BLUES REVIVAL: ΕΠΙΛΟΓΟΣ

Έφθασε στο τέλος της αυτή η σειρά των (διαδικτυακών) άρθρων, που μπήκαν σε μια σειρά κάτω από την ταμπέλα Blues Revival και που είχαν δημοσιευθεί για πρώτη φορά στο περιοδικό Jazz & Τζαζ από τον Οκτώβριο του 2001 (τεύχος 103), έως και τον Φεβρουάριο του 2004 (τεύχος 131). Άρθρα που τα επιμελήθηκα ξανά, τα ανανέωσα, τα διόρθωσα και φυσικά τα «ξαναχτύπησα», αφού δεν τα είχα σε word, και τα οποία αποτελούν κατά βάση μια σειρά… στοχευμένων βιογραφιών μουσικών του blues (που επανεμφανίστηκαν στα sixties), μαζί με τη… revival δισκογραφία τους (σε LP και σε CD). Όπως είχα γράψει τότε (το 2004) και σ’ εκείνο το τελευταίο άρθρο στο Jazz & Τζαζ

Ξεκινώντας τη συγκεκριμένη σειρά κειμένων είχα εμπρός μου μόνο μιαν απλή λίστα ονομάτων –μάλλον πολλές λίστες, από διάφορες έντυπες ή ηλεκτρονικές πηγές, από τις οποίες προέκυψε η μία τελική– που περιλάμβανε πενήντα εννέα (59) ονόματα. Βεβαίως, κάποιοι blues fans ίσως να αναρωτήθηκαν ή να αναρωτιούνται γιατί να απουσιάζουν, τελικά, από τη συγκεκριμένη σειρά, καλλιτέχνες σαν τους Jesse Fuller, Big Joe Williams και Josh White (ενδεχομένως και άλλοι) – αν και θα πρέπει να σημειώσω, εδώ, πως για κάθε όνομα υπήρξε ξεχωριστή σκέψη σε σχέση με το αν έπρεπε ή όχι να «συμμετάσχει».

Οι προαναφερόμενοι bluesmen, για παράδειγμα, αν και έδρασαν στη δεκαετία του ’60, στην πράξη είχαν μιαν απρόσκοπτη δισκογραφία όλα τα προηγούμενα χρόνια. Δηλαδή ο Big Joe Williams και ο Josh White δεν σταμάτησαν να ηχογραφούν και στα χρόνια του ’40 και σ’ εκείνα του ’50, ο δε Jesse Fuller βρισκόταν στις επάλξεις από τις αρχές του ’50, δίχως κανένας να τον ανακαλύψει. Εν πάση περιπτώσει υπήρχε ένα σκεπτικό (πίσω από κάθε όνομα), που θα μπορούσε ίσως να ήταν και διαφορετικό…

Και κάτι για τη βιβλιογραφία και τις πηγές που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν.
Τα παλαιά βιβλία αποδείχτηκαν, εννοείται, θησαυρός. Αναφέρομαι, βασικά, στις ιστορικές εκδόσεις της βρετανικής Studio Vista / November Books Blues Revival του Bob Groom, Crying for the Carolinesτου Bruce Bastin, Deep South Piano του Karl Gert zur Heide και Blacks, Whites and Blues του Tony Russell. Από πιο πρόσφατα βιβλία σημαντική πηγή βοήθειας αποτέλεσε το καταπληκτικό ChasinThat Devil Music [Miller Freeman, San Francisco 1998] του Gayle Dean Wardlow, φυσικά το All Music Guide to Blues [Miller Freeman, 2nd edition 1999], η Ιστορία του Blues [Απόπειρα, 1995] του Paul Oliver, αλλά και πολλές άλλες πηγές, που δεν είναι εύκολο να καταγραφούν, όπως εξώφυλλα δίσκων, κατάλογοι εμπόρων ή εταιρειών, περιοδικά, έντυπες δισκογραφίες (δες φωτό… Blue Horizon), sites στο ίντερνετ, όπως το discogs, το eBay κ.ά., βιβλία ειδικότερου ενδιαφέροντος, για συγκεκριμένες αναζητήσεις κ.λπ.
Το ψάξιμο δεν σταματά και οριστικό τέλος δεν υπάρχει, καθώς νέα στοιχεία και κυρίως νέες ανέκδοτες εγγραφές πάντα θα έρχονται και θα προστίθενται στην ήδη καταγραμμένη ιστορία…

Brickwork Lizards is an 8-piece Turkabilly band from Oxford, UK that bridges the divide between Arabic and Western music. The band took shape over a chance encounter at a party when Egyptian vocalist and oud-player Tarik Beshir met Oxford rap scene stalwart Tom O’Hawk. Discovering a mutual love of the 1930s harmony group The Ink Spots, they dreamed up an entirely new sound that would combine pre-war jazz with Arabic and Middle Eastern music, paying tribute along the way to countless other styles. Over the ten years since, Brickwork Lizards have refined their line-up, adding guitar, drums, trumpet, cello, violin and double-bass, while building up a dedicated fan base with hundreds of gigs and festival appearances across the UK. The band’s eight members draw on a wide range of musical experiences, from critically-acclaimed Arabic classical ensembles (Oxford Maqam) to working with chart-topping pop groups (Saint Etienne). PCD is the debut studio album by American girl group The Pussycat Dolls, released on September 12, 2005, by A&M Records. Based in Los Angeles, Warm Drag are Vashti Windish (K-Holes, Golden Triangle) on vocals and Paul Quattrone (Oh Sees, !!!, Money Lemon) on two Akai MPC 1000 samplers. “I basically wanna make Bomb Squad versions of rock ’n’ roll songs,” says Quattrone. “It sounds weird but I can hear a common ground where girl groups, dub, harsh noise, minimal synth, repetitious industrial, voodoo percussion, power electronics, black leather jacket rock ’n’ roll, and DJ Screw-inspired slowing down/pitching down of samples all meet,” says Windish. “The combination of these two talents results in one of the best debut albums in ages. It’s like Siouxsie fronting Martin Rev only better”, says In The Red.

Lannie Flowers isn’t the only Pengwin with a pen. The drummer can write, too. And man, can he sing. With vocal chops most of us would die for, Danny Wilkerson’s new album makes one wonder what the hell he was doing behind a drum kit all this time. Wilkerson, his first solo effort, is chock full-o great tunes performed at the highest level.

wilkersonPunctuated by the production of Bleu McAuley and sound engineer Ducky Carlisle (more on these two later), the sound is big and the arrangements are McCartney-esque. You’ll hear other influences, too including ELO, Queen, The Sweet and Burt Bacharach.

The aforementioned Bacharach springs to mind from the moment one hears the opening moments of “Everybody Loves to Love”. The arrangement is fluid not unlike something you might expect to hear on Ram or Abbey Road. By the way, the disc was mastered at Abbey Road Studios.

“Enough for Somebody” would have been a hit in practically any decade but this one. It’s lyrically thoughtful and catchy as hell. And with this kind of radio friendly production, it would have been a staple on every station’s playlist in better days. “Endless Haze” is a lyrical gem about alcoholism while “You Still Owe Me a Kiss” is pure pop.

Paul Collins is one of the most enduring cult rockers of the late seventies and a founding member of the legendary band The Nerves (with Jack Lee and Peter Case). He started his solo career in 1979 with the release of his album The Beat on Columbia Records under the management of the legendary Bill Graham, and has released more than 11 studio albums as Paul Collins, The Beat or Paul Collins’ Beat.
