This is the first ever record we have from Guinee Bissau. The music
has a feel, slightly connected to the music from Angola. Both are
Portuguese speaking. They are a part by great distance so probably
I am talking nonsense but that’s my first feeling. One way or the other,
it sounds quite interesting. It seems this album used to be very expensive
but the recent discovery of stock made it affordable now. Listen..

Hier hebben we de eerste plaat die we zien uit Guinee Bissau. De muziek
doet rakelings denken aan die uit Angola. Misschien omdat beide landen
Portugees talig zijn, misschien raaskal ik nu maar zo voelt het. Hoe dan
ook, het klinkt zeer interessant en spannend op de één of andere manier.
Het schijnt dat deze plaat een tijd lang heel duur was maar door de recente
ontdekking van een partijtje verstopte exemplaren is hij nu redelijker
geprijsd. Luister naar N’Kassa Cobra..

Country traditionalist and Nashville carpenter JP Harris has taken enough time away from swinging hammers and hanging drywall to record and ready the release his latest record Sometimes Dogs Bark at Nothing coming October 5th via Free Dirt Records. The new album was produced by Morgan Jahnig, best known as the upright bass player for Old Crow Medicine Show.

“We took a counter-intuitive approach,” JP Harris says about the new album. “We had no pre-production. There were no rehearsals. We basically had a whole studio full of multi-instrumentalists, a six-piece band total, for the whole recording session. Everybody played at least two instruments. It was a really interesting way to do it and I think it helped us avoid anybody, including myself, overthinking the songs.”

Οι Javier Piñango και JuanAntonio Nieto είναι ισπανοί πειραματιστές – και όχι πρωτοφανέρωτοι, αφού συμμετέχουν σε συγκροτήματα ήδη από τα χρόνια του’80. Ο Piñango, για παράδειγμα, έχει υπάρξει μέλος των noise-industrialCerdos, προς το τέλος εκείνης της δεκαετίας, των ambient Druhbαργότερα κ.λπ., ενώ ο Nietoήταν ντράμερ των νιου-γουεβάδων Alphaville, στις αρχές των eighties, έχοντας και προσωπική δισκογραφία από το 2009 και μετά (οι πληροφορίες από το discogs). Τώρα, αυτοί οι δύο μουσικοί εργάζονται μαζί για την παραγωγή ενός LP, που έχει τίτλο “Afterglow” και το οποίον είναι τυπωμένο σε εκατό αριθμημένα αντίτυπα. Πρόκειται, δε, για μια από κοινού κυκλοφορία των εταιρειών Plus Timbreκαι Anazitisi Records.

Διαβάζοντας τις πληροφορίες του discogs και ακούγοντας μερικά κομμάτια στο YouTube, θα πω πως ό,τι ακούγεται στο “Afterglow” είναι συμβατό με την πορεία των δύο μουσικών μέσα στις δεκαετίες. Το να πηγαίνεις δηλαδή από τις πιο… σαφείς και καθορισμένες εγγραφές προς τις πιο abstract είναι, χοντρικά, λογικό, για πολλούς μουσικούς, που αφού απέδειξαν πως μπορούν να γράψουν και πιο συμβατικά πράγματα υιοθέτησαν στην πορεία ένα πιο ριζοσπαστικό, όπως το λέμε, και πειραματικό ύφος. Τούτο πράττουν και οι Ισπανοί, στο “Afterglow” με πολύ ενδιαφέροντα αποτελέσματα.

