Davey Woodward has been a prolific songwriter with his bands The Brilliant Corners and The Experimental Pop Band. An indie pop legend to some, obscure outsider to most. He approaches his fourth decade making alternative music with the same enthusiasm and single mindedness as he did in the first.
Having recently finished recording with Karen, Davey had an idea that he wanted to record an album of songs quickly with people he had never worked with before. Davey knew the songs had to sound effortless, in many ways go back to a time when artists like Bowie would go into the studio without finished songs or someone like Dylan would work the song out while the tape was rolling. He did not want the songs to sound laboured. The Winter Orphans were born.
Julian (guitar) had not been in a studio for over a decade. Steve (drums) was playing in a million other bands but found time. Steve knew Mark who was a guitarist. Davey said well he can play bass and piano then! Davey played them the songs (the lyrics were unfinished and the chords changed many times over the five rehearsals they had prior to the recording, which took place over a long weekend in July 2017). The band said they liked the songs. They told Davey the songs sounded very personal, were they? They said it reminded them of English Folk, Courtney Barnett, The Velvets, The Band and Johnny Cash.
With those kinds of references it’s no surprise that this record takes you back to a time when albums were a collection of songs that transported you to another place. Where you would be lost in someone else’s world for half an hour. The words and music swirling around in your head for days on end. Feeling a connection with the artist. That’s a special moment that is increasingly difficult to capture in the fast foreword world we now live in. A culture where actually listening to an album of songs in one go is a rare thing. So you need to make time, sit down, relax and listen to this debut album. It won’t disappoint.
Davey Woodward and The Winter Orphans enjoyed recording this album so much that they plan to record another one. They have only played live twice but they hope to play more gigs soon.

Clay Parker & Jodi James – The Lonesomest Sound That Can Sound (2018)

Inspired by Woody Guthrie’s lyric: “it was the lonesomest sound boys, that ever heard sound, boys,” acoustic folk duo Clay Parker and Jodi James have crafted a new album The Lonesomest Sound that’s refreshingly honest, moving songwriting. Surrounded by talented musicians — Clyde Thompson on fiddle, Paul Buller on pedal steel, mandolin and electric guitars; and rhythm section Micah Blouin and Davin Hinson — they have blithely managed to create an album that’s both hushed and musically complex.

Ethan Hawke heard the duo in a coffee shop in Louisiana, and cast the duo in a musical role in is forthcoming film, a biopic about Blaze Foley — a validation of their classic sound.

“Easy Breeze” winds around on a lazy beat and paints images of a whipporwills and sorrow about the passing of time, with their voices melding in earthy, old timey harmonies, with James’ highlighted as fluid and standout. “Katie’s Blues” continues the trajectory through sweet despair. “Far Away” gives Parker a chance to lead vocally and the result remains consistently lovely. “Remember it All” might be the most powerful piece on the album, “it’s a long clear night and there ain’t no one where I’m going to… do you remember it all when you were young?” “Killin’ Floor” is twelve minutes long, an earnest but at the same time sparse, painful number: “you gave me your killin’ floor… did you ever know the lonesomest song that can sound? You gave me your killin’ floor.”

Recorded at Blue Velvet Studio (engineered by Denton Hatcher) and also recorded at The Bakery Sound Studio (engineered by Joshua St. Moblo), this album is a nice summer treat.

Released in Europe to coincide with Bruce Springsteen’s spring 1993 tour of the continent, this album is a 13-track, nearly 72-minute audio version of Springsteen’s video concert broadcast on MTV in the fall of 1992. It was part of the network’s Unplugged series, but after performing the first, previously unheard song “Red Headed Woman” alone on guitar, Springsteen shouted, “All right, let’s rock it!,” and departed from the acoustic format. (The album’s title has an “X” drawn through the “Un” of “Unplugged.”) Eight of the selections come from Springsteen’s 1992 albums Human Touch and Lucky Town, and the relatively minor tracks from the former benefit from being sequenced among the more ambitious songs from the latter and such old favorites as “Darkness on the Edge of Town” and “Thunder Road.” Though Springsteen and his new band don’t “rock it” too hard for the most part, a notable exception is a performance of the previously unrecorded “Light of Day,” a title song Springsteen wrote for a 1987 movie. Here, he gives a taste of the enthusiasm and spontaneity he can bring to his live performances. But this is an album of small pleasures rather than a major performance statement.

