Spain – Mandala Brush (2018)

New album Mandala Brush from the legendary Los Angeles group Spain is finally out now! Spain is the brainchild of Josh Haden and their music has been described as a unique patchwork of “indie pop slowcore americana free jazz.” Mandala Brush traverses this stylistic territory but stretches further beyond these traditional notions of genre or category, providing the listener with a beautiful pastiche of organic sounds to form a cohesive musical narrative.

Mandala Brush features longtime collaborators Kenny Lyon (guitar), Shon Sullivan (acoustic guitar, keyboards) and Danny Frankel (drums). The album also features musical contributions from Josh’s sisters Petra Haden (violin, backing vocals) and Tanya Haden (cello, backing vocals), along with Mike Bolger (accordion, trumpet), Matthew DeMerritt (flute, saxophone), and David Ralicke (clarinet, flute, trombone), all regulars at Spain’s long-running Los Angeles residency at the Love Song Bar where all of Mandala Brush‘s songs were developed and refined.

Regarding the album title Mandala Brush, Josh Haden says, “A mandala is an ancient and sacred symbol representing the oneness of the universe. The ‘brush’ in the context of this album is a modern and secular tool used in computer art applications. The mandala brush helps facilitate the creation of mandalas, but is never a finished mandala in and of itself.”

The O’Reillys and the Paddyhats – Green Blood (2018)

When a German band makes Irish music and calls their record Green Blood, it makes you think if something went wrong in the thought process. But The O’Reillys and the Paddyhats are by no means a goose who thinks it’s a fox. They are much more fox and goose in one. Because Green Blood is the term for what the seven Irish Folk Punkers and their audience have felt for years. It does not stand for the origin of the green island, but for the love of it. That’s why it’s true what’s sung in the popular Irish Pub song: “Wherever you go around the world, you’ll find an Irish Pub”. You do not have to be an Irishman to love the Celtic music developed by migration and immigration. You do not have to have red pubic hair and shamrocks in your wallet to drink Guinness. The stereotypes are old and yet there are so many in them and the love for the green island again. Now finally it says one, whether you come from Hong Kong or Castrop Rauxel – you, too can have the green blood in you. This new album will cast a spell on you. 13 titles about love, sex, fight, old and new dreams but also songs about worries can be found on ‘Green Blood.’ It’s an album that builds the bridge to those who have always carried the green blood and those who want it. Because the yearning for Green Blood is insatiable.

John Martyn – In Session At The BBC (2006)

These are the complete sessions that John Martyn recorded for two BBC disc jockeys between 1973 and 1978, and though a few have seen release elsewhere before, the majority are new to CD and a welcome addition to the Martyn canon. There’s plenty of electric improvisation here, including “Devil Got My Woman” (really “I’d Rather Be the Devil”) and “Inside” (better known as “Inside Out”), which get extensive workouts, and there’s a 1978 take on “Small Hours” that ends the disc on a lovely, aching note. In between there’s plenty of acoustic music (four tracks with a barely audible Danny Thompson on bass) that trawls through Martyn’s work on three classic albums from his golden period. He pulls out some excellent performances, his fingers wonderfully agile, and his voice as deep as the bottom of a bottle of Scotch. This is good enough to be more than a footnote; for Martyn fans it’s essential.

ajazz%2Bseirios.jpg

Agnes%2BObel.jpg

The historical importance of the Wailers is undeniable. They were one of the very first, if not the first, of the American garage bands. Backing Rockin’ Robin Roberts, they revamped an obscure R&B song called “Louie Louie” into a 1961 local hit that served as the prototype for the countless subsequent versions of the most popular garage song of the ’60s. And their stomping, hard-nosed R&B/rock fusion inspired the Sonics, who took the Wailers’ raunch to unimaginable extremes. While they anticipated the British Invasion bands with their brash, self-contained sound, their inability to write first-rate original material, as well as their rather outdated sax and organ-driven frat rock, put them in a distinctly lower echelon. As the decade progressed, the group did absorb mild folk-rock and psychedelic influences without great effect, either commercially or on their sound itself.

VA – Too Slow to Disco Brasil compiled by Ed Motta (2018)

$
0
0

Too Slow to DiscoBrazil’s rich music history has been extensively anthologised over the years with compilations and reissues aplenty documenting native styles like samba and bossa nova alongside various flirtations with foreign imports like psych and funk. You’ll be hard pressed to find much, if any, archival coverage beyond the mid-’70s, however; the Western consensus seems to suggest the country’s musicians somehow lost their mojo.
Too Slow to Disco have form in serving up corrective compilations from less fashionable eras, having previously issued celebrated odes to mid-’70s West Coast rock and ’80s AOR. For this latest offering – concentrating chiefly on the latter decade’s Brazilian boogie scene – they’ve chosen Ed Motta as their helmsman.

170 MB  320 ** FLAC

Nephew of soul legend Tim Maia and one of Brazil’s most successful MPB, soul, jazz and AOR artists in his own right, Motta’s own music has often been informed by a taste for the immaculately-crafted, a tenet that’s shared by many of his choices here.

Precise, technically adept and brilliantly played productions are the order of the day, with tightly-packed horn sections, funky guitars, muscular basslines, and dreamy synths delivering up energising shots of pop-inflected boogie; think Earth, Wind & Fire wired on sugar cane and decked out in Hawaiian shirts. The chief architect of this sound was Lincoln Olivetti, the producer and arranger who came to dominate the funkier end of Brazilian music in the late 70s and early 80s. His distinctive imprint, through both his own productions and those of his numerous followers, is writ large across much of the music.

Despite the obvious US influences, it’s an indigenous sense of harmony that makes this a thoroughly local concern. There’s a sense of ongoing musical legacy throughout, made implicit by Motta’s choice of Filó Machado’s Quero Pouco, Quero Muito as opener. Kicking off with a snippet of raucous carnival music, the track segues into a tightly-coiled slice of boogie replete with a soaring, unmistakably Brazilian chorus. Elsewhere, among all the polish and precision are some pleasing foils: Sandra Sá’s rough-hewn vocals add grit to the low-slung funk of Guarde Minha Voz while Altay Veloso appears to have invited the local football team into the studio during the recording sessions for Débora, whose mass-sung, off-key chorus provides an endearing amateurishness.

Away from all that uplifting soul, Guilherme Arantes’ Coisas Do Brasil and Biafra’s Leão Ferido mine a more melancholic sense of Brazilian saudade, while Roupa Nova’s Clarear and Kiko Zambianchi’s Estréia offer up two shimmering examples from the contemporaneous AOR scene. Former Os Mutante Rita Lee weighs in with the breezy pop rock of Atlântida.

It’s left to Lincoln Olivetti to provide the compilation highlight, however. His genius is displayed to coruscating effect on Junior Mendes’ Copacabana Sadia, a towering slice of hi-energy, feel-good funk. As gaudily 80s as Don Johnson revving up a Ferrari dressed in pastel slacks, its overt hedonism and slick execution can’t disguise a warm, generous, and giddily optimistic heart.
