Inspired by Merle Haggard’s “Workin Man Blues”, I wrote a song about being a workin woman. As a registered nurse by day and musician by night, being a workin woman sums up the past few years of my life pretty accurately. Without realizing it, I had written a handful of songs that were all stories about work.

Being a young woman in today’s America holds many opportunities that weren’t there for women 30 plus years ago. I believe I can get anywhere I want by putting in the time and work. it is upon each individual to make our world a better place and there is no one holding you back except you. I hope “Workin Woman” inspires women (and men!) to dream of what they want and work their butts off to get it. Life is too short to do anything less.

The 12 track album was recorded over a three week span in the woods of Aitkin, Minnesota on Tame Fish Lake. All of the acoustic guitar, vocals, drums, and saxophone parts were recorded by me. Electric guitar, bass, piano, harmonica, and mandolin were recorded by Martin Farrell Jr. Four tracks feature the dobro man from outer space Chad Graves, including the song “Here In Kansas” that turns from a country ballad to a bluegrass breakdown to a New Orleans style ending. Pedal steel player Mike Poholsky is also featured on four tracks including “Dreamin”, a simple, three chord song I have brought to many open jams around town. The album was produced by Martin and me out of our self designed recording rig that we call “Tame Fish Studios”.

I’ve dedicated this album to the lady who taught me to be a workin woman, my mom.

 Le retour de Dona après un break ( certainement familiale ). Elle est parolée par Lama/Lemesle, chante comme si nous étions dans les années 30; reprend catastrophiquement sans âme sa plus belle composition.Bref, tente un truc qui restera anecdotique mais dont on se souviendra grâce aux passages chez les Carpentier comme "l'antistar"dont le 45 restera aux oubliettes chez Deram. L'album sera réedité par la suite chez Pathé Marconi.

La Mambanegra es una orquesta de once miembros de Santiago de Cali que desarrolla un sonido que ellos mismos llaman "colombian break salsa" y que está inspirado en las orquestas de salsa que triunfaron en el Nueva York de los años 70 del siglo XX, al que incorporan influencias del r&b, el hip hop y el reggae.
Inspirada en la historia de un héroe anónimo y mítico del Barrio Obrero, quien tuvo una serie de aventuras fantásticas en Cali, La Habana y Nueva York, esta orquesta trae un nuevo concepto de la salsa y la música latina para el Mundo: "Dice la leyenda que alguna vez existió un personaje llamado Tomas Rentería -hijo de la nigeriana Belarmina Rentería- que se embarcó como polizón en un buque que zarpo del puerto de Buenaventura hacia New York. Rentería fue capturado en el barco y, sin misericordia, arrojado a las aguas cálidas de Cuba. Dice, además la leyenda, que Rentería tenía tan buena suerte que un babalao lo salvó de ahogarse y lo cuidó por un buen tiempo, lo bautizo además con el nombre de El Callegüeso. En la Habana conoció al legendario conguero Chano Pozo, el cual le regaló una flauta proveniente de África a la que le decían La Mambanegra. De nuevo como polizón, el recién bautizado Callegüeso logró completar su viaje hasta New York y en los años 40 del siglo pasado fundo su orquesta Mambanegra".

Como esta historia suena El Callegüeso y su Malamaña, la opera prima de La Mambanegra. Creada y dirigida por el compositor, arreglista, saxofonista y vocalista colombiano Jacobo Vélez, La Mambanegra propone un discurso musical con elementos urbanos como el hip hop, el funk y la música antillana. Jacobo -quien a su vez fundó La Mojarra Eléctrica- logra crear todo un universo visual y sonoro a partir de historias urbanas que entrelazan el Barrio Obrero de Cali con el malecón de La Habana. Acontecimientos surrealistas, vivencias de esquina, y la picardía propia de un músico con horizontes infinitos, logran que esta grabación (realizada en su mayoría en Cali por Bombo Records) difícilmente pueda ser etiquetada, como precisamente pretende el experimentado saxofonista.
Además de los once músicos base de La Mambanegra, otros/as artistas invitados/as hicieron parte de la grabación: la holandesa Maite Hontelé se destaca en el solo de trompeta de "Puro Potenkem". Eddy Martínez, pianista colombiano, participa en la bella melodía "Cantare Para Vos", una pieza inspirada en la nueva trova cubana. "La Compostura" destaca al trombonista Edgardo Manuel; el trompetista cubano Yasek Manzano despliega su virtuosismo en "El Blues de Yemaya", mientras que Andrés "Chinito" Escobar ejecuta la batería en "Me Parece Perfecto", una explosiva descarga en homenaje al timbalero Wilson Viveros.

