CHARLES AZNAVOUR, OTIS RUSH, MARTY BALIN απώλειες

Ακόμη και τον Peter Green [όταν ο ίδιος πάνω στο “All your love (I miss loving)” έγραφε το “Black magic woman”]. Ήταν ογδόντα τεσσάρων ετών.

Πέθανε ο Marty Balin, των Jefferson Airplane, στα 76 του. Tο τραγούδι είναι δικό του και το λέει μαζί με την Grace Slick

Palu and Donggala Earthquake and Tsunami Relief

2018_09_30_55092_1538285740._large.jpg

On 28 September, 2019, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit near the city of Palu in Central Sulawesi. The earthquake was followed by a destructive tsunami which wiped out Palu’s coastline, and even later by deadly mudslides. Thousands are feared dead, with even more now homeless.

This area and its beautiful music has featured in Aural Archipelago posts a number of times, from the Palu-style karambangan music of guitarist Roky to lute and flute-filled dadendate music and yori mouth harp sounds of the nearby Donggala countryside, and most recently the mystical lalove flute music of Ojo Pedati. Of those musicians, at this time I’ve only been able to confirm Roky as surviving the disaster: the fate of the others, incredible musicians and human beings, remain to be seen.

Palu and the surrounding area is in desperate need of help for the ongoing relief efforts: food, water, medical supplies, and more are in short supply. For the next month, ALL donations to Aural Archipelago will be forwarded to trusted Indonesian relief organizations working on the ground in Sulawesi. Every dollar counts to help the people of Central Sulawesi start to rebuild their lives.

Donations can be sent directly through Stripe or PayPal at the Donate page.

For those more comfortable with donating directly, the Jakarta Post also has a list of trusted organizations and ways to donate.

Grand Old Grizzly – Pure Country Pyrite (2018)

With their first album, Grand Old Grizzly was quickly nominated for “Best New Band” and “Best Country/Americana” act by the Houston Press, and their second album, CosmoNada, made it to the national Americana charts. On September 7th, Grand Old Grizzly will release their third studio album, Pure Country Pyrite, full of rollicking guitar licks and pumping drums interspersed with tender melodies, irony and wit. Their live performances are exactly that: alive and kicking, and “Gundowner,” below, will give you a taste.

Grand Old Grizzly is Will Thomas (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Paul Beebe (lead guitar, keys, mandolin, backing vocals), Mark Riddell (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Isaias Gil (Drums). Frontman and primary songwriter Thomas is a fierce storyteller who concedes “I have some weird shit to say that no one else is saying.” “Gundowners” opens the album with a trailblazing chase featuring a pair of murderous rampaging lovers on a crime spree, and it doesn’t end well for these two. As Thomas says, “If rock ‘n’ roll ain’t killing you, you’re probably not doing it right.”

Of “Gundowners,” specifically, writer Will Thomas told Elmore, “’Gundowners‘ is really just a classic sociopath’s love story. It’s thick with irony and irrational conflict, and hopes to make a statement deeper than the surface story might suggest. A couple of murderous thieves faced with some feelings they weren’t planning on, nor were they prepared to handle, get their comeuppance, kinda… While it’s a pretty fantastic story in itself, it’s actually pretty relatable on an everyday level. It’s a Romeo and Juliet-meets-Bonnie and Clyde-meets “Ghost Riders in the Sky” type song. Heavily influenced by both Marty Robbins and AC/DC. It was written from beginning to end in one sitting. Not terribly common for me. Very little changed from that point on. Actually, the first thing I wrote was the opening riff, then the rest just spilled out. One of the more straightforward songs I’ve written Also, ‘Gundowners’ continues the album theme of always having a Western story song. We have one on each of the first two albums.”

BULLFROG were born in Munich in 1973. Their brand of krautrock, featuring mostly guitar and some mean organ play, is rather melodious and a bit reminiscent of German art rockers JANE. Their latest incarnation consisted of keyboardist Harald Kaltenecker, guitarist Sebastian Leitner, bassist Vincent Trost, drummer Ali Halmatoglu and vocalist Gerd Hoch (who committed suicide in the summer of ’95).

Phil Collins – Play Well With Others (2018)

He has been a member one of one of Britain’s most significant rock bands and one of the world’s biggest male solo stars, but Phil Collins was always eager to collaborate with an eclectic range of artists. Spanning drums, vocals, production, songwriting, and more, Phil Collins’ many talents have been employed by some of his biggest musical heroes.

Now Phil Collins has compiled a 59-track collection of his collaborative highlight in the shape of PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS. The compilation will be released as a 4-CD boxed set and as a digital download on September 28. The following week, Collins will begin his “Not Dead Yet, Live!” tour on October 5 in Ft. Lauderdale, his first major North American tour in 12 years. Full itinerary listed below.

