Oh Sees, the noisy California psych-rock outfit formerly known as Thee Oh Sees and also sometimes as just OCS but always featuring the maniacally productive John Dwyer, have announced yet another new album. Smote Reverser follows up last November’s Orc (as Oh Sees) and last August’s Memory of a Cut Off Head (as OCS).

First single “Overthrown” jams a dose of heavy metal skull-crushery into Oh Sees’ typically frenetic style, and the latest album’s cover art leans further into the theme with a painting of a dragon looming over a burning city. It looks like the cover of a fantasy novel, which coincidentally is artist Matt Stawicki’s main gig.

We Banjo 3, an award-winning band from Galway, Ireland, will release their fourth studio recording, Haven.

Featuring banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, percussion and vocals, We Banjo 3’s sound is an infectious blend of traditional Irish Music with Americana, bluegrass, and a hint of pop, affectionately described as “Celtgrass.”

We Banjo 3 comprises two sets of brothers, Enda & Fergal Scahill and Martin & David Howley, who are among the most celebrated and distinguished musicians to come out of Ireland in recent years. Martin Howley is a 7-time “All Ireland” banjo and mandolin champion. Enda Scahill, an author on Irish banjo techniques, holds 4 “All Ireland” titles. Multi-instrumentalist Fergal Scahill is one of the most acclaimed fiddlers in Irish music, with a growing international reputation, and “All Ireland” titles on fiddle and bodhran. David Howley, with “All-Ireland” titles on guitar and banjo, is the group’s vocalist and guitarist known for his showmanship and deeply emotive vocals. Both Howleys now call Nashville home.

Haven was produced by We Banjo 3 and co-produced with Frank Marchand (Bob Mould, Gaelic Storm) and Grammy-winning guitarist, Bryan Sutton (Ricky Skaggs, Dixie Chicks, Béla Fleck). Marchand recorded and mixed the record at Waterford Digital Studios in Millersville, MD. It was mastered by Eric Boulanger (Green Day, Neil Young, Selena Gomez) at The Bakery in Los Angeles, CA. In addition to Sutton on guitar, additional guest players include: Scott Mulvahill, Mark Fain and Trevor Hutchinson, upright bass; Jodie Bremaneson, bass guitar; Jeff Taylor, piano, organ; Erin Snedecor, cello; Jon Lampley, trumpet; Dan White, saxophone; Chris Ott, trombone; and Grammy-nominated Sierra Hull, vocals.

GAYE SU AKYOL: İstikrarlı Hayal Hakikattir [Glitterbeat / DUNGANGA, 2018]

Είναι κάποιοι που παραλληλίζουν την Τουρκάλα (από την Κωνσταντινούπολη) Gaye Su Akyol με την Björk… και δεν ξέρω από τι ακριβώς κινούμενοι. Πάντως όχι λόγω της μουσικής της. Ίσως εξαιτίας τής εμφάνισής της. Επειδή είδα μερικές φωτογραφίες της στο δίκτυο το λέω, που παραπέμπουν κάπως στην «τρέλα» της Ισλανδής – σε κάποιες μάλιστα της ψιλομοιάζει κιόλας. Αν και περισσότερο η Akyol μοιάζει στη Monika… αλλά τέλος πάντων, αυτά δεν έχουν καθόλου σημασία. Σημασία έχει πως η Akyol είναι μια… Selda της εποχής μας. Αυτή είναι η σωστή αναλογία. Μια τραγουδοποιός, που επιχειρεί σ’ αυτό το κλασικό πεδίο πια του anadolu rock – να συνδυάσει δηλαδή ρυθμούς και μελωδίες της Ανατολίας (την αισθητική τους εννοώ, γιατί τα τραγούδια που λέει η Akyol δεν είναι παραδοσιακά) με το rock (διάφορα παρακλάδια του rock, από το οργανικό surf, το twang δηλαδή, μέχρι τις ψυχεδελικές προεκτάσεις του), το funk, το electro και το pop, εξερευνώντας… μυστικά περάσματα και προτείνοντας κάτι καινούριο.

Και στο “İstikrarlı Hayal Hakikattir”, που είναι το τρίτο άλμπουμ της (είχαν προηγηθεί το “Develerle Yaşıyorum” το 2014 και το “Hologram İmparatorluğu” το 2016) και που θα κυκλοφορήσει τον Οκτώβριο, η Gaye Su Akyolεπιμένει με δύναμη και πάθος βαθαίνοντας εκείνο που ξεκίνησε... κι εκεί επάνω κατορθώνει να κάνει την έκπληξη με μερικά έξοχα τραγούδια (“Meftunum sana”, “Bir yaralı kuştum”, “Halimiz itten beter”). Αλλά δεν είναι τα… κάποια καλά τραγούδια, εδώ, που πλαισιώνουν όλα τα υπόλοιπα. Το άλμπουμ είναι εξαιρετικό, με το ένα κομμάτι να είναι καλύτερο από το άλλο, απλώς κάποια tracksείναι ακόμη πιο... καταπληκτικά.

Μεγάλο ταλέντο το κορίτσι. Αξίζει πολλές ευκαιρίες!

