‘Look Now’ is beautiful in its simplicity, reflective in its lyrical vision, surrounded by melodies and orchestrations that are nothing short of heavenly. It’s the first album Costello has made with The Imposters since the 2008 release of ‘Momofuku’ and his first new album since the acclaimed 2013 Roots collaboration, ‘Wise Up Ghost’. The album was co-produced by Elvis and Sebastian Krys – the Latin Grammy Producer of the Year for 2007 and 2015, whose love and understanding of music spans both hemispheres. Sebastian had worked extensively with Pete and Davey in the Los Angeles studios, so it’s no surprise that this dynamic rhythm section was incredibly well-prepared for the recording sessions. “When Pete and Davey are in this kind of rare form, it’s wise to get on the back-beat with your Telecaster and stay out of their way”, said Costello.

Exactly three years since the release of his last solo LP, John Grant returns with his new album Love Is Magic, released 12th October via Bella Union.

“Each record I make is more of an amalgamation of who I am,” says John Grant. “The more I do this, the more I trust myself, and the closer I get to making what I imagine in my head.”

Even when the Michigan-born man released his debut solo album Queen Of Denmark in 2010, Grant laced sumptuous soft-rock ballads with an array of spacey, wistful synthesizer sounds, increasingly adding taut, fizzing sequencers, nu-synth-disco settings and icy soundscapes to the mix on 2013’s Pale Green Ghosts and 2015’s Grey Tickles, Black Pressure. Now, with his fourth solo album Love Is Magic, Grant continues to evolve, creating his most electronic record yet, in collaboration with Benge (Ben Edwards), analogue synth expert/collector and a member of electronic trio Wrangler, Grant’s collaborators earlier this year under the collective name of Creep Show on the album Mr Dynamite.

Produced by Grant (together with Benge and Paul Alexander), and engineered by Benge at his Cornish studio, the diamond-hard, diamond-gleaming Love Is Magic, “is closer still to how I’ve always wanted my records to sound, but I didn’t know how to go about it,” Grant says. Already mentioned above, he also called on bassist Paul Alexander of Denton, Texas maestros Midlake, renewing a working relationship that began on Queen Of Denmark. “Paul trained in music theory at UNT in Denton, Texas with an emphasis in Jazz and I knew he would come up with beautiful harmonies, so I unleashed him on the backing vocals,” Grant enthuses. “He comes up with interesting angles rather than the obvious and also plays some of the best bass lines I’ve ever heard.”

Besides the quest for sound, “the lyrics, of course, continue to be very important to me,” says John. “They’re just snapshots of everyday life where myriad moods and every sort of horrible and hilarious occurrence one can imagine mix with the pedestrian resulting in the absurdity and beauty of life.”

On A Wonderful Beast, his first solo album in nine years, Johnson can’t seem to shake this goofy persona, releasing of full album of left-field indie pop. Of course, as frontman for Beat Happening and especially under the moniker Dub Narcotic Sound System, Johnson often seemed tongue-in-cheek, but tracks like the spoken/sung “A Wonderful Beast” and the Lee Hazelwood-esque “Blues Come Runnin'” seem simply unfocused, rambling and without purpose.

The issue may lie with three tracks — the sticky full-sounding indie synth run-throughs of “Kiss Me Sweetly,” “Another Teardrop Falls” and “(I’ve Still Got) Sand in My Shoes” (all featuring backing vocals from Michelle Branch) — as these numbers stand as some of the best songs Johnson has recorded in his 35-year career.

But unfortunately, nothing else on the record even comes close to matching this energy and focus. A Wonderful Beast stands as a frustrating listen; a demonstration of what Calvin Johnson can do when he’s motivated and what he can do when he’s just fucking around.
