John Lee Hooker is a master of the primal, hypnotic Delta blues. Accompanied by nothing other than a bare beat of the drums (if not only the stomp of his own feet), “The Healer” can mesmerize. The simple, but effective, tools of his trade are one-chord songs and a ton of downbeat emotion. This collection of Muse Records recordings dates back to the ’50s. Hooker had a bad year in 1951. Or one would think from the opening track, “I Bought You a Brand New Home.” He bought her a new home, “all dressed up inside,” and a new car, too. As the sad tale is related, she pushes him out of her life and he sees another man driving that car. Supporting his indigo minimalism, the bassist and second guitar on these sessions is barely noticeable. One thing you cannot help but notice is the ache and pain that the absence of money and a woman’s love will do to a man.

Scott Mulvahill – Himalayas (2018)

We fell in love with the styling of Scott Mulvahill as soon as this track started. Alone with his upright bass, Mulvahill has a unique act that combines virtuoso level bass work and a strong, accessible pop vocal.
What impressed us most was the way he plays the bass as a percussive instrument, knocking or slapping on the wooden surfaces to emit an almost bongo-drum sound. His arrangement of “Himalayas” is quite skillful, keeping the listener captive with jazzy licks and quick switches between plucking and bowing the thick strings.
Mulvahill’s songwriting has received honors from the International Songwriting Competition, John Lennon Songwriting Contest and American Songwriter Magazine’s 30th Anniversary Contest. He has worked as a studio musician on the albums of various artists and has performed with Allison Krauss, Bary Gibb, Bruce Hornsby, Peter Frampton and more.

ΣΑΚΗΣ ΠΑΠΑΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΥ ένα νέο improv βινύλιο μετά από 30 χρόνια
Πόσα χρόνια είχε να τυπώσει σόλο πιάνο άλμπουμ ο Σάκης Παπαδημητρίου; Είκοσι εννέα; Από την εποχή τού γαλλικού “Piano Cellules” (1989); Και πόσα χρόνια είχε να τυπώσει βινύλιο; Τριάντα; Από την εποχή του βρετανικού “Piano Oracles” (1988); Αν είναι όντως έτσι, τότε το “Piano Voices” [To Pikap Records, 2018], η πιο πρόσφατη κυκλοφορία τού Παπαδημητρίου, δεν μπορεί παρά να έχει (και) έναν χαρακτήρα εορτασμού – για έναν πιανίστα, αυτοσχεδιαστή, και συγγραφέα και άλλα διάφορα, που έχει συνδέσει το όνομά του με την ύπαρξη και βεβαίως με την ανάπτυξη της jazz στην Ελλάδα.

Ο Παπαδημητρίου, για όσους νεότερους δεν γνωρίζουν, είναι ένας πιανίστας εντελώς πρωτότυπος. Σίγουρα για τα εγχώρια jazz και improv δισκογραφικά δεδομένα, αλλά και διεθνώς (όπως μαρτυρούν οι διάφορες παρουσίες του σε εταιρείες του εξωτερικού – ήδη από τα χρόνια του ’80). Η πρωτοτυπία έγκειται στην ικανότητά του να δημιουργεί ολοκληρωμένους ηχητικούς κόσμους, χρησιμοποιώντας πολυποίκιλα το πιάνο του. Prepared piano με παίξιμο «από μέσα» και κανονικό piano-playing, ικανά να συνθέσουν μιαν ηχητική αφήγηση μακριά από το αναμενόμενο. Ό,τι πράττει, εν τοιαύτη περιπτώσει, και στο “Piano Voices”, το τελευταίο long-play του, που είναι ηχογραφημένο στη Θεσσαλονίκη και που τυπώνεται για την ετικέτα Το Πικάπ (που δεν είναι μόνον ετικέτα, μα και καφε-μπαρ, δισκάδικο, ραδιοφωνικός σταθμός, εκθεσιακός χώρος κ.λπ.).
Οι αναφορές του Παπαδημητρίου, και σε τούτη τη νεότερη αυτοσχεδιαστική πιανιστική κυκλοφορία, θα είναι πάντα δύο ειδών. Τζαζ και... κλασικές. Αλλά τι τζαζ; Και τι... κλασικές;
Να πούμε λοιπόν πως στο “Piano Voices” μνημονεύεται η πορεία τού προχωρημένου τζαζ-πιάνου, που μπορεί να ξεκινά από τον Thelonious Monkκαι περνώντας από τον Cecil Taylor, τον Paul Bley και τον Ran Blake(πιανίστες με τελείως διαφορετικά χαρακτηριστικά, αλλά ταυτοχρόνως και ιστορικοί καινοτόμοι) να καταλήγει όχι μόνο στον Keith Jarrett (“Piano voices D”), μα κυρίως στους αβαντγκαρντίστες, στον John Cageκαι τον Steve Reich, και βεβαίως στον «πατέρα» όλων, τον Erik Satie (με τα minimalεπαναλαμβανόμενα και διακεκομμένα μοτίβα να μεταφέρουν αυτήν ακριβώς την πιανιστική περιπέτεια-λειτουργία).
Δεν είναι εύκολο να γράψεις για μια μουσική, που πραγματώνεται και υψώνεται τη στιγμή τής γέννησής της (επί τόπου). Για μια μουσική, καθαρή, αυθόρμητη, που να μπορεί να προβάλλει… οράματα και καταστάσεις. Αξίζει, βασικά, να είσαι εκεί τη στιγμή που δημιουργείται, που απλώνεται στο χώρο και το χρόνο, για να νοιώσεις την κλιμάκωσή της και εν τέλει τη πληθωρική παρουσία της. (Και όσοι έχουν παρακολουθήσει σόλο live τού Σάκη Παπαδημητρίου ξέρουν για το τι ακριβώς συζητάμε). Βεβαίως και ο δίσκος έχει την αξία του – πόσω μάλλον όταν αυτός επιχειρεί να αποτυπώσει τη στιγμή με τον πρέποντα σεβασμό σ’ εκείνο που συνέβη. Δίχως στούντιο επεξεργασίες εννοώ, overdubs και τα τοιαύτα.
Ένα τέτοιο άλμπουμ, καθαρό και απόλυτο έχουμε εδώ. Ένα άλμπουμ που ακούγεται με αυτονόητο ενδιαφέρον – ιδίως, έτσι όπως «προχωρά» και όπως ανεβαίνει εντατικά προς μια… φοβερή δεύτερη πλευρά.