It’s a boxed set about the byways of a career that stretches from the ersatz psychedelia of Flaming Youth, through the legendary 70s recordings with Brand X, Brian Eno, Robert Fripp and John Cale and into the superstar era of the 80s, when Collins became the go-to man for legends in need of a fresh lease of life. It extends into the years when he had the status to do whatever he wanted. Form a big band with Quincy Jones conducting and Tony Bennett singing? Why the hell not!

The title comes from a joke gift that happened to contain a profound truth. Chester Thompson, the man who became Genesis’s day-to-day drummer once Collins had become the frontman, arranged to have a special birthday present made for him. It wasn’t a hugely expensive gift – just a t-shirt. On the front, Thompson had a slogan printed to reflect his bandmate’s willingness to take his drums along to pretty much any session, his pleasure in working as a producer to help musicians he respected make the records they wanted: “Plays well with others.”

Collins started branching out in the mid-70s to delve into parts of his musical taste that didn’t fit with Genesis’s sound. The band’s producer John Anthony recognized Collins as a musician with the appetite and ability to adapt to different musical environments. “He was producing all kinds of records, and he would use me because he loves good drumming,” remembers Collins. “We used to go into Trident Studios at midnight, just for the fun of playing, and go home at six or seven in the morning. I enjoyed the possibility of just playing and occasionally being paid for it, and occasionally not. It wasn’t for money, it was just for the hell of playing.”

Working on Peter Gabriel’s third solo album resulted in Collins and engineer Hugh Padgham stumbling across the gated reverb drum sound that would dominate 80s pop. That was first heard on Gabriel’s track “Intruder” and later when hit the charts when used in the drum fill in Collins’ signature hit “In The Air Tonight.”

In the wake of his solo success with the Face Value album, Collins became sought after by already successful artists who needed to do something different, helping Adam Ant, Eric Clapton, Robert Plant, and Abba’s Frida into new eras in their careers.

PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS is a set that captures the dizzying variety of one of the most successful stories in music history. That’s what has earned him the respect of so many musicians of so many different genres – the Urban Renewal tribute album, represented here by Lil’ Kim, being a classic example.

Dwiki Dharmawan: acoustic piano
Nguyên Lê: electric guitar, soundscapes
Charles Benavent: bass guitar
Yaron Stavi: upright bass
Asaf Sirkis: drums
Sa’at Syah: suling flute and vocals (1-4, 7-8)
Ade Rudiana: kendang percussion (1-4, 7-8)
Dewi Gita: lead vocal (3)
Teuku Hariansya: Rapa’I Acehnese percussions (1)
Indra Maulana Keubitbit: Rapa’I Acehnese percussions (1
Nyoman Windha’s Gamelan Jass Jegog: Balinese gamelan & percussions (4)
Smit: vocals and LaLove traditional Sulawesi flute (6)

Those who like their jazz spiced with different flavours should be sure to sample Dwiki Dharmawan. New to me, the Indonesian keyboard artist and producer has been active since the mid-1980s, and makes music that blends Asian traditions with other idioms in a sometimes heady brew.

This latest release features Dharmawan on acoustic piano with regular collaborators Yaron Stavi on bass and Asaf Sirkis on drums. But we are mostly a long way from jazz piano trio territory. The core ensemble also includes Nguyên Lê on “electric guitar and soundscapes” and Spaniard Carles Benavent on fretless electric bass.

Lê feeds MoonJune records’ penchant for big helpings of guitar soloing, but his soundscapes are prominent too. Add half a dozen guests on a variety of traditional Indonesian percussion, flutes and vocals, and on one track the bamboo instruments of a Jegog gamelan ensemble, and the range of sounds on offer broadens yet further.

The result is a kaleidoscopic brand of fusion, jazz and classical-infused piano workouts clearly in view one minute, then dissolving to yield to flute or vocal passages that lean toward a different tradition and, some of the time, a different tonality. A few tracks sustain a single mood. Dewi Gita’s single melismatic vocal on Impenan centres the melancholic song in a distinctively Indonesian space. More often, the shifting line-ups move swiftly between idioms, along with hefty wodges of old-school fusion (You’d guess Dharmawan encountered the Mahavishnu Orchestra at an impressionable age) inserted in pieces that may begin in a more reflective mode.

It doesn’t entirely work. Some of the shifts seem arbitrary. There are a few longeurs – unfortunately on the most ambitious, or at any rate longest, offering, the almost half hour, two-part Rumah Batu Suite. But this is generally thoughtful, well-realised music with some refreshingly unfamiliar ingredients. For me, one to return to occasionally rather than revisit often, but well worth investigating for all that.