Το άλμπουμ έχει τέσσερα tracks, δύο ένα πλευρά. Το πρώτο τιτλοφορείται “Unhuman restlessness” και είναι φυσικά πνιγμένο στα ηλεκτρονικά, στους βόμβους, τις αναδράσεις κ.λπ. Υπάρχει ένα κοντίνουο, κάπως minimal-noise και με αυξομειούμενη ένταση, πάνω στο οποίο «εισβάλλουν» διάφοροι αλλόκοτοι ήχοι –άλλοι ακούγονται περισσότερο περιβαλλοντικοί και άλλοι περισσότερο βιομηχανικοί–, που το μετατρέπουν σ’ ένα… οπτικό ακρόαμα. Τις εικόνες τις διαλέγει ο καθένας μόνος του… Στο “Stranger than fear”, που κλείνει την Side1, οι Piñango και Nieto, οικοδομούν ένα πιο… φοβικό περιβάλλον, με χαμηλής έντασης θορύβους στην αρχή, που… μεγαλύνονται στη διαδρομή, σαν ένα… τσουνάμι, που βουίζει δυνατότερα και δυνατότερα, όσο πλησιάζει προς την ακτή, πριν ξεσπάσει στη στεριά (μέσω μιας διαδικασίας που κρατάει... ώρες, δηλαδή, εδώ, τέσσερα-πέντε λεπτά). .

Στο “Sleep, not oblivion”, της Side 2, η (ηλεκτρονική) διαχείριση αποκτά κάπως… krautχαρακτηριστικά (early Klaus Schulze π.χ., “Canaxis 5” και τέτοια). Οι παρεμβολές, που είναι κατά τόπους πολύ έντονες, βοηθούν προς την… εφιαλτική ολοκλήρωση. Το “Dreamy dissonance”, που ακολουθεί και ολοκληρώνει το LP, δεν έχει ιδιαίτερες διαφορές από το προηγούμενό του. Σαν experimental-electro κυλάει με ενδιαφέρον, με συνεχείς industrial παρεμβάσεις, ραδιο-βραχέα εφφέ κ.λπ., κινούμενο σε ακόμη πιο… υπόγειες (και άρα υποβλητικότερες) διαδρομές.

Το “Afterglow” απευθύνεται ούτως ή άλλως σε πολύ λίγους και αυτοί, είναι σίγουρο, πως θα το εκτιμήσουν.

Το art-rock, progressive μνημείο των New Trolls και του Luis Enriquez Bacalov, από το 1971, σε μια αρκετά επαγγελματική (με τη σωστή έννοια!) live εκτέλεση στην Τεργέστη του 2007.

Από τη βασική ομάδα μπορεί να έχουν απομείνει μόνον ο Vittorio De Scalzi φωνή, πλήκτρα, κλασική κιθάρα, φλάουτο και ο Nico Di Palo φωνή, πλήκτρα, αλλά η δουλειά που έχει γίνει είναι τέλεια!

Να ρίξουμε και κανα λαϊκό... 

Από τους 2-3 καλύτερους καζαντζιδικούς τραγουδιστές που βγήκαν στη δεκαετία του ’60. Ο Ανδρέας Ζακυνθινάκης, που έφυγε πολύ γρήγορα από τη ζωή, στα 46 του, και που κάποτε (1979) είχε κάνει μια μεγάλη… υπόγεια επιτυχία, το «Επαναστατώ». 

Από τους λίγους τραγουδιστές που μπορούσαν να πουν λεβέντικα Καζαντζίδη σε δεύτερη εκτέλεση (χωρίς να ντροπιάζουν τα τραγούδια του), ο Ζακυνθινάκης, υπήρξε μεγάλη φωνή, που πήγε μάλλον σκασμένος…

Το 45άρι αυτό, με τις «Αλλοτινές μου εποχές» (που το ακούτε στα σχόλια), προέρχεται από το 1969 και το ας-το-πούμε περίεργο είναι (αν και τέτοια συνέβαιναν, για διαφόρους λόγους) πως στην πρώτη πλευρά του δεν έχει τραγούδι με τον Ζακυνθινάκη, αλλά με τον Πάνο Γαβαλά (και τη Ρία Κούρτη).

