On November 2nd, Vancouver-based alt-rock band Mother Mother is coming back with their 7th full-length studio album, Dance and Cry!
In the fall of 2017, lead singer Ryan Guldemond went through a difficult break-up, which inspired these new sounds of survival, self-reflection, sorrow and happiness.
Guldemond observes:
“This album was written from a place of wanting to be moved, and wanting to move others. At a certain point of the writing process I made a pact with myself that I wouldn’t pursue songs that didn’t either make me want to dance or cry, or ideally both. This ethos catalyzed a broader theme with regards to healing, and how feeling one’s pain and becoming truly intimate, loving and curious with it, is a crucial part of finding your way out of it.”

ΧΡΗΣΤΟΣ ΓΕΡΜΕΝΟΓΛΟΥ blue black blues με τον Ηλία Ζάικο
Ωραία CD-book έκδοση από το ΣΑΙΞΠΗΡΙΚόΝ της Θεσσαλονίκης, υπό τον τίτλο “Blue Black Blues”, που κυκλοφόρησε σε 500 αντίτυπα τον Νοέμβριο του 2017. Κλείνει χρόνος δηλαδή, αλλά κανένα πρόβλημα, εννοείται, για μας εδώ στο δισκορυχείον. Περί τίνος ακριβώς πρόκειται; Για μιαν ειδικού σκοπού συνεργασία ανάμεσα στον ντράμερ (και συγγραφέα) της jazz, του improv, του blues και του rock Χρήστο Γερμένογλου και τον επίσης γνωστό μας κιθαρίστα των Blues Wire Ηλία Ζάικο (στο ένα από τα τέσσερα tracks του CD ακούγεται και ο ηχολήπτης Τίτος Καργιωτάκης σε φωνητικό μπάσο).

Το βιβλίο, μέσα στο οποίο εσωκλείεται το δισκάκι, περιλαμβάνει τέσσερις μικρές ιστορίες του Γερμένογλου, που αναφέρονται στις τέσσερις εποχές του χρόνου (ξεκινώντας από ένα φθινόπωρο… που δεν ήρθε και καταλήγοντας στο καλοκαίρι), έτσι όπως τις βιώνει ο ήρωάς του – μια διαλυμένη φιγούρα που ζει μεταξύ φθοράς και αφθαρσίας, διατηρώντας, όμως, τις ευαισθησίες του.
Το άλμπουμ ανοίγει μ’ ένα κομμάτι 8:30 λεπτών, που φέρνει κάπως στη μνήμη τούς Black Keys και ίσως όχι αδίκως. Σε πολύ… επικοινωνιακό mood οι δύο μουσικοί, δίνουν ένα εκκωφαντικό blues-rock, που τα σπάει (όπως λέμε). Το δεύτερο 4λεπτο trackείναι ένα πιο τυπικό rhythm n’ blues (στο ύφος του Hound Dog Taylor), με τον Ζάικο στον… κλασικό ρόλο του, και με τον Γερμένογλου να «γεμίζει» με ξερά χτυπήματα (και επίσης με τον Καργιωτάκη σε μπάσο με το στόμα). Δυναμίτης κι αυτό! Ακολουθεί το τρίτο 15λεπτο track, που είναι όμως κάτι άλλο – αν υποθέσουμε πως συνδέεται με την άνοιξη, την… άνοιξη που προσπέρασε, όπως κάθε φορά που ο κύκλος της συναντάει την από πόνο ερμητικά κλειστή στο φως ψυχή σου. Και οι δύο παίκτες, εδώ, έχουν το χώρο και το χρόνο να αυτοσχεδιάσουν ελεύθεροι από συγκεκριμένους περιορισμούς, δημιουργώντας ένα ψυχεδελικής τεχνοτροπίας track, με φοβερά παιξίματα στα δύο όργανα (καλά, αυτό εννοείται), που σε παρασύρει σ’ ένα δικό του κόσμο. Μόνο και μόνο γι’ αυτή την εγγραφή τους βγάζεις το καπέλο! Απίστευτος ο Γερμένογλου με συνεχή σφυροκοπήματα και breaks, και… εκτός τόπου και χρόνου ο Ζάικος, να παίζει σόλι σε στυλ… improv-δημοτικά –απ’ αυτά που θα μπορούσε, ίσως, να έπαιζε και ο Σπάθας στο Κύτταρο το 1971-72– πριν τον «χάσεις» εντελώς (τον Ζάικο) μέσα στην… ομίχλη. Κορυφαία και πλήρης εγγραφή (δύο ανθρώπων), που πρέπει να την ακούσουν και να την… διαβάσουν οι πάντες.
Το άλμπουμ θα ολοκληρωθεί με το τελευταίο 8λεπτο track, που θα μας επαναφέρει σε μια πιο γήινη blues-rock πραγματικότητα ικανή να συντρίψει όλα τα ντραμς-κιθαριστικά duos που παρεπιδημούν τριγύρω. Και υπάρχουν πολλά απ’ αυτά δίπλα μας και μακριά μας τα τελευταία χρόνια…
Για να μαθαίνουν οι νέοι. Και να παθαίνουν οι γέροι…

Mott The Hoople – Mental Train – The Island Years 1969-71 (2018)

A superb, new 6-disc boxed set encapsulating legendary English Rock-band Mott the Hoople’s recorded output for Island Records, to whom they were signed, between 1969 and 1971. Bringing together all of their albums from the period, the set also includes bonus material plus BBC sessions and live concerts. The studio albums have all been remastered from the original tapes (where available) by renowned engineer Andy Pearce and have been complemented by bonus tracks selected by Mott the Hoople expert, Kris Needs. Disc 5 comprises more unheard and, in some cases, unreleased music from the Island archive and Disc 6 rounds everything off with live material recorded at Fairfield Hall, Croydon on 13th September 1970 plus a BBC Radio One In Concert from the Paris Theatre, London on 30th December 1971. The CDs are housed in a shoe box style package with a 50-page booklet designed by Phil Smee who scoured the archives for rare photos and memorabilia, tracing the evolution of the band. It is completed with comprehensive sleeve notes by Kris Needs.

Columbia Records/Legacy Recordings will release in November, the Bob Dylan box set that fans have really been waiting for. More Blood, More Tracks: The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 will be available as a six-CD set that includes “every surviving take” (including the complete New York sessions) from the 1974 studio recordings made by Bob Dylan which resulted in his 1975 classic Blood On The Tracks.
Described by the label as a ‘strictly limited’ deluxe set, this six-disc package features alternate versions of ‘Tangled Up In Blue’ , ‘Simple Twist Of Fate’ and ‘Shelter From The Storm’ and offers up a total of over 70 previously unreleased recordings! The 6CD deluxe of More Blood, More Tracks (there is also a 2LP vinyl and a single CD edition) includes the complete New York sessions in chronological order, including outtakes, false starts and ‘studio banter’.
The reissue producers have worked from best sources available, in most cases utilising the original multi-track session tapes. The only recordings remaining from the Minneapolis sessions are the multi-track masters of the five performances included on the finished Blood On The Tracks album, although these have been remixed and remastered for the deluxe edition.
Packaging looks to be consistent with previous Bootleg Series deluxe editions and features a hardcover book with sleeve notes by Jeff Slate, photographs, and most excitingly a complete reproduction of one of Dylan’s legendary handwritten 57 page notebooks, where you can follow the lyrical development of the songs that would eventually comprise Blood On The Tracks.
