Michelle Mandico – Ptarmigan (2018)
320 kbps | 103 MB | LINKS
It’s a style of folk music that is unmistakably western, evoking images of picturesque, snowy mountainsides with each serene step forward. Yet, subtle tinges of Nashville twang pervade Ptarmigan from a distance, such as in the pedal steel that carefully dances through the album’s beautiful opening number, “Water Bearer”. Mandico’s knack for crafting songs that carry gifts of nature along with them is her special talent and one that doesn’t seem to come along too often. Mandico wears her heart on her sleeve and rends others’ with it, but there’s something more to it, too—a vivid human consciousness that imbues itself into Ptarmigan’s every thread.

Dawn and Hawkes – The Other Side (2018)
320 kbps | 84 MB | LINKS
Since their 2015 full-length debut “Yours and Mine,” Austin duo Miranda Dawn and Chris Hawkes have had quite a few adventures, including a year spent on the road in a converted van and a trip to Australia as part of the Austin-based House of Songs project. That’s quite a turn from their first steps as a duo, which included an appearance on NBC’s “The Voice” after their 2012 debut EP. “The Other Side” offers 10 new tracks of sweet folk-rock based on acoustic instruments and rich vocal harmonies. If instantly appealing tunes such as “Highway” and “Horizon Line” feel rooted in the singer-songwriter heyday of the early 1970s, they also fit well into the modern-day indie-folk revival. The bluesy “Early in the Morning” is an intriguing foray into bluesy territory, name-checking fellow local troubadours Hayes Carll and Ray Wylie Hubbard as its tale unfolds of a songwriter who lost his way.
John Mark McMillan – The Mercury Sessions (2018)
320 kbps | 134 MB | LINKS
Singer-songwriter John Mark McMillan has just released his latest project, The Mercury Sessions, with a second volume The Lightning Sessions to follow. Both releases feature completely reimagined versions of songs from his full-length solo album Mercury & Lightning which released last year, with new acoustic/symphonic arrangements and new collaborations.
For The Mercury Sessions, McMillan has invited singer-songwriter Joy Williams, formerly of the Grammy Award-winning duo The Civil Wars, who performs on the track “Wilderlove,” as well as McMillan’s own wife Sarah who sings on “Death In Reverse.” Aside from the special guests, the album also features song stories and commentary for each song.
Explaining the thought process behind the new Sessions-releases, McMillan says, “I have a friend who says songs are never finished, just released. A recording is just a snapshot – a picture of what a song was at a point in time.”
“But they continue to grow, change and find new meaning in new light,” he says. “So it’s always exciting to reimagine a tune! This is why the ‘sessions records’ are exciting to me. We get to peel back some layers and take a new look.”
