Jerusalem in My Heart – Daqa’iq Tudaiq (2018)

Jerusalem in My HeartJerusalem in My Heart is the audio-visual project of Montreal-based producer and musician Radwan Ghazi Moumneh, also known as the co-owner of the renowned Hotel2Tango recording studio where almost all of Montreal’s experimental scene has recorded. The origins of the project date back to 2005, but it was not until 2013 with the release of Mo7it Al-Mo7it that we were introduced to the hallucinatory visions of Moumneh. The project focuses on the reinterpretation and reconfiguration of Arabic folk music, exploring the aesthetics of traditional Middle-Eastern and Arabic music traditions. The band’s sophomore release If He Dies, If If If If If If saw this concept coming to full fruition, while the release with fellow experimentalists Suuns, saw Moumneh inject…

…the collaboration’s indie/noise textures with folk-inspired intersections.

Jerusalem in My Heart now returns with Daqa’iq Tudaiq, furthering their exploration of folk concepts. The new record is split into two sides, with the first displaying an expanded vision from Moumneh. Here, the artist realizes one of his dreams, in recording the classic Egyptian song “Ya Garat Al Wadi”. By assembling a 15-piece orchestra and working with the great Sam Shalabi (Land of Kush, Dwarfs of East Agouza), Moumneh rediscovers much of the magic of the track, turning into an experimental field trip. Distortion and noise join with aspects of electronic production to take the track to another level, with Moumneh also changing the title to “Wa Ta’atalat Lought Al Kalam”, which translates to “The Language of Speech Has Broke Down”, to further highlight the problems of our times.

The first side immediately showcases Moumneh’s experimental tendencies as the subtle drones and tensive ambiances come together and build an atmosphere that transitions organically into the Middle Eastern melodies. The orchestra proves to be a potent element, resulting in a fantastically rich sonic offering, as the numerous instruments meet to bring together this moment of transcendental experimental folk music under the guidance of Shalabi. There is a certain spiritual element that sprouts from many forms of traditional music, but there is something distinct about the Arabic melodies and the language that turns this track into such an opus. The progression of the tracks passes through different areas, from minimalistic parts and heavy atmospheres to moments of free-jazz spirituality and drunken rendition.

The second side of the record takes a different approach, and where the folk element was dominant in “Wa Ta’atalat Lought Al Kalam”, it is the experimental aspect that takes the lead now. “Ben Ilthnein” sees Moumneh produce a track that takes on the characteristics of the repetitive, circular progression usually found in krautrock, producing a mesmerizing offering. The buzuk and the percussion come together to lead the way through these bizarre, hazy projections while the repetitive motifs build this sonic illusion to great ends. Noise injections and synthesizers near the end of the track further highlight the hybrid existence of the project, attempting to balance between their Arabic origin and the post-rock, experimental music scope.

Still more straightforward moments exist in “Layali Al-Rast” which sees the buzuk take the lead in a solitary landscape, as Moumneh applies effects to alter its timbral characteristics while putting down multiple layers of the instrument to create a more hectic and busy soundscape. However, it is the futuristic obsession of the producer that steals the show. “Thahab, Mish Roujou’, Thahab” he uses distortion on the vocals to paint the soundscapes in brilliant, vibrant colors, performing a very subtle and elegant transformation of the Arabic music tradition.

With Daqa’iq Tudaiq Moumneh once again reveals his intricacy of coalescing the two different worlds that make the core of Jerusalem in My Heart. While the record sees him expanding that scope in the first side with the orchestral rendition of “Ya Garat Al Wadi” it does not feel like he covers too much new ground. It still results in a strong release, but it feels that there is still much more that can be uncovered. — PopMatters

Calling all jaded music-lovers. The Ragtime Rumours have come to prick up your ears. In an era when the dead-eyed music industry clings to tired formulas, these time-travelling Dutch visionaries tear up the rulebook – and that rebel attitude is all over ‘Rag ‘N Roll’.

Anything goes on this revolutionary debut album, as the ghosts of Robert Johnson and Django Reinhardt meet the influence of Tom Waits and Pokey LaFarge, driving eleven self-penned originals and one traditional that could have been written in 1920 or 2018.”We combine our inspiration for ragtime music with the styles of blues, gypsy jazz and rock ‘n’ roll,” explain the band.”We call it rag ‘n’ roll…”

Forty years after the release of one of the greatest Australian debut albums of all time – (I’m) Stranded – Ed Kuepper returns with a brand new band and a brand new contender for the title: The Aints! The Church of Simultaneous Existence.

