέσεις κυρίως πρωτότυπες –υπάρχουν και versions σε Fauré, Hindemith, Debussy και Einojuhani Rautavaara– και με τη μόνιμη διάθεση του Wollny να πειραματίζεται με ήχους, όργανα, διαστήματα, σιωπές, εντάσεις, χρόνους κ.λπ. το αποτέλεσμα, στο “Oslo”, δεν μπορεί παρά να είναι εντυπωσιακό. Και είναι. Μάλιστα το 12λεπτο bonus track “The whiteness of the whale” λειτουργεί και σαν επιτομή του συνολικότερου ηχητικού σκηνικού, αφού εδώ ακούς από σύγχρονη jazz και avant, μέχρι rock, improv και ηλεκτρονικά.
MICHAEL WOLLNY TRIO LIVE: Wartburg [9862-2 ACT, 2018]
Δεύτερο στη σειρά CD τού τρίο τού γερμανού πιανίστα Michael Wollny – ο οποίος έχει πάντα δίπλα τουτους Christian Weber κοντραμπάσο και Eric Schaefer ντραμς (και έξτρα σε τέσσερα tracks τον σοπρανίστα Emile Parisien). Ο λόγος, βεβαίως, για το “Wartburg”, ένα άλμπουμ που είναι ζωντανά ηχογραφημένο στο φερώνυμο κάστρο, κάπου στην κεντρική Γερμανία, τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2017.
Βασικά, εδώ, ο Wollny αποδίδει πρωτότυπο υλικό (συντεθιμένο από τον ίδιο και τα υπόλοιπα μέλη τού τρίο του), με τις λίγες versions (Scott Walker, Paul Hindemith, Bob Brookmeyer) να φανερώνουν, οπωσδήποτε, κάτι από τις επιρροές και τις αναφορές του.
Η ατμόσφαιρα στο “Wartburg” δεν διαφέρει και τόσο από εκείνη του “Oslo”, γεγονός οπωσδήποτε αναμενόμενο.
Υπάρχει μια φυσική άπλα, και απλότητα, στις συνθέσεις τού τρίο – κάτι που δεν συνδέεται, αναγκαστικώς, με τις μεγάλες διάρκειες. Ακόμη και στα 2λεπτα, όσο και στα 3λεπτα tracks ο Michael Wollnyκαι οι συνεργάτες του βρίσκουν τον τρόπο να προβάλλουν μελωδίες ικανές να δημιουργούν έντονες συναισθηματικές καταστάσεις και τούτο δίχως να εκβιάζουν… παικτικές ιδιοτροπίες, περφεξιονισμούς και τα ρέστα.
Οι άνθρωποι έχουν βιώσει την ουσία της… ευρωπαϊκής τζαζ σύνθεσης και επί αυτής, αγέρωχα, βαδίζουν.

VA – Mojo Presents Acid Drops, Spacedust & Flying Saucers (2001)

Lovingly compiled by those scholarly scribes at Mojo magazine (and with excellent sleeve notes from genre connoisseur Jon Savage), the 72-track, four-CD box set Acid Drops. Spacedust and Flying Saucers is a veritable encylopedia of British 60s psychedelic pop. Come, let us leave our monochrome 21st-century adult lives and climb the technicolour loft-ladder into an enchanted and forgotten childhood attic of benzedrine bedtime stories, liquorice allsorts, toy trains, rainbow trees and–in the case of Mandrake Paddle Steamer–strange men walking across the lawn. As Acid Drops correctly points out, American psychedelia was all about napalm guitars, carbon monoxide poisoning and “they’re coming to take me away to Vietnam” psychosis. However, its cuddly, post-ration book British sibling was more concerned with sniffing the school chemistry set, eating sweets and something or other to do with gardening. Thus, beat-band blokes from such unlikely places as Scunthorpe, Hove and Hounslow set sail for new musical horizons–possibly on flying carpets made out of flutes and mellotrons–with the pioneering zeal of Victorian free-thinkers. Aside from cult cornerstone classics by The Poets, Timebox, Kaleidoscope, David McWilliams, Amazing Friendly Apple (whose “Magician” really does sound like the work of mysterious robed men with long white beards) and World Of Oz (although surely the pervy nursery rhyme “Muffin Man” would have been a better choice than “Peter’s Birthday”), Acid Drops boasts plenty of familiar hit parade fare from The Move, Donovan, The Yardbirds. The Hollies et al, plus obscurities galore. Who, exactly, were proto-punk freak-beat exponents Allen Pound’s Get Rich and how come they sounded like Adam and The Ants 11 years before the event? Bamboo Shoot? Nope, us neither–nor the compilers. With such notable absentees as Svensk and Dantalion’s Chariot, a whole tangential area of weird-folk to explore and with EMI holding the magic key to the locked cupboard of early Floyd outtakes, here’s hoping this essential, un-put-downable box set is the first in a very, very long series.

After a 3-year hiatus, Emilie Mover returns with a brand-new album of original songs. Emilie delivers a mesmerizing performance, with a sound often likened to Billie Holiday, Cat Power and songwriting in the vein of classic American songbook meets Bob Dylan and Harry Nilsson. Her sixth studio album, Night Owl showcases the beauty in her simple and wise-beyond-her-times approach to songwriting. Mover’s vocals are both captivating and calming, leading the listener through a range of ups, downs, and arounds on the 12-track release. Taking on a multifaceted role, Emilie also co-produced the album alongside fellow musicians Blake Mackay and Andrew Furman. Jesse MacMillan, Anna Sudac, Noel Bryant and Sean Dean (The Sadies) and Christine Bougie (Bahamas) make up the rest of the talent heard on Night Owl (with a token guest appearance from renowned saxophonist Bob Mover, Emilie’s father, of course), which was recorded at Bathouse Studio in Kingston, ON.
The album has already gained attention in Canada and abroad, with her single “Fallin’ In” recently featured as the Song of the Week on CBC’s Here & Now with Gill Deacon. During the interview, Mover talks about the hiatus and opens up about the relationship between her and music, “I’ve always been a sensitive person, but living life and learning how to live life has its struggles”. Providing a window into her creative and personal process, she relates to so many that mirror her own experiences. These experiences are reflected on through her nuanced lyrics and diverse composition and arrangement.
