Two years after releasing Weight of the World, the sophomore recording which earned attention from NPR: All Songs Considered, a #3 slot on the Billboard Bluegrass Charts, and took them on tour all over the US, UK, and Australia, 10 String Symphony felt the desire to expand their acoustic, stripped down sound. On July 13th, the band will release Generation Frustration, produced by Kris Drever of the Scottish band LAU. The new album digs even deeper into the potential for experimentation with stringed instruments while highlighting new depths in the pair’s original songwriting. Unafraid of pushing boundaries, the resulting songs are as challenging as they are beautiful. Today, American Songwriter Magazine exclusively premiered the first single, “One Way Telephone,” an “…affecting ballad,” noting that the “…two Nashville musicians have built complex worlds of sound from just a handful of instruments– two fiddles… with the occasional five-string banjo.”
Named for their unique instrumentation of two five string fiddles alternated with a five-string banjo, 10 String Symphony is the collaboration between GRAMMY nominated fiddle player Christian Sedelmyer (The Jerry Douglas Band), and acclaimed songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rachel Baiman. Since their inception in 2012, the duo has gained the attention of NPR’s Jewly Hight, who listed them among “The Newest and Most Promising Voices in Americana” for their unique and compelling vocal and string arrangements, which are at once traditionally informed yet completely avant-garde.

One of soul music s foremost singer-songwriters for over 40 years, the late George Jackson is always a favourite among those who buy their southern soul music on Kent. Over the past 10 years, Kent have put out five strong-selling CDs of George’s work from between 1966 and 1974 all of them containing material that has mostly never been available commercially. It’s been some while since they last brought you anything from George but after a lengthy and exhaustive trawl of the Fame tape inventory, with many long hours spent identifying tapes on which no vocalists were credited, Kent is delighted to bring you a fourth and final volume of George’s wonderful Fame recordings. Leaving Your Homework Undone brings together 24 previously unheard and unissued tracks that were recorded between 1968 and 1971. Some are demos, most feature the classic second FAME rhythm section that is generally known as The Swampers; all are pretty great. Even the most ardent Jackson completist will never have heard most of these songs before. Among the more familiar tracks are George’s original versions of A Man And A Half, Never In Public and I’m Gonna Hold On, songs that were later cut commercially by Wilson Pickett, Candi Staton and George himself. In the years since Volume 3 of George’s Fame recordings appeared, Kent have frequently been asked if there would be a fourth volume and they are sure that all southern soul fans will find that the lengthy archival research that went into Leaving Your Homework Undone has been worthwhile.
