" The voice projection of the lyrics is good and full, and leads to a wordless yodel sounding not unlike an American Indian call – the moaning of spirits known and unknown " – this from the liner notes describing Leon Thomas’ singing on the album "Karma " by Pharoah Sanders.
Leon Thomas along with James Spaulding, who is the principle soloist on many of the first nine tracks on this release, is one of the sadly forgotten and neglected musicians in Jazz. Thomas was a ground breaking vocalist as the music featured here will clearly reveal. He worked with such as Sanders, Booker Ervin, Randy Weston and Roland Kirk before he had records released under his own name and went on to record with Oliver Nelson and Johnny Hodges around the time of this disc ( 1969 ). His style of singing was highly unusual, blending Jazz, Blues and a form of yodelling ( heard in African music and in the vocalising of Eddie Harris ) which he blended to great effect to produce a sound peculiar to him.
Perhaps the most well known of his compositions is "The Creator Has A Master Plan " which was a collaboration with Pharoah Sanders . It is a mesmeric late 60’s piece typical of its time and on this version has some highly effective flute playing from Spaulding. "One " is another Thomas composition -this time at a very bright swinging tempo with a scorching alto saxophone solo from Spaulding." Echoes" is a slow Jazz Waltz, heavy on the yodel style singing and with flute from Spaulding and African flute from Thomas . "Damn Nam " and "Malcolm’s Gone " are very much reflections of their era, but they have stood the test of time. The Horace Silver tune "Song For My Father " is given a rhythmic and sensitive rendition and " Tunisia " is yet another worthy version of this classic.
Pharoah Sanders plays on three of the tracks but the real standout performer is James Spaulding. I heard Spaulding with the David Murray Octet and he was obviously held in some awe by the other musicians – he is one of Jazz’s many well kept secrets both on alto and flute.
The last nine tracks are from a much earlier unreleased RCA big band session under Thomas’ name and, quite honestly , this issue does not gain anything with their inclusion . Thomas had not achieved his mature style at this point in time and they are just journeyman versions of the standard repertoire. However, this disc is well worth a listen for the tracks that comprised the original " Spirits Known And Unknown " album. Review by Dick Stafford

2012 saw the release of Libido Funk Circus’ first all-original album, Roustabouts & Debutantes, which was an eclectic mix of rock, funk, country and pop music written to mimic the wide array of music the band plays at their live shows. Two and a half years later the band is back with a brand new offering called Heading West.

Mandy Rowden was born into a fundamentalist Baptist household and raised in East Texas where she was homeschooled throughout her adolescence. The Rowden family was restricted to a regimen of gospel and classical music and, as any respectful child does, she adhered to her parents beliefs while taking up classical violin and piano at a mere six years old. Rowden’s parents noticed her natural abilities, and as a result of her insatiable musical wanderlust, or perhaps fearlessness, Rowden rejected her family’s notion of what is acceptable and picked up a guitar in high school. With each strum her passion for the instrument grew exponentially; her worldview changed when she unlocked the long forbidden door to rock music at twenty one.
Rowden is a student for life and plays an always-expanding list of instruments that now includes: piano, fiddle, mandolin, bass, harmonica, drums, ukulele, and banjo. She has applied her expertise and passion for music by founding Girl Guitar, a musical workshop and complete "Rock School for women" that involves teaching women of all ages to become confident performers in six-week classes. Ranging from picking up a guitar for the first time to crafting songs, learning drums, and jamming in a Metallica cover band, Girl Guitar’s offerings have surpassed Rowden’s wildest dreams for the program.

Among American audiences, Manu Dibango is best known for "Soul Makossa," a highly infectious blend of African music, soul-funk, and jazz that became a major pop hit in the early ’70s. The African artist revisited his signature tune on 1994’s Wakafrika, which boasts an all-star cast that includes Peter Gabriel as well as Haiti’s Papa Wemba and African heroes Ladysmith Black Mambazo, King Sunny Ade, and Youssou N’Dour. With such a stellar bunch of guests, Wakafrika should have been outstanding instead of simply decent. But while it isn’t the all-out masterpiece it should have been, there’s a lot that’s enjoyable on this CD, including the reggae-influenced "Em’ma," a remake of Gabriel’s "Biko," and the "Makossa"-ish jams "Wakafrika" and "Jingo." Though likable enough, Dibango’s new version of "Soul Makossa" falls short of the excellence of the original — but then, one couldn’t realistically expect him to improve on perfection. (AMG)

Reissue with the latest DSD remastering. Comes with liner notes. A great album of funky Japanese fusion – one of the few sets from the Japanese scene of the late 70s that got any sort of wider release in the US – and a treasure that we’ve loved for years! The set’s got a really great sound – soulful and funky, but sharp too – in a lineup that features a variety of keyboards from Masabumi Kikuchi, plus work by Terumasa Hino on trumpet, Steve Grossman and Dave Liebman on saxes, and James Mason on guitar! The best cuts have a funky feel that’s in the CTI/Kudu mode – perhaps mixed with a bit of Herbie Hancock keyboard jamming – and the album’s a surprisingly lost funky gem in the Columbia catalog of the early 80s, with a much harder edge than some of the other work on the label at the time!

Formed by ex-members of modern jazz ensemble Blue Rondo a la Turk, Matt Bianco evolved into one of England’s top jazz-pop bands. Their rendition of Georgie Fame’s "Yeh Yeh" received a European music award as Best Single of 1985, while their single "Wam Bam Boogie" was the number one European club track of 1988.
The group withstood numerous personnel changes; initially featuring keyboard player Danny White, bassist Kito Poncioni, and vocalists Mark Reilly and Basia, the original group disbanded shortly after releasing their debut album, Whose Side Are You On?, in 1982. Three years later, the group was resurrected with Reilly and keyboard player Mark Fisher, who had previously appeared with the band during a live television show. The group also worked with a variety of guest vocalists. Their 1988 album, Indigo, featured the hit singles "Don’t Blame It on That Girl," sung by Emilio Estefan, and "Wam Bam Boogie," sung by Ambassador. A compilation album, A/Collection, sampled earlier recordings and included a new version of "Wam Bam Boogie," featuring the vocals of Kym Mazelle.
Released in 2001, Rico, featured a blend of acid jazz and traditional Cuban rhythms. Partly recorded in the Havana studio where Wim Wenders and Ry Cooder recorded Buena Vista Social Club, the album included "Cha Cha Cuba," which reached the top of the charts in Japan.
