Musical collaborations can be a dicey proposition. The blending of two styles and sounds can lead to the cancellation of the aspects of each that make them interesting and unique in the first place, which in turn leads to an inferior record. Iron & Wine and Calexico decided to tempt fate and hook up in 2004 and In the Reins is the result. The record manages to blend the best aspects of the two groups and comes off a winner in all respects. You get Iron & Wine’s melodicism, emotional depth, and literary grace backed by Calexico’s desert-bleached C&W orchestral splendor. The record is probably pitched more in the I&W camp as Iron & Wine’s Sam Beam wrote all the songs and sings his moody miniature portraits of desperation in a breathy, shivers-down-your-spine croon. Calexico color in his compositions with pedal steels, vibraphone, and meandering trumpets, and lead them out of the insular Florida swamp and into the wide-screen West. None of Beam’s songs feel like between-album throwaways and in fact a few rate among his best (the aching and staggeringly beautiful “Dead Man’s Will,” “He Lays in the Reins.”). They almost all sound wonderful; the wider range of musical colors opens up his songs and brings in some moods and sounds you might not expect on an Iron & Wine record. Case in point is “A History of Lovers,” which comes equipped with a boogie beat, a glittering Vegas horn section, and actually rocks out very convincingly. Calexico really pulls a rabbit out of the hat there as Beam is about the last person in the music biz you would expect to rock out convincingly. The only place where the pairing falters is on the slick and facile “Red Dust,” which starts off as an intimate blues ballad with just Beam and guitars, then shifts to a barroom bluesy stomp featuring some very clichéd harp soloing. Luckily, it is a brief misstep that doesn’t wreck an otherwise excellent record. Fans of both bands will want to get In the Reins because it rates favorably with their best work and on a couple of songs (“A History of Lovers,” “Dead Man’s Will”) the sum of their collaboration creates music greater than their parts. A rare and wonderful occurrence that; don’t let it slip past you.

Bridget St John (born Bridget Hobbs, 4 October 1946, South London) is a British singer and songwriter, best known for the three albums she recorded between 1969 and 1972 for John Peel’s Dandelion label. Peel produced her debut album Ask Me No Questions. She also recorded a large number of BBC Radio and Peel sessions and toured regularly on the UK college and festival circuit. Her popularity peaked in 1974 when she was voted fifth most popular female singer in that year’s Melody Maker readers poll.
An accomplished guitar player, she credits John Martyn as her guitar mentor.
The second album Songs for the Gentle Man, was produced by Ron Geesin. St. John then recorded another album, Jumble Queen, for Chrysalis Records in 1974. She emigrated to Greenwich Village in 1976 and virtually disappeared from the public eye for over 20 years. She appeared at a Nick Drake tribute concert in New York in 1999, performing “Northern Sky” and “One of These Things First”. She toured Japan in 2006 with the minimalist French musician Colleen.
Aside from work under her own name, Bridget St John has also recorded with Mike Oldfield (on Amarok), Kevin Ayers and Robin Frederick. In 2007 she reunited with Kevin Ayers to record on his album The Unfairground in New York. They duetted on the song “Baby Come Home”.
She was described by John Peel as “the best lady singer-songwriter in the country”.

Στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του ’60 οι μουσικές των Beatles, των Rolling Stones και των υπόλοιπων βρετανικών γκρουπ έδωσαν το έναυσμα σε χιλιάδες νέους, σε όλο τον κόσμο και φυσικά στους Ευρωπαίους, να συμμετάσχουν, ο καθένας με τον τρόπο του, στην παγκόσμια μουσική «επανάσταση». Μάλιστα, πολλά από ’κείνα τα παιδιά με τα εφήμερα συγκροτήματά τους ταξίδευαν συχνά μακριά από τις πατρίδες τους, αναζητώντας καλύτερη τύχη στις χώρες του ευρωπαϊκού νότου (κυρίως). Για παράδειγμα ο Eric Clapton έπαιξε στην Ελλάδα με τους Juniors, οι Βρετανοί Rokes έκαναν καριέρα στην Ιταλία, ενώ οι Γερμανοί Ones απέκτησαν ιδιαίτερη φήμη στην Ισπανία.

