"Forever" is FarmStrong’s second CD release, and features four of the band’s original songs, along with a very diverse set of covers, from The Band, The Cars, and great songwriters in the country music tradition, such as Rodney Crowell and Kate Wolf. Country, folk, bluegrass and blues are all threads in this musical fabric, but it is the harmony singing that is at the heart of it.
Jim Faddis (vocals & rhythm guitar) is the main voice and songwriter of the band, and provides three fantastic songs to the project, including the title track "Forever". Cort Armstrong (vocals & lead guitar) provides the high harmony to Faddis’ lead, and the low harmony to Rick Meade’s lead voice, as well as singing lead on three tracks on this project. Rick Meade (vocals & dobro) provides the low harmony voice and sings lead on "Wait a Minute". John Pyles (upright bass) was an integral part of arranging the songs of this project.

It’s taken Sara Melson five years to follow up her fine 2008 Nettwerk debut Dirty Mind but the upcoming April 30 album A Million White Stars is clearly well worth the wait. Intact are the sprightly folk/pop tracks and vocals shaded with tender vulnerability that have made Melson a popular source of songs for TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy. But what sets Melson’s own particular songcraft apart from the thousands of female singer/songwriters is the palpable strength and honesty that flows through her music. In a cookie-cutter world littered with songs more interested in "marketing" than music, she’s simply not afraid to wear her own real emotions prominently on her sleeve. While many of A Million White Star’s songs are permeated with thoughtful reflection, lead single "What Are You Waiting For" (listen after the jump) is simply a two-and-a-half minute anthem celebrating the urgency of the moment: a breezy, uptempo and completely infectious song propelled by a tender-hooked chorus and hand-clapped rhythms. We’re also taken with "Lay You Down", a churning folk/rocker that shimmers in it’s own hazy retro-psychedelic haze. Listen for "I love the way you hit the bass"…

he past 12 months have been so sad and seismic that it feels as if there’s no more room in the world for additional musical melancholy. Brisbane alt-rock group the Trouble With Templeton are named after an episode of The Twilight Zone, which signals their songs’ late-night, spectral qualities, and bring the sentiment and soundscapes of the moody, spacious guitar bands who still lurk on festival bills but hardly capture the zeitgeist: the Antlers, Sigur Rós, Patrick Watson, etc. Influenced by early Radiohead and the sulky post-rock that used to be celebrated on Pitchfork, frontman Thomas Calder is dedicated to his doom; sometimes sulky (“Don’t make me explain again”), other times slacker. The slow-motion misery of I Want Love is a little too drenched in its own fragile despair, but the lazy, wilted quality of Bad Mistake is better; a tired, grunge-lite lollop, more Stephen Malkmus than all-out macabre.

Held in very high regard in Brazilian music circles, Gal Costa has been impressively consistent over the years. And the charismatic singer was in excellent form when she greeted the 1990s with Plural. Though Costa isn’t a jazz singer per se, she uses jazz influence to her advantage on caressing versions of the standards "I Didn’t Know What Time It Was" and "Begin the Beguine" (which was a major hit for Artie Shaw during the swing era). Costa sings mostly in Portuguese, but switches to English for those standards. While they favor the type of relaxed introspection one expects from bossa nova, Costa is much more exuberant and upbeat on the reggae-influenced "Cabelo," the Caribbean-minded "Zanzando," and the percussive "Salvador Nao Inerte" (a fine example of the Bahian school of Brazilian pop). Plural demonstrates that the dedicated following she commands is well deserved. ~Alex Henderson
