Blue October has been around since 1995, though for most people it was their song “Hate Me” in 2006 that made them fans. This is a song that stands through the tests of time and gives you goosebumps.

While a quick skim through the current bio only had one point that stood out, which was something about today’s Blue October being unrecognizable. While there have been many changes in the band’s lineup, their music still has a creative edge that borders on gothic darkness and synth pop, with something that fits into today’s pop and rock stylings.

On August 17 the new album will be available, and it’s an amazing thing. I Hope You’re Happy opens with “Daylight” – a song that is edgy and full of energy. It will make you instantly fall in love with the band, for the first time or all over again.

Enriched with the delightful sound of the violin, “I Want To Come Back Home,” begins with the sounds of a symphony first-chair and then leads into a pop-y song that has a kicking beat for a song with sad lyrics. The beat is hard to ignore on this one.

Blue October’s newer music is a little different than their stuff from the early 2000s, but you can still hear and feel a little of that edge within the more pop sounding tunes. There’s still something deeper here, even in the love songs (or the broken-hearted songs).

The songs are lyrically magnificent – they tell stories, they empower, they talk about real life. Expect to be inspired when you listen to this 5-star album!

The long-running psych-pop crew have teamed with Miami videographers Coral Morphologic for an album and film called Tangerine Reef – a weird, hypnotic, sensual, occasionally Cronenberg-ian look under the waves that gets up close and personal with spawning sealife. A strong departure from the giddy hooks of 2016’s Painting With, the new project submerges Animal Collective in patient, murky, reverbed, modular-synth-heavy soundworlds, complimenting the footage of glowing, undulating creatures.

Some time ago i had a life changing experience. I always lived in he conviction that when i bought a dead fish like filleted plaice, that unlucky creature had been catched somewhere at sea and now was on his way to my kitchen to be fried and devoured.

Until i visited a local fish factory here in Lemmer. There i saw a hughe machine that guts and debones the half frozen flatfishes and cut them in half: upper sides go to the left side and all bottom sides to the right. Then each pile is carried off to the packing division.

That means that the fish i buy in the supermarket is in reality not the corpse of one fish but two halfs! The top can be from an elderly motherfish, while the abdomen cut out of uncle fish completes the product. Or a combination of daddy fish with the neighbour's daughter fish. Or half the cadaver of a murder fish together combined with half of his victim... Two different lives and deaths entangled in a cruel fate.

So now i know for sure: nothing is what it seems.

Onlangs had ik een levensveranderende ervaring. Ik leefde altijd in de overtuiging dat als ik een dooie vis kocht zoals een gefileerd scholletje, dat het arme beest dan ergens uit de Noordzee was opgevist en dan nu op weg was naar mijn keuken om daar gebakken en verorberd te worden.

Totdat ik een visverwerkende fabriek bezocht te Lemmer. Daar stond een hele grote machine die scholletjes ontdeed van darmen en graat en vervolgens doormidden sneed. Bovenkantjes (grijs met rooie stippen) naar links en de onderkantjes naar rechts. Vervolgens verdwijnen beide stapels naar de verpakkingsafdeling.

Dat betekent dat de vis die ik koop in de supermarkt niet het lijk is van een vis, maar 2 halve. De bovenkant kan van 'n moedervis zijn terwijl oom vis zijn onderlichaam beschikbaar stelde. Of een kombinatie van pappa-vis z'n onderkant met het topje van de dochter van de buurman-vis. Twee verschillende levens en sterfgevallen vervlochten in een wreed noodlot.

Dus nu weet ik het zeker: niets is wat het lijkt.
