The third album by the Christians was to be their last for a very long time (until 2003). The music on it, however, shows nothing that necessitates their demise, being a very evenly produced set of songs with familiar characteristics and quality. Moreover, the challenge of letting each of the trio write a number of songs (instead of Henry Priestman writing everything) is met with ease. The classic ’70s soul style stays intact, with Gil Scott-Heron’s song “The Bottle” providing a kind of centerpiece, complete with electric piano, flute, and echoes of wah-wah guitar. A number of session musicians provide a very even-tempered playing quality throughout the album, but maybe the smoothness of proceedings can be seen to be a drawback (specifically in comparison to the intensity and immediacy of their debut album, that had more of an ability to “grab” the listener). Dwelling on the darker aspects of society and personal life remains at the center of the Christians’ lyrical concerns, but more often than not in generalized form. Songs such as “Storms or “Slip Away” have that typical metaphoric quality, as handed down through the gospel roots of soul. However, some songs do connect a bit more clearly to distinct topics, such as “Father,” in which the genocidal conflicts as witnessed in 1992 in Yugoslavia seem to provide the backdrop. Optimism and hope do get a say, however, most pronouncedly right at the album’s start, in “What’s in a Word” (which celebrates the power of ideas that can change things for the better) and, near the end, “Still Small Voice” (meaning that inner voice of consolation that you look for in hard times). The title track, “Happy In Hell,” closes the album with a kind of summary of the Christians’ world view: having no illusions and being the happier for it — in spite of things.

Το απόγευμα άκουγα ένα άλμπουμ του Keith Tippett, του πολύ σημαντικού αυτού άγγλου πιανίστα της progressive και improv jazz και ανάμεσα στο (διπλό) εξώφυλλο βρήκα μια φωτογραφία του, που θα πρέπει να την είχα βάλει εκεί πριν από καμμιά 15αριά χρόνια – γιατί τόσα πάνω-κάτω είχα ν’ ακούσω το δίσκο. Η φωτογραφία είχε κολλήσει στο εξώφυλλο και με δυσκολία κατόρθωσα να την ξεκολλήσω, ώστε να μην καταστρέψω ή το εξώφυλλο ή τη φωτογραφία. Έχω χώσει κι άλλες φωτογραφίες μέσα σε δίσκους ή και αποκόμματα από περιοδικά κι εφημερίδες και ελπίζω να μην έχει γίνει καμμιά ζημιά – γιατί βαριέμαι τώρα να τα ψάξω.

Η φωτoγραφία τού Tippett που βλέπετε δεν είναι τυχαία. Ανήκει στον φωτογράφο της τζαζ Νίκο Χριστοδουλάκη και είναι τραβηγμένη στα τέλη του ’70 ή στις αρχές του ’80. Το λέω γιατί ο Χριστοδουλάκης σκοτώθηκε πολύ νέος, κάτω από τα 30 του, σε αυτοκινητικό, στο Βερολίνο (αν δεν κάνω κάποιο λάθος), στις αρχές των έιτις.

Κακή είδηση. Πολύ κακή. Πέθανε στα 49 του, νέο παιδί, ο άσσος τρομπετίστας της τζαζ Roy Hargrove. Αν είναι δυνατόν... Απολαύστε τον εδώ, στο μέρος του, στο "Summer night city" των ABBA, όταν τον καλεί ο Nils Landgren ν' ανεβεί στη σκηνή, την οποία και πυρπολεί.

«Αρχές ’70 ήταν της μόδας οι Chicago Transit Authority, το πρώτο και το δεύτερο διπλό άλμπουμ με τα φοβερά μανιφέστα του James Guercio. Μου τηλεφώνησε ο φίλος μου ο Θόδωρος Σαραντής και μου λέει είναι οι Chicago στην Αθήνα, θα τους κάνουμε περιήγηση μ’ ένα λεωφορείο. Πάω πράγματι εκεί και αντιμετωπίζω κάτι τεράστιους Αμερικάνους, ακριβώς όμοιους με τους τουρίστες που λυμαίνονται κάθε χρόνο τις ακτές μας. Ο Παττακός με μακριά μαλλιά. Προφανώς οι άνθρωποι είχαν σπουδάσει σε κάποια μουσική σχολή, τους έκαναν εντύπωση οι τσολιάδες και η μυζήθρα, όσο για επανάσταση –που μας έκαιγε– η μόνη επανάσταση που ξέραμε ήταν αυτή του ‘Σκοπευτηρίου’ (σ.σ. εννοεί τον Τσιτσάνη στο Χάραμα της Καισαριανής, δίπλα στο Σκοπευτήριο). Το επεισόδιο αυτό(…) μας δημιούργησε τη βεβαιότητα ότι εκτός από ορισμένα και δοκιμασμένα δικά μας πράγματα, όλα τα υπόλοιπα (με εξαίρεση δέκα ονόματα) ήταν ένα βιομηχανικό σκουπίδι της Δύσης. Οι πολυεθνικές είχαν επιβάλλει ξανά το ύφος, το στυλ και το ρυθμό τους, όποιος δε γούσταρε διεγράφετο, έτσι κι εμείς σταματήσαμε ν’ ακούμε rock και αρχίσαμε να χασκογελάμε με τα περισσότερα από τα ξένα συγκροτήματα».

