A Box of Stars emerged from the Green Mountain College arts community — or, as the folk band refers to its home turf, “western Vermont.” The Poultney campus looks like a movie set, surrounded by mountains and nestled against the New York State border. I can’t shake the feeling that view had a profound effect on the group’s debut EP, Days Drunk Off Heat.

As subgenre buzzwords go, “dream folk” is refreshingly transparent. It sounds just like you’d expect: haunting, unabashedly pretty and drenched in sweet, sweet reverb. Musically, the band centers on the interplay of vocalists Claire Londagin and Macaulay Lerman, who previously worked together in the folk band Ava Marie. (Lerman also plays guitar in “doom sludge” outfit Mine Is a Black Mouth.)

Album opener “Cornfields” is a low-key reverie that starts with nothing but guitar and vocals, gradually unveiling the dynamic range of this young band. From the hypnotic percussion of the middle movement to the crashing waves of the outro, it’s a long, delightful ride. It also introduces Jens Hyberston’s gorgeous violin work — his spare touch is the band’s secret weapon.

The EP’s tone opens up into straightforward pop rock on the second track, “Sunshivers.” Behind Tim Halteman’s skittering drum break, the band delivers a wistful, soaring college-radio hit. It’s solid but also perhaps the least interesting song on the album.

The group really etches out its manifesto on the EP’s middle stretch. “Tongue Tied” is a dark, beautiful song rendered in slow motion. “Migratory Birds” sounds like it was recorded underwater. That’s a compliment: The laid-back waltz sounds like a dub remix of the Cowboy Junkies. The triptych ends with “Virgins,” a perfect, timeless slice of melancholia.

With a sound carved from weird noises and effects pedals, A Box of Stars is most impressive for its authors’ restraint. From a roar to a whisper, every choice on this album serves the songs; it’s a confident, carefully honed set. Recorded at Woodridge, N.Y., retreat/studio the Outlier Inn with veteran engineer Josh Druckman, the EP’s sound quality is exquisite.

The project also illustrates that the band has more horizons to explore. On “The Leaving,” vocalist Londagin steps out on her own and … well, that should happen more often. She’s a gifted stylist, and her ghostly tone perfectly suits this band. Closing cut “Static Companion” is a rock workout that balances the pop songwriting of “Sunshivers” with the more cinematic approach that defines the rest of the EP.

A Box of Stars are an unusually mature young band with a real gift for making their songs breathe. Days Drunk Off Heat is a promising project, an EP that makes an album-size statement.

Chucho ValdesWith Jazz Bata 2, composer, pianist and bandleader Chucho Valdes finally follows up on an experimental album he cut in Cuba in 1972. The subject matter of both records is the folklore and religious beliefs of the Yoruba slaves shipped to the Caribbean between 1770 and 1840.
On Jazz Bata 2 Valdés’ piano is backed by Dreiser Darruthy Bombale, playing various batá, double-headed drums shaped like hourglasses with one end larger than the other, used in Yoruba religious rituals. The album opens with “Obatala,” which Valdés describes as a mini-suite dedicated to the Yoruba god of wisdom and justice. Valdés says, “Yelsy Heredia’s bowed-bass solo has a spiritual dimension, played as if calling the ancestors.” Yelsy and Bombale both hail from…

…the Guantánamo region of Cuba. They grew up together, went through music school together, graduated together, and have been playing music side-by-side ever since.

“Son XXI” is a peculiar mixture. It starts with a section Valdés calls “half Cecil Taylor, half Muhal Richard Abrams.” This leads into a composition by the late Cuban composer Enrique Ubieta, which Valdés first performed in 1963. “Luces” (Lights), on the other hand, was composed only two weeks before the recording session. It lays claim to being the first-ever bolero to be played with congas and batá.

“Ochun” is a Yoruba deity representing feminine beauty and patron saint of the Osun River in Nigeria. Because of her love of sweet music, Valdés recruited Regina Carter to serenade the goddess on violin—a refreshing change of instrumentation. “Chucho’s Mood” grew out of a Cuban jam session, or descarga. It contains an amusing quote from Billy Strayhorn’s “Take The A-Train.”

Valdés pays tribute to his father, Ramón “Bebo” Valdés, a towering figure in Cuban music, celebrating his centenary, with “100 Anos De Bebo” (100 Years Of Bebo). The song, largely written by Bebo, is played by Regina Carter. Valdés Junior says of it, “No one’s heard this tune. I’m the only person who knows it. When I was a child, Bebo played it on the piano at home. Just a tune, very beautiful, and as many times as he played it, it always captured my attention.”

Personnel: Chucho Valdés: piano; Yelsy Heredia: bass; Dreiser Darruthy Bombale: batas; Yaroldy Abreu Robles: percussion; Regina Carter: violin.

180g Vinyl LP Pressed at RTI!
Remastered by Kevin Gray From Original Tapes!
1972 Solo Debut From Iconic Singer-Songwriter!

Iconic songwriter’s solo debut — now back on vinyl!

Contains original version of the Eagles’ “How Long”

Before he was co-writing #1 Eagles hits like “Best Of My Love”, “New Kid In Town” and “Heartache Tonight” with Glenn Frey and Don Henley, JD Souther formed Longbranch/Pennywhistle with Frey when they were roommates. Their downstairs neighbor was a fellow by the name of Jackson Browne, who took Souther to audition for his boss, David Geffen, who had recently formed the Asylum Records label. After hearing two songs, Geffen told Souther to “go make a record.” And, that’s exactly what he did.

John David Souther arrived in 1971, and was immediately a critical success and established Souther as a, if not ‘the’, songwriter to watch. (He would later be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame 42 years later. . .)

Co-produced by Souther and Fred Catero (who had recently finished Santana’s Abraxas), John David Souther featured 10 originals—all stunning, and many of which would be covered by artists like Bonnie Raitt (“Run Like A Thief”) and his old friends the Eagles, who released “How Long” as the first single from their 2007 comeback and multiplatinum smash, Long Road Out Of Eden.

John David Souther was, and is, the perfect introduction to the singer and performer behind the songs. Still relevant over 4 decades later, John David Souther shows the emergence of one of music’s most influential artists.

Death Breath - Stinking Up the Night (2006)

Death Breath is a Swedish death metal band, featuring Robert Pehrsson (Thunder Express/Dundertaget) and Nicke Andersson formerly of the death metal band Entombed, who wanted to return to playing drums and death metal. The members of the band both have other bands but does not consider Death Breath to be a side project. The band was formed in 2005 and was originally intended to be named Black Breath but to the band?s surprise the name Death Breath had never been used by a metalband. The band consider their music to be pure death metal, free from seven string guitars, five string basses and triggered drums. The bands music is influenced by Slayer, Venom and Black Sabbath, Autopsy, Celtic Frost as well as old horror movies and HP Lovecraft.

Way back in 2008 we had one album from Curaçao, one of
the Dutch Antilles. Today the second here at the GG. Macario
Prudencia comes in with this strong piece of I don’t know how
to call it. When I found it they told me it is salsa but I don’t think
this is the right description for this type of music. What ever the
proper name is, it sounds wonderful. Happy dancing tunes..