BLUES REVIVAL 59: ROBERT PETE WILLIAMS (1914-1980)

Ο Robert Pete Williams αποτελεί, πιθανώς, την κορυφαία ανακάλυψη του blues revival. Κορυφαία, αν αναλογισθούμε τον τρόπο με τον οποίο συνέβη (στις φυλακές Angola το 1959) και κυρίως αν προσμετρήσουμε, στο βαθμό που οφείλουμε να το κάνουμε, δηλαδή στο μέγιστο, την εντελώς ακατάτακτη περίπτωσή του. Ο Robert Pete Williams, παρ’ ότι χοντρικώς εντάσσεται στην ευρύτερη κατηγορία του folk-blues, δεν αποτελεί συνέχεια καμμιάς καταγραμμένης παράδοσης, μετεξέλιξη κανενός στυλ, με την τραγουδοποιητική τεχνική του να μην έλκεται από καμμία προηγούμενη φόρμα. Ακούγοντας έστω και ένα δικό του τραγούδι αντιλαμβάνεσαι αμέσως ότι τίποτα δεν υπάρχει που να τον θυμίζει από το παρελθόν ή το παρόν της τέχνης του. Αποτελώντας λοιπόν «κατηγορία» από μόνος του ο Robert Pete Williams θα υπηρετήσει σθεναρά το στυλ του, αντιστεκόμενος μέχρι πέρας στις δυσκολίες που του δημιουργούσε η γενικότερη άτεγκτη συμπεριφορά του. Περιττό, δε, να πούμε ότι πολλά χρόνια αργότερα, στα 00sπ.χ., τα τραγούδια του θεωρήθηκαν εντελώς hip, συμβατά με τις πιο ουσιαστικές καταβυθίσεις στη μουσική του «χθες», διαρκής πηγή μελέτης και κυρίως λύτρωσης. Σημειώστε, επ’ αυτού, την επανέκδοση του σπάνιου άλμπουμ του στην Ahura Mazda από το 1971 στην Fat Possum, το 2001.

Τον Robert Pete Williams τον ανακάλυψαν στην Angola State Penitentiary (εκεί όπου εξέτιε ποινή φυλάκισης για δολοφονία εν ψυχρώ – σκότωσε κάποιον εν αμύνη, όπως είχε ισχυριστεί, τον Απρίλιο του 1956) οι εθνομουσικολόγοι Harry Oster και Richard B. Allen, το 1959. Ο Dr. Oster, βλέποντας τι ακριβώς είχε μπροστά του, αδιαφορώντας για την ποινική κατάσταση του άσημου φυλακισμένου, θα επιχειρήσει αμέσως να τον απελευθερώσει, πράγμα το οποίον οριστικώς θα καταφέρει το 1964, καθώς μέχρι τότε ο Robert Pete Williamsμπαινόβγαινε στη φυλακή. Εξάλλου, οι πρώτες ηχογραφήσεις του θα γίνουν εκεί, κάτω από πρόχειρες συνθήκες, οι οποίες, πάντως, δεν θα τον εμποδίσουν να δώσει, από την πρώτη στιγμή, έργο ζωής. Αναφερόμαστε, κυρίως, στο άλμπουμ “Those Prison Blues”, μία από τις κορυφαίες field recording στην ιστορία της αμερικανικής μουσικής.

Βαθειά θρησκευόμενος ο Robert Pete Williams, μ’ έναν τρόπο σχεδόν μυστικιστικό και διαρκώς σε κόντρα με τα καλλιτεχνικά και παρακαλλιτεχνικά κυκλώματα στην Αμερική, θα βρεθεί πολλές φορές εκτός δράσης, σαμποταρισμένος από το κυρίως ρεύμα.
Ο John Faheyήταν πάντως εκείνος που θα του δώσει μια στέγη στην Takoma Records το 1966 (το ίδιο είχε πράξει και ο Kenneth S. Goldstein για την Prestige, το 1961), πριν ο Robert Pete Williams πάρει το δρόμο για την Ευρώπη (αν και στην Αγγλία δεν φαίνεται να πήγε, λόγω θεμάτων με την πρότερη φυλάκισή του). Ηχογραφήσεις λοιπόν στην Αυστρία, τη Δυτική Γερμανία και την Ανατολική Γερμανία (στο American Folk Blues Festival του 1966), τη Δανία, τη Γαλλία και λιγότερο την Αμερική, στην οποία πάντα αντιμετώπιζε προβλήματα στο να «περνάει» τη δουλειά του. Ήταν, βλέπετε, οι προοδευτικές απόψεις του, το πάθος του για την ελευθερία, η θέση του για τον πόλεμο στο Βιετνάμ, η ανέχεια, που συχνά εμφανιζόταν στα τραγούδια του, όχι ως μοίρα, αλλά ως όνειδος.
Να υπενθυμίσουμε, τέλος, πως ο Robert Pete Williams εμφανίζεται (και) στην ταινία τού Ροβήρου Μανθούλη από το 1973 Le Blues Entre les DentsΜπλουζ με Σφιγμένα Δόντια, όπως έγινε γνωστή στην Ελλάδα).