Made up from songs, musical elements and bits and prices that Sir Ed wrote from when he began high school in 1969 and started seriously fantasising about being in a band through to the Saints implosion in 1978 and arranged by The Aints! over 2017-2018, The Church of Simultaneous Existence is an album 40 years in the making. From the glorious slash and burn of Stranded-era track SOS ’75 via the horn-driven Red Aces (the mooted follow up to 1977s classic 7″ Know Your Product) to Winters Way, recorded and released originally by the Laughing Clowns for their 1984 swan song LP Ghosts Of An Ideal Wife but written in 1975 and presented here closer to its original form.

”Things had started to move fairly quickly once The Saints recorded [I’m] Stranded (Fatal Records) in mid ’76. We recorded three albums over the next two years as well as doing a fair it of touring, and for a while things were looking very promising, however, business problems, compounded by personal and artistic differences meant the band didn’t get around to recording all the material I had lying around….so forty [very] odd years later it occurred to me that these songs might well have made up a hypothetical 4th album….The Church of the Simultaneous Existence…..the songs that refused to die….performed in much the way they would have had the band not split up in 1978″ – Ed Kuepper

David Bazan – Rare Coins: David Bazan & Sean Lane (2018)

Sometimes you find a recording artist you think is so cool, you can’t understand why more people haven’t heard of them already. You put them on all your mixtapes. You buy their record over and over again because you keep giving your personal copy away to friends. The Rare Coins Series was conceived to offer an established artist the opportunity to share one of their favorite artists with the rest of the world by way of a limited release split 12”.

As long time fans of all things in David Bazan’s orbit, 15 Passenger was overjoyed to bring him in for this inaugural Rare Coins release. And as discovering new talent is paramount to the series conceit, 15 Passenger has also become new fans of Sean Lane’s work and are honored to play a role in bringing his music to a wider audience.

David Bazan first met Sean Lane a decade ago while Sean was working at American Music in Seattle. Sean had given him an EP of a band he was playing in and Bazan was immediately struck by Sean’s percussion. A handful of years later, Sean caught Bazan’s attention again when he started recording and performing on an original instrument he built from the frame of a child’s bike; custom made bell cymbals, springs, flatwound guitar strings both plucked and bowed, and a plethora of effects pedals.

Lane has played in Perfume Genius and Yppah, and is currently on tour with Bazan in his latest incarnation of Pedro The Lion.

Lane contributes five ambient pieces that feel like a soundtrack to a mysterious, foggy night along Puget Sound. Off kilter rhythms and supernatural synths drift beneath moaning saxophones and lonely chimes. On “Invisible”, Lane lends abstract vocals to express a yearning to disappear amongst the hectic routine of daily life.

The four songs provided by Bazan are playful, provocative, and reminiscent of a leaner rock and roll style found in Bazan’s earlier work with Pedro the Lion. His signature rhythm and melody is found all over these tunes, as he handled all the instrumentation himself. These songs are awesome, amongst the finest stuff he’s ever written. “Opposite Soul” is a muscular, brooding pop song that explores the fundamental differences between “us” and “us” in today’s increasingly partisan world.

The Allman Brothers Band – Unplugged (2018)

The Allman Brothers Band featured on the penultimate episode in the very first season of MTV Unplugged, and were precisely the kind of act that producers Robert Small, Jim Burns and Jules Shear had in mind when creating the show. Taking place on the 19th of November 1990, the performance on Unplugged came just over a year into the Allmans reunion, the group having parted company in the early 80s. Reformed around guitarist Warren Haynes, from Dickey Betts solo outfit, and bassist Allen Woody, the band was enjoying something of a renaissance, brought on by both a late 80s nostalgia for the classic rock acts of the 60s and 70s as well as the chart success of their career-retrospective box-set, Dreams. In the summer of1990, the Allmans released their ninth studio album, and first for nearly a decade, Seven Turns; it confirmed that the Allman Brothers Band was back. And so the MTV performance arrived while the Allman s were riding high as a rehabilitated band touring a successful album. Performing at the National Video Center, New York City, the band re-imagined two much-loved classics from their hey day, Midnight Rider and Melissa, alongside their newest single, Seven Turns, and a nod to their acoustic blues influences with a cover of Robert Johnson s C mon In My Kitchen. It s a stunning performance, foregrounding Gregg Allman s vocal ability while also showcasing the dimension that Warren Haynes now brought to the band. Included here alongside the Unplugged set is a solo performance from Gregg Allman as part of his 1987 comeback with I m No Angel an album which set the Allman s reunion in motion. Broadcast from Auditorium Shores, Austin, Texas on May the 25th 1987 for The King Biscuit Flower Hour, the show finds Gregg in triumphant form as he essays a sizzling set of material from I m No Angel alongside Allman s standards and blues classics.