… και μεγάλοι μουσικοί, αν αναφερόμαστε στο νορβηγό κοντραμπασίστα Arild Andersen, τον ιταλό ντράμερ, που ζει όμως χρόνια στη Νορβηγία, Paolo Vinaccia και τον σκωτσέζο σαξοφωνίστα (τενόρο) Tommy Smith. Οι τρεις τους λοιπόν, που δεν βρίσκονται δισκογραφικά για πρώτη φορά (άκου το “Live at Belleville” του 2008 και το “Mira” του 2014) πιάνονται εδώ σ’ ένα live κάπου στην Αυστρία (29 Σεπτεμβρίου, 2016), το οποίο τώρα μετατρέπεται σε CD (και σε τι CD!), υπό τον τίτλο “In-House Science” [ECM / AN Music, 2018].

Να πούμε λοιπόν από την αρχή πως το “In-House Science” είναι ένα άλμπουμ εκπληκτικής jazz, απ’ όποια πλευρά και να το δεις. Κι ας είναι live… Γιατί τα live της ECM δεν διαφέρουν από τις στουντιακές καταγραφές της. Είναι προφανές θέλω να πω πως ο Manfred Eicher, από τα δεκάδες «ζωντανά» (και του συγκεκριμένου τρίο και του κάθε σχήματος), που μπορεί να φθάνουν στα χέρια του για… μελλοντικές κυκλοφορίες, θα επιλέξει για να δισκογραφήσει μόνον εκείνα που είναι «τέλεια» από κάθε άποψη. Κάτι που, εν πάση περιπτώσει, συμβαίνει και με το παρόν, που εντυπωσιάζει σφόδρα από το πρώτο κιόλας track, με τον παλμό, την έμπνευση και τη δύναμή του. Σπουδαίες συνθέσεις (όλες του Andersen), η μία καλύτερη από την άλλη, με υψηλότατης κλάσης παιξίματα (το τι κάνει π.χ. ο Νορβηγός στο “Science” δεν περιγράφεται), με τελείως απογειωτικές σκηνές μελωδιών (“Venice”), με αναπάντεχες εισαγωγές και θεϊκές αναπτύξεις θεμάτων (“North of the north wind”), με σπάνιας ταύτισης αυτοσχεδιαστικά μέρη, με παιξίματα από τους Vinaccia και Smith, που είναι σκέτο «ταξίδι», κοσμικό ή άλλο. Γράφω με ενθουσιασμό, πρώτα-πρώτα, για το “North of the north wind”, που είναι ένας… θρίαμβος ομορφιάς, τεχνικής και Τέχνης, όπως και για τα δύο τελευταία tracks (το “Blussy” και το “In-house”), που αποδείχνουν το προφανές από… αιώνες. Πως οι μεγάλοι μουσικοί είναι μεγάλοι, βασικά, γιατί έχουν μελετήσει την ιστορία, παίζοντάς την στα δάκτυλά τους.

Τούτο πράττουν εδώ οι Andersen, Vinaccia και Smithκαι γι’ αυτό αποθεώνονται!

“Am I Me Yet?” her third full-length studio album. The collection of 15 songs features Ava on guitar and vocals, Andy Mullen on classical guitar, and Anna Tivel on violin. The music was recorded at The Hallowed Halls in Portland, Oregon, and was engineered by Hawkins Wright who also co-produced the album with Ava. It is her second album in two years with the same collaborators and builds on her strength in musicianship and performance.

Hij verdient wat extra aandacht, vandaar deze re-post.
Backing door de Roots Radics met Flabba Holt, Style,
Bingy Bunny, Dwight Pickney, Steele en Sky Juice. Sinds de aanschaf
in 1982 reeds een van m’n favoriete reggae platen. Die dikke ‘Hit Bound’
klanken zijn onovertroffen. Gemixed door Scientist en dat is te horen,
dub met vokalen. Opgenomen in Channel One Studio’s, geproduceerd
door Niney Holmes en Joseph Hoo Kim, wat een kraker..

It deserves some extra attention hence this here re-post.
Backing by the Roots Radics with Flabba Holt, Style, Bingy Bunny, Dwight
Pickney, Steel and Sky Juice. Ever since I bought it in 1982 this is one of my
Favourite reggae albums. The fatback ‘Hit Bound’ sound is unsurpassed.
Mixed by Scientist and that shows, pure dub with vocals. Recorded at
Channel One Studio’s, produced by Niney Holmes and
Joseph Hoo Kim, what a killer..

Every now and then I stumble upon an album of which I’m sure
I have posted it in the past but somehow has disappeared from
the Global Groove. Heritage from the time before we had our
own server. Blogspot just threw away certain posts without
warning those days. Anyway, here it is again cuz it’s a hell of
a record and one of my favourite Yellowman albums. 10 inch,
from 1984, you don’t know it..? better listen quickly then..

Eens in de zoveel tijd kom ik er weer zo eentje tegen, een plaat
waarvan ik zeker weet dat ik hem in het verleden al eens heb gepost.
Erfenis van de periode voordat we onze eigen server hadden. Blogspot
donderde zo’n post gewoon weg zonder enige vorm van waarschuwing.
Scahandalig natuurlijk, hoe dan ook, hier is ie weer want het blijft een dijk
van een plaat en een van mijn lievelings Yellowman albums. Op 10 inch
en uit 1984. ken je hem niet ..? Heel snel luisteren dan..