Οι Ones αποτελούσαν βασική ατραξιόν του ισπανικού pop wave και οι συναυλίες τους στη Βαρκελώνη και το Κάδιξ είχαν ξεχωριστή επιτυχία. Όταν μάλιστα έφθασε η ώρα να παίξουν στη βίλα του Salvador Dali, σ’ ένα καλά προετοιμασμένο art-show τα πάντα άλλαξαν γι’ αυτούς. Ο Edgar Froese, μέλος τότε των Ones, θυμάται (από το βιβλίο του Julian Cope Krautrocksamplerτου 1996):

«Ήταν η μεγαλύτερη ευκαιρία που μου δόθηκε ποτέ στη μουσική. Βλέποντας τον τρόπο που ο Salvador Dali σκεφτόταν και μιλούσε κατάλαβα πλέον πως τα πάντα ήταν δυνατά. Ό,τι έκανε αυτός με τη ζωγραφική θα μπορούσε να γίνει και με τη μουσική».

Η καριέρα των Ones στην Ισπανία μπορεί να έληξε άδοξα (ηχογράφησαν πάντως ένα 45άρι με τα… χίπικα τραγούδια “Lady Greengrass / Love of mine” στην Star-Club το 1967), όταν όμως ο Froese και οι υπόλοιποι επέστρεψαν στο Βερολίνο προς το τέλος του ’67, η τοπική νεανική μουσική κουλτούρα είχε ήδη ανακαλύψει τους πιο… underground ήρωές της, τον Frank Zappa και τους Mothers of Invention, τους Grateful Dead, τους Velvet Underground, αλλάζοντας άρδην το σκηνικό.

Το Γενάρη του 1968 το νέο γκρουπ τού Edgar Froese ήταν πλέον γεγονός.

Οι Tangerine Dream πρωτοεμφανίζονται μπροστά σε κόσμο στο Πολυτεχνείο του Βερολίνου, κι εκείνη την εποχή στο σχήμα συμμετείχαν, εκτός από τον Froese που έπαιζε κιθάρα, οι Lanse Hapshash ντραμς, Kurt Kerkenberg μπάσο και Volker Hombach φλάουτο, βιολί. Αυτή η σύνθεση δεν είχε μεγάλη διάρκεια ζωής, κι έπειτα από αρκετές ανακατατάξεις το σχήμα δείχνει να σταθεροποιείται προς ένα τρίο. Ο Klaus Schulze ντραμς από τους βραχύβιους Psy-Free και ο Conrad Schnitzler σύνθια, ένας νεοφερμένος και με ιδιαίτερο ταλέντο στην ηχητική διευθέτηση των ηλεκτρονικών, θα συμπλήρωναν τη νέα line-up.

Το πρώτο άλμπουμ των Tangerine Dream με τίτλο “Electronic Meditation” [Ohr] ηχογραφείται τον Οκτώβριο του 1969 και κυκλοφορεί τον Ιούνιο του ’70. Πρόκειται για ένα έξοχο άλμπουμ –ένα από τα δύο-τρία ωραιότερα που έκαναν ποτέ– εκεί όπου τα Floyd-ικά space-rock στοιχεία, η θυελλώδης κιθαριστική κληρονομιά του Jimi Hendrix μαζί με μια γενικότερη αυτοσχεδιαστική διάθεση συνυπάρχουν σ’ έναν προχωρημένο συνδυασμό ακόμη και με τα σημερινά δεδομένα.

Ξεπερνάω κάθε επόμενη (σπουδαία) δουλειά τους (“Alpha Centauri”, “Zeit”, “Atem”, “Phaedra”…) τουλάχιστον μέχρι το σπάνιας ωραιότητας “Encore” [Virgin], που ηχογραφήθηκε κατά τη βορειοαμερικανική περιοδεία τους τον Μάρτιο και τον Απρίλιο του 1977. Τα τέσσερα tracks εκείνου του διπλού LP (“Cherokee Lane”, “Monolight”, “Coldwater Canyon”, “Desert Dream”) οφείλουν να τ’ ακούσουν και να τα κάνουν φυλαχτό όσοι νεότεροι ομνύουν στα αναλογικά σύνθια.