CHILLY GONZALES: Solo Piano III [Gentle Threat, 2018]

Το πιο πρόσφατο άλμπουμ τού καναδού πιανίστα, που… ζει και εργάζεται στην Κολωνία, Chilly Gonzalesέχει τίτλο “Solo Piano III” κι έρχεται ως συνέχεια του “Solo Piano II”, που είχε κυκλοφορήσει το 2012 και του… σκέτο “Solo Piano” από το 2004. Ο Καναδός είναι γνωστός και καταξιωμένος μουσικός, έχοντας πολύ καλή πρόσβαση σ’ ένα ακροατήριο που ενδιαφέρεται και για τη σύγχρονη (ορχηστρική) μουσική – εκείνη τέλος πάντων που εμπεριέχει μπαρόκ, κλασικές, ρομαντικές έως και new age αναφορές. Φυσικά, ο Gonzales δεν γράφει μόνο piano music, γράφει «τα πάντα» (ακόμη και hip-hop), αν και φρονώ πως ως πιανίστας αφήνει το πιο ισχυρό στίγμα του, παρά ως κάτι άλλο.

Στο “Solo Piano III” ο Gonzales ανατέμνει βασικά τον Μπαχ. Και άλλους βεβαίως του μπαρόκ και της κλασικής era – αλλά ο Μπαχ δεν παύει να είναι μια καθοριστική επιρροή. Το άκουσμα είναι απλό και όμορφο (κάπως σαν τα… κάλαντα), αφού ο Gonzalesδεν είναι τυχαίος μουσικός, και μάλιστα, χωρίς να είναι βαθυστόχαστο (το άκουσμα), διαθέτει μιαν ονειρική και ταξιδιάρικη αύρα. Προφανώς, επειδή οι αναφορές του Καναδού δεν είναι λίγες και κυρίως δεν είναι περιχαρακωμένες από στυλιστικές αγκυλώσεις.

Εξάλλου, εξηγεί όλα τα ντεσού της υπόθεσης και ο ίδιος στο έσχατο bonus track (της promotional copy) “The secrets of solo piano III”, για να μας βγάλει, μάλλον, από τη δύσκολη θέση…

STELLA CHIWESHE: Kasahwa: Early Singles [Glitterbeat, 2018]

Η 72χρονη Stella Chiweshe(γεννημένη στην παλαιά Ροδεσία και νυν Ζιμπάμπουε) είναι ένας ζωντανός θρύλος για την παραδοσιακή μουσική της χώρα της. Τούτο ο υπόλοιπος κόσμος θα το αντιληφθεί περί μέσα της δεκαετίας του ’80, όταν η Chiweshe θ’ αρχίσει να περιοδεύει σε Ευρώπη και Αμερική, δίνοντας εγγραφές της για δυτικά labels. Θα εμφανισθεί φυσικά (και) σε διάφορα WOMADs, παίζοντας πάντα την mbira της (αυτό το παράξενο… φορητό thumb-πιάνο) και τραγουδώντας για κοινωνικά και άλλα θέματα. Δεν ήταν, όμως, πάντα, εύκολα τα πράγματα για την Chiweshe, ιδίως στη δεκαετία του ’70 (επί… Ροδεσίας ακόμη), όταν έπρεπε, ως μαύρη γυναίκα, που δεν ασχολείτο μάλιστα με κάποιο είδος δυτικής μουσικής, αλλά με τοπική παραδοσιακή, να διατρανώσει το ρόλο της, με τις ηχογραφήσεις της να τυπώνονται με δυσκολία στις 45 στροφές, μένοντας στην αφάνεια λόγω μηδαμινής προώθησης από την εταιρεία της (TEAL). Μια σειρά από τέτοια σπανιότατα δισκάκια που «κόπηκαν» ανάμεσα στα χρόνια 1974-1983 (λέμε για οκτώ tracksσυνολικώς) μαζεύονται τώρα από την Glitterbeat, προκειμένου να κυκλοφορήσουν τον Σεπτέμβρη σε digital, CD και βινύλιο.

Το άκουσμα έχει φυσικά το χρώμα της εποχής (να μην ξεχνάμε πως μιλάμε για εγγραφές από μια αφρικανική χώρα με πολύ συγκεκριμένες υποδομές, πόσω μάλλον όταν θα έπρεπε να ηχογραφηθούν όργανα όπως η mbira) και την αξία του ντοκουμέντου.

These Sonic Journals comprise the complete source material for the compilation Allman Brothers Band, Fillmore East February 1970, which included performances from February 11, 13, & 14, 1970. These recordings were not previously released in their entirety because they contain significant flaws, primarily due to reel changes in the middle of songs. It was Bear’s wish that they be released in whole because they are sonically pure and include important, previously unreleased material of the band with Duane in his prime, and so with the blessing of the Allman Brothers Band, they are available here for the first time. On each night, you can find something special and rare even if only in a fragment or a solo. Highlights include the three earliest known live versions of Elizabeth Reed.

Digitally remastered edition. Sonically restored and mastered recordings of The Allman Brothers Band’s performances at the Fillmore East on February 11, 13 & 14, 1970, captured by legendary Grateful Dead soundman, Owsley Stanley, AKA Bear, who is known for the purity of his Sonic Journal recordings. This is essential listening for Allman Brothers Band fans, showcasing an early incarnation of the band with Duane Allman in full form and featuring the earliest known live concert recording of “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, ” which had just been penned by Dickey Betts shortly before these shows. The tapes were recorded just one year before the band’s landmark At Fillmore East album from the same venue. Long out-of-print, this set was freshly restored and mastered from original tapes in Owsley Stanley’s archives, and includes all new album art and liner notes, including a series of rare band photos from the Fillmore East in February 1970, original cover artwork (Electric Mushroom), and new notes from The Allman Brothers Band and the Owsley Stanley Foundation.
