John Medeski’s Mad Skillet will issue their self-titled debut album through Medeski Martin & Wood’s Indirecto Records imprint on November 9. Keyboardist John Medeski, guitarist Will Bernard, drummer Terence Higgins and sousaphone master Kirk Joseph shared the LP’s first single, “Invincible Bubble.”
The band originally came together for a late-night gig during the 2015 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. “Something happens there. There’s something in the air, the water, the food,” said Medeski of the Crescent City. “Every time we play, it really is magical. We get together and this thing lifts. It has a life of its own, beyond any of us. There’s a lot of ESP in New Orleans music. There’s a certain feel that New Orleans guys have that you can’t get anywhere else.”
John Medeski’s Mad Skillet recorded the nine-track album at the Living Room, a studio housed in a Depression-era church just across the Mississippi from NOLA. The keyboardist tapped longtime friend and collaborator Scotty Hard to help with production. Bernard and Joseph each contributed songs to the album, while a pair of tunes are spontaneous group compositions. There’s also a cover of Sun Ra’s “The Golden Lady” in addition to a number of tracks penned by Medeski.

Singer/songwriter Rosie Thomas has been shaping her sweet, delicate song stylings since her early childhood, but she made a name for herself when she joined Motor City dream pop band Velour 100. Thomas sang and toured with the band during the late ’90s before jumping ship for a solo career. Mixing up the folk-pop of Joni Mitchell with indie sensibilities, Thomas found herself surrounded by a new scene. She and Damien Jurado dueted on “Wages of Sin” for Sub-Pop’s 2001 compilation Badlands: A Tribute to Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska as well as guested on “Parking Lot” on Jurado’s Ghost of David. Thomas, however, introduced something more reflective, humorous, and intriguing on her solo debut, When We Were Small (Sub-Pop), in early 2002. When she’s not making music, Thomas’ comedic alter ego, a bespectacled pizza delivery girl who she’s named Sheila, may also appear. Her winning streak continued in late 2003 with the release of her second full-length release, Only with Laughter Can You Win. If Songs Could Be Held followed in 2005. Thomas’ song “Faith’s Silver Elephant” was included on a compilation disc put together by Toronto’s Paper Bag Records the following year. 2006 was also the year that Pitchfork made the dubious claim that Thomas and fellow musician Sufjan Stevens were expecting a child. Thomas later dispelled the claim, citing that it had been meant as an April Fools’ Day joke. ~ MacKenzie Wilson

dan de winnaar zijn, de meeste reacties komen nog altijd op muziek
uit Congo. Veel bezoekers hadden Congo hoger in de utslagen gehoopt
of verwacht. Vandaag weer eens een elpee in dat genre. In de categorie
Congo vinden we veel platen van zangers, bands maar eigenlijk nauwelijks
vrouwelijke artiesten. Ongetwijfeld zijn er naast Mbilia Bel nog wel andere
dames die mooie platen hebben gemaakt. We hebben Franco met Nana en
Baniel, die is mooi. Van Abeti en M’Pongo Love zijn er vast mooie platen
maar ik moet ze nog ontdekken. Onder de bezielende leiding van Tabu Ley
maakte Mbilia Bel een reeks pracht platen, waaronder deze ‘Beyanga’ uit
1987. Op het Genidia label en met Orchestre Afrisa..
In our top twenty of most downloaded albums Colombia may be the one
best represented, however the music from Congo is still the category that
gets the most reactions. Many visitors had hoped or expected Congo to end
up higher in the list so today another record from Congo. If we look in this
category we find lots of band and singers but hardly any female artists. No
doubt there are a lot of great female singers from Congo but part from
Mbilia Bel, Nana and Baniel who performed with Franco, we have not got
much. Abeti and M’Pongo Love must have made good albums But I am
yet to discover them. Under the inspirational guidance of Tabu Ley, Mbilia
Bel made a bunch of great records of which this 1987 ‘Beyanga’.

Folkies flit between outfits almost as much as jazzers. Emily Portman, Alasdair Roberts, Rachel Newton and Lucy Farrell all have their own groups and albums, becoming the Furrow Collective to concentrate on tradition rather than original compositions. Most of the dozen songs on this third album are well known – in the case of The Cruel Grave and the Dark-Eyed Gypsies one might say overexposed – but the group refresh them with a mixture of agile arrangements and close-knit harmonies.
Though the quartet take turns to sing lead, it’s their blended vocals that strike home. Davy Lowston, a true tale of abandoned mariners, uses only harmonium and voices. Our Ship She’s Ready, a poignant story of emigration, likewise has a solitary guitar backing. When they do pick up their instruments – violin, harp, banjo, squeezebox and more – the collective stay restrained. The Cruel Grave comes with eerie electroharp; otherwise the group are content with cadent, spangled backdrops. There’s little of the ebullience that lifted 2016’s Wild Hog, but Fathoms has its own charms, and once again comes expertly produced by label boss Andy Bell. Chalk one up for tradition.