Ανοίγω εδώ μια παρένθεση. Υπάρχουν μερικά όργανα, όπως για παράδειγμα οι κέλτικες harp-guitars, τα οποία, ακόμη και κατά τη διάρκεια ενός κονσέρτου, ξεκουρδίζονται πανεύκολα. Μάλιστα, πολλοί χειριστές αυτών των παράξενων οργάνων λένε, κάπως σαν ανέκδοτο, πως… το μισό χρόνο της συναυλίας δεν κάνουν τίποτ’ άλλο από το να κουρδίζουν, ενώ τον υπόλοιπο μισό παίζουν ξεκούρδιστοι!

Την ίδια δυσκολία αντιμετώπιζαν και όσοι ασχολούνταν με τα αναλογικά synthesizers στα seventies, μιας και κατά τη διάρκεια ενός κοντσέρτου τέτοιας ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής, πολλές ή κάποιες γεννήτριες ήχου μπορεί να βρίσκονταν από τη μια στιγμή στην άλλη… out of tune.

Έτσι εξηγείται, από μια μεριά, γιατί ο Βαγγέλης Παπαθανασίου φερ’ ειπείν έδινε σπανίως live, έτσι εξηγείται γιατί το “Live at The Philharmonics 1976” των Tangerine Dream, που έλαβε χώρα στο Δυτικό Βερολίνο την 27/6/1976, έχει τη μισή διάρκεια στον δίσκο (λέμε για το CD “Soundmill Navigator”, που βγήκε για πρώτη φορά το 2000 στη δική τους TDI Music) απ’ όσο είχε στη συναυλία. Εάν ήσουν τελειομανής, τότε τα αναλογικά ηλεκτρονικά, συχνά, υπέσκαπταν «από τη μάνα τους» την προσπάθειά σου.

Οι Tangerine Dream, με λίγα λόγια, ήταν από τα ελάχιστα ηλεκτρονικά γκρουπ της δεκαετίας του ’70, που τολμούσαν να παίξουν live, κουρδίζοντας λίγο πριν το σώου τους, συγχρονίζοντας τους sequencers και τακτοποιώντας τα… χιλιόμετρα καλωδιώσεων, που ήταν απαραίτητα για να λειτουργήσει η εγκατάσταση. Και τούτο το επιχείρησαν τόσο με την «κλασική» σύνθεσή τους (Εdgar Froese, Chris Franke, Peter Baumann), όσο και με την επόμενή τους, εκείνη με την οποία εμφανίστηκαν την 30/8/1983 στον Λυκαβηττό (Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, Johannes Schmoelling) σε μια συναυλία, που θα μείνει για πάντα στη μνήμη όσων είχαν τη θεία τύχη να την παρακολουθήσουν. (Την είχε μεταδώσει και η ΕΡΤ). Έχω, δε, την από χρόνια ισχυρή πεποίθηση πως εκείνο το live των Tangerine Dream στο Λυκαβηττό είναι μάλλον το πιο ψυχεδελικό «ζωντανό» που οργανώθηκε ποτέ στην Ελλάδα – και όσοι διαφωνούν καλοδεχούμενοι (αρκεί να βρίσκονταν, τότε, στο λόφο).

Και για να κλείσω την παρούσα μικρή αναφορά, σ’ αυτό το πολύ μεγάλο γκρουπ, να πω και τούτο. Οι Tangerine Dream είναι ένα από τα ελάχιστα συγκροτήματα των sixties που εξακολουθούν όχι απλώς να βρίσκονται εν ζωή και να ηχογραφούν (έστω και χωρίς κανένα πια original μέλος τους, μετά και το θάνατο του Edgar Froeseπριν τρία χρόνια), αλλά και να απολαμβάνουν μιας τεράστιας και παγκόσμιας ανταπόκρισης. Μαζί, δε, με τους Hawkwind και τους Grateful Dead (που ξαναφτιάχτηκαν το 2015, αλλά δεν συνέχισαν) αποτελούν μία «ιερή» τριάδα με εκατομμύρια πιστούς σε όλο τον κόσμο. Απίστευτα fan clubs, αμέτρητες δισκογραφίες, ατέλειωτες εκδηλώσεις θαυμασμού και λατρείας…

Για τους Γερμανούς… και λίγα είναι, αφού πάνω στους δικούς τους ήχους πάτησε σχεδόν όλη η ηλεκτρονική σκηνή από τα eighties και μετά…