Ο Τζάρβις δουλεύει σ’ ένα μουσείο σαν ξεναγός και του αρέσει, όταν δεν έχει δουλειά, να κάθεται και να κοιτάει τους αγαπημένους του πίνακες. Ειδικά έναν σκοτεινό, μ’ ένα σπίτι στο βάθος… Κάποια μέρα, ενώ κοιτάζει τον πίνακα, κάθεται δίπλα του ένας παράξενος τύπος και αρχίζει να του λέει κάτι περίεργα λόγια... για ένα φως σ' ένα από τα παράθυρα του πίνακα κ.λπ. Μετά από τα λόγια, όμως, σειρά έχουν τα έργα…

A peculiar, uneven collection of covers of songs written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, released between 1964 and 1975. Some are rare, some are not; most were recorded by the Rolling Stones, although four of the 24 tunes were never released by the group; some are good, some are indifferent, and some are awful. Most likely the grab bag was chosen according to what was available for licensing, as much as it was chosen for musical merit. At any rate, Stones collectors will find this most interesting for those four tunes the group never released, including Gene Pitney’s melodramatic 1964 ballad (and U.K. hit) “That Girl Belongs to Yesterday,” Charles Dickens’ sappy ballad “So Much in Love” (produced Beach Boys-style and actually done better by the Mighty Avengers), and the quite rare light British Invasion pop of the Greenbeats’ 1964 single “You Must Be the One.” The rarest find here is undoubtedly Teddy Green’s 1964 single “Give Me Your Hand,” boasting the highly unusual (for the 1960s) songwriting credit of Mick Jagger alone, unassisted by Keith Richards, though it’s a mediocre bluesy pop tune with an over-the-top, untuneful vocal. Other oddities are comedian Jimmy Tarbuck’s instantly forgettable mid-’60s pop single “Wastin’ Time,” although a Rolling Stones version did eventually show up on Metamorphosis, and Nicky Scott’s lush 1967 single “Backstreet Girl” (produced by Mick Jagger and Andrew Loog Oldham). As for highlights among the covers of songs familiar in versions by the Rolling Stones themselves, there’s a pretty cool funk-rock interpretation of “Gimme Shelter” from the early ’70s by obscure American soul vocalist Ruth Copeland, the Searchers’ fine folk-rock version of “Take It or Leave It,” and the Epics’ lilting 1966 take on the surprisingly oft-covered “Blue Turns to Grey.” On the other hand, there are five outings by blustery British white soul singer Chris Farlowe, and similarly unmemorable passes at Jagger-Richards compositions by P.P. Arnold, Twice as Much, and even lesser-known artists. The hard-to-find Japanese LP compilation Walkin’ Thru the Sleepy City, by the way, collates thirteen 1960s Rolling Stones covers — largely of songs the Stones did not release in the 1960s — that do not appear on Let’s Go Get Stoned, and might well be of greater interest to dedicated Stones fans.

Tallawit Timbouctou are champions of takamba, a hypnotic traditional music from Northern Mali. Built around the tehardent, the four-stringed lute and pre-cursor to the American banjo, takamba’s droning distortion comes from signature handmade mics and blown out amplifiers. Accompanied by percussion pounded out onto an overturned calabash with mind boggling time signatures, the combined effect is trance inducing.

This is the music that long ruled the North of Mali, performed at festivities, blasting out of dusty boomboxes, and beaming out from village radio stations. Its origin is shrouded in mystery, and though purportedly dating back to the Songhai Empire of the 15th century, takamba’s heyday was in the 1980s, with the introduction of amplification. Musicians found a lucrative circuit, performing in elegant weddings, creating cassettes on demand, and writing songs for their wealthy patrons. Today takamba has fallen out of popular fashion with the youth but continues to thrive in a small network of die-hard traditionalists.

Band leader Aghaly Ag Amoumine is one of the remaining renowned takamba musicians. Descended from a long line of praise singers, he spent decades traveling across the Sahel, performing in remote nomad camps and crowded West African capitals. His compositions continue to circulate today and have become part of the folk repertoire. His group Tallawit Timbouctou, based in the city of the same name, continues in the family tradition and has featured both his brother and nephew as accompanying members.

Recorded at home in Timbouctou, “Hali Diallo” is a relentless and non-stop recording, true to the form of takamba. Tracks blend seamlessly into one another, instruments are tuned mid-song, and Aghaly only pauses singing long enough for the occasional shout-out or dedication. Unfiltered and direct, as it’s meant to be heard, Tallawit Timbouctou is a shining example of one of the last great takamba bands.