Ο Αζναβούρ δεν ήταν ποτέ ένας τυπικός τραγουδιστής της αγάπης. Ήταν συνάμα και άξιος τραγουδοποιός, έγραφε δηλαδή μουσικές και λόγια - ενίοτε και με πολύ σοβαρό κοινωνικό περιεχόμενο. Όπως κάνει εδώ, στο “Comme ils disent” του 1972. Ένα από τα ωραιότερα τραγούδια με θέμα την ομοφυλοφιλία, που έχουν ποτέ γραφτεί…

Τη «συμφωνία των Πρεσπών» την ψήφισαν οι Αλβανοί, που χέστηκαν για το πώς θα ονομάζονται τα Σκόπια –αυτούς το μόνο που τους ενδιαφέρει είναι η παράδοση των πάντων στους Αμερικάνους και στην ΕΕ– και επίσης το 1/3 (και λιγότερο) των Σλαβομακεδόνων. Καταλαβαίνει κανείς, και ανεξαρτήτως των χοντράδων που λέει ο Κοτζιάς, πως τέτοια «συμφωνία» δεν είναι εύκολο να περάσει, χωρίς… παρατράγουδα.

Σαν να μην έγινε το δημοψήφισμα. Για τα μάτια του κόσμου. Με αποχή 65% και με… σταλινικό ΝΑΙ το πράγμα έχει ως εξής. Ο Ζάεφ θα προσπαθήσει να περάσει τη συμφωνία στη Βουλή. Δύσκολο, αν όχι αδύνατο. Αν δεν… θα πάει σε εκλογές, ελπίζοντας σε πλειοψηφία που θα τον στηρίξει στην αλλαγή του συντάγματος. Τρέχα γύρευε δηλαδή…
Καμμένος-Τσίπρας μαζί μέχρι την… άλλη ζωή.

Πάλι καλά που ο Μετρονόμος ξανατύπωσε το δεύτερο…

Gryphon in the 21st century? Surely not? These medieval revivalists captured the popular imagination back in 1973 when they performed in doublet and hose and were mobbed by schoolgirls outside the V & A. They faltered a little in the late seventies when they imploded up their own crumhorns. But, in spite of several reunions in the past decade or so we never expected a new album (although one was mooted back in 2007).

The problem with a “reinvention” is which way musically do they go? A return to Henry VIII rock style or perhaps reflecting their later, more progressive leanings after they’d toured with Yes.

‘Reinvention’ is perhaps best described as an amalgam of their previous styles but with a bit more folk-tinged humour (and vocal) thrown into the mix. Oh, and a bit of parlour music.

Mainstay now is original guitarist Graeme Taylor, but the irreplaceable Brian Gulland thankfully remains together with fearless drummer Dave Oberle. They are joined by the multi-instrumentalist Andy Findon, bassist Rory McFarlane (who supplies the attractive ‘Bathsheba’) and long-standing “new” member Graham Preskett on violin and keyboards.

Lapsed Gryphon fans should find something appealing here whether it’s the catchy ‘Rhubarb Crumhorn’ and ‘A Futuristic Auntyquarian’ or the more “serious” ‘Haddock’s Eyes’ which sets Lewis Carroll to music.

At times it all sounds like chamber music for a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, to be enjoyed in wood panelled rooms whilst gorging on cream cakes.

If ‘Reinvention’ does lack the sheer flamboyance of Richard Harvey’s earlier contributions it is nevertheless a fine statement and in keeping with the band’s traditions. Curiouser and curiouser.

To make Certainty Waves, their seventh album as The Dodos, guitarist Meric Long and percussionist Logan Kroeber had to forget everything they knew about what it meant to be The Dodos.

Like the duo’s breakout sophomore album Visiter (which celebrates its 10-year anniversary in 2018), Certainty Waves finds The Dodos embracing the unlimited possibilities of a time when there were no preconceptions of what the band should sound like. Questions like whether the band needed to be more than just “acoustic guitar and drums,” and just what exactly the ratio should be of acoustic vs. electric guitar suddenly took a backseat to the realization that so much emphasis was mistakenly being put on form rather than spirit.
