Although the foundations of Latin Jazz were consolidated in the 1940s and 50s, there is evidence that the inclusion of Afro-Cuban sounds into early Jazz dates back to the Jazz played in New Orleans at the beginning of the 20th century. To this regard, Jazz pioneer “Jelly Roll” Morton used the term “Latin Tinge” as a direct reference to the influence that the Cuban Habanera, a popular genre in the dance halls of Cuba at the end of the 19th century, had in the making of some of the local Jazz expressions that were performed in New Orleans.
Along those lines, the proximity between New Orleans and Havana also allowed Cuban musicians to borrow elements from that early American Jazz, facilitating both musical styles to flow together. Whereas Jazz in the United States arose from black blues and spiritual traditions, in Cuba their black musical traditions were preserved in a religion, Santeria, henceforward, the marriage of both styles became a call and response, an improvisational approach to a music that was highly charged and interactive, something they in Cuba call “descarga”.
That fond and well documented history led a group of master musicians, under the direction of Calixto Oviedo, to form the Cuban Jazz Train and revive those olden times, improvising new melodies and harmonies and danceable rhythms to generate their own “Afro-Cuban Tinge”.

Τούτο το CD, το «…άντε να λύσουμε / παραδοσιακά και έντεχνα τραγούδια» [Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλίας, 2017] της Παιδικής Χορωδίας ‘Δημητριάς’, πήγε στην παλιά διεύθυνση και γειτονιά και από κει στο κοντινό ταχυδρομείο κι έτσι έφτασε αργά στα χέρια μου. Πάλι καλά, γιατί θα μπορούσε να επιστραφεί στον αποστολέα του ή και να χαθεί… Όμως περί τίνος πρόκειται; Διαβάζω από το μέσα μέρος του τετρασέλιδου cover:

«Στο πλαίσιο υλοποίησης του προγράμματος Ένταξη και Εκπαίδευση των Παιδιών Ρομά στην Περιφέρεια Θεσσαλίας (2016-2018), με φορέα το Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλίας, εντάχθηκε και η δράση ηχογράφησης και κυκλοφορίας του παρόντος CD, σε συνεργασία με την παιδική χορωδία Δημητριάς και τον υπεύθυνό της κ. Μπαντελά. Η ηχογράφηση του CD αποτυπώνει τη φιλοδοξία όλων των εμπλεκομένων να αναδειχθεί, για εκπαιδευτικούς σκοπούς, η δυναμική της παιδικής δημιουργίας μέσα από μια πολυπολιτισμική οπτική».

Η παιδική χορωδία Δημητριάς, που δεν αποτελείται μόνον από Ρομά, ξεκίνησε πριν 4-5 χρόνια ως πρωτοβουλία της Ιεράς Μητρόπολης Δημητριάδος. Επί του προκειμένου δέκα τέσσερα κορίτσια και αγόρια μπήκαν στο στούντιο για να ηχογραφήσουν μια ντουζίνα τραγούδια, παραδοσιακά, αλλά και έντεχνα, όπως και λαϊκά. Τραγούδια που ακούγονται και από τη σημερινή νεολαία (το «Αν είσαι ένα αστέρι» του Βέρτη – μεταξύ μας… θα προτιμούσα Παντελίδη), αλλά και από την παλαιότερη (Ορφέας Περίδης, το «Ένα καράβι παλιό σαπιοκάραβο» που τραγούδησε ο Βασ. Παπακωνσταντίνου). Τραγούδια όπως το «Ανεστάκι» (Νίκος Τάτσης – Λευτέρης Παπαδόπουλος – Χάρις Αλεξίου), αλλά και το «Λόγια κλειδωμένα», που έγινε γνωστό από το Βασίλη Παϊτέρη. Στο ρεπερτόριο της χορωδίας θέση έχουν ακόμη το γνωστό μας “Ederlezi”, τα «Λιανοχορταρούδια», το «Από ξένο τόπο κι απ’ αλαργινό», το ρομάνικο «Λουλουντί» κ.ά. Να συμπληρώσουμε επίσης κάτι πολύ βασικό, πως στην εγγραφή συμμετέχουν και όργανα, μια πλήρης ορχήστρα κοντολογίς αποτελούμενη από κλαρίνο, βιολί, νέι, φλογέρες, πλήκτρα, κανονάκι, ακορντεόν, λαούτο, κιθάρα, μπάσο και κρουστά.

Η προσπάθεια είναι αξιέπαινη – δεν υπάρχει λόγος. Μπορεί να είναι παντού διακριτός ένας ερασιτεχνισμός (κάτι που φαίνεται ακόμη και στο εξώφυλλο), όμως εδώ μεγαλύτερη σημασία έχει ο σκοπός, η προσπάθεια, να συνταιριάξουν και να συνταξιδέψουν μέσω της μουσικής παιδιά Ρομά και μη, ερμηνεύοντας κοινό ρεπερτόριο, γνωστό και αγαπημένο και από τα δύο μέρη.

Δεν έχω να πω κάτι για τα παιδιά, ούτε για την ορχήστρα, ούτε για την ηχητική παραγωγή, θα πω όμως πως στην έκδοση θα άξιζε να υπάρχει ως booklet το κείμενο του Κωστή Δρυγιανάκη, που συνοδεύει το CD σαν δελτίο Τύπου. Άλλες δυο ή τέσσερις σελίδες δεν θα κόστιζαν τίποτα…

As the world continues to spin out of control, with the absolute worst person we have to offer seated stupidly and arrogantly behind the wheel (a delusional old twit who seems to deliberately aim the vehicle toward the cliff while we all scream from the back seat), I am more and more grateful for good music, and the comfort and solace and understanding and even reason it offers. In a time when the country seems hell-bent on its own destruction, it’s good to hear from individuals who are determined to take things in a better direction, or at least try, and to remind us we are not alone in this frightening void. One new release that I am really enjoying is Southbound from singer and songwriter Bob Rea. This album features all original material, written or co-written by Bob Rea. Joining him on this release are Mike Daly on steel guitar and dobro, Steve Daly on guitar and banjo (Steve Daly also produced the album), Michael Webb on keyboards and accordion, Herschel Van Dyke on drum and percussion, Aaron Shaffer-Hais on drums, Dan Eubanks on bass, Jeremy Holt on mandolin, Lois Mahalia on backing vocals, and Laura Mae Socks on backing vocals. This disc is giving me momentary relief from the horror show blasting from the nation’s capital.
