Solo Flights is the thirty-sixth studio album by Chet Atkins. Side one of this album features Atkins’ experiment with the “Octabass Guitar,” where he replaced the two low strings (the E and A strings) with heavier strings in order to drop an octave and create a fuller sound with bass.

“Though incredibly busy running RCA Victor’s Nashville operation, Chet Atkins still found some time and enterprise to perform some musical experiments on his own. It was a simple idea, really, replacing the two lower strings on his electric guitar with the E and A strings from an electric bass, thus lowering the tone by an octave and creating a fuller balance. With this idea, Atkins’ disarmingly easygoing fingerpicking facility threatened to put every bass player in Nashville out of business, but the so-called “Octabass Guitar” evidently wasn’t pursued much further. Indeed, only on side one of this LP do listeners hear the new instrument on a series of mostly jazz and pop standards — including the newly minted Joe Zawinul soul/jazz vehicle “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.” The bass strings give the tracks a different sound, but since one man is playing two parts in the same unified manner style, listeners will not really perceive the illusion of a genuine guitar/bass duet. The side also contains a polished remake of “Chet’s Tune,” the song on which just about every artist on RCA Victor’s Nashville roster had pitched in on to surprise their label boss earlier that year. Side two is simplicity itself; delicate, lovingly caressed solo acoustic guitar tracks with only an occasional celesta or hi-hat cymbal set in the background. Give “Gonna Get Along Without You Now” the most points for likeability on this low-key side. All told, this is one of Atkins’ more pleasing collections from that era.” (Richard S. Ginell, AMG)

Although best known for the AOR and radio hits from the early 1980s (which included the number ones ‘Keep On Loving You’ and ‘Can’t Fight This Feeling’), R.E.O. Speedwagon’s long history goes way back to their formation in Champaign, Illinois in 1967. Initially a covers band playing bars and fraternity houses, the initial line-up of Neal Doughty on keyboards, Alan Gratzer on drums and vocals, Joe Matt on guitar and vocals and Mike Blair on bass and vocals, named themselves after the R.E.O. Speed Wagon, a model of American flat-bed truck. By the time they came to record their debut LP for Epic Records in 1971, the line- up had settled around Terry Luttrell on lead vocals, driving force Gary Richrath on guitar and Gregg Philbin on bass, joining Neal Doughty and Alan Gratzer.

Although guitarist Gary Richrath has long been an important and influential figure in the songwriting and musical direction of the band, by the release of second LP, “R.E.O./T.W.O.”, the band were joined by Kevin Cronin on lead vocals. His tenure with R.E.O. was cut short when he was replaced on lead vocals by Mike Murphy for 1973’s “Ridin’ The Storm Out”, 1974’s “Lost In A Dream” and 1975’s “This Time We Mean It”, the latter co-produced by future Eagles producer, Bill Szymczyk. By 1976’s “R•E•O”, Kevin Cronin had returned to the fold, making a significant contribution to the songwriting alongside Gary Richrath. Produced by John Stronach, “R•E•O” would also be the last studio LP to feature Gregg Philbin on bass, who’d be replaced by Bruce Hall following 1977’s double concert album “LIVE (YOU GET WHAT YOU PLAY FOR)”. Going platinum the following year, whilst making a healthy dent on the Billboard Hot 100, it was recorded at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, the Convention Center, Indianapolis, Indiana, Kiel Auditorium, Saint Louis, Missouri and the Electric Ballroom in Atlanta, Georgia.

As well as extensive liner notes from Malcolm Dome, this expansive 8 disc set features a wealth of bonus tracks; self-titled debut album CD1: “R.E.O. SPEEDWAGON” [1971] features “mono single” versions of ‘157 Riverside Avenue’, ‘Lay Me Down’ and ‘Sophisticated Lady’. CD2: “R.E.O. T.W.O.” [1972] features a “mono single” cover of Chuck Berry’s ‘Little Queenie’. CD3: “RIDIN’ THE STORM OUT” [1973] features bonus “mono single” versions of ‘Ridin’ The Storm Out’, ‘Open Up’ plus ‘Ridin’ The Storm Out’ and ‘Son Of A Poor Man’ featuring Kevin Cronin on vocals. CD4: “LOST IN A DREAM” [1974] features a “mono single” version ‘Throw The Chains Away’. CD5: “THIS TIME WE MEAN IT” [1975] features “mono single” versions of ‘Reelin’’ and ‘Out Of Control’. CD6: “R•E•O” [1976] “mono single” version of ‘Keep Pushin’’ plus a live take of the same song. CD7 & CD 8: “LIVE (YOU GET WHAT YOU PLAY FOR)” [1977] finishes off this collection, and restores the record to its original full length double album by including both ‘Gary’s Guitar Solo’ and ‘Little Queenie’, which were omitted from the original single CD release due to time constraints.

Working with Dire Straits guitarist Mark Knopfler had a rejuvinating influence on Chet Atkins. Knopfler has Atkins moving toward his country roots, but both guitarists still play with a tasteful, jazzy sensibility — however, Atkins has abandoned the overt jazz fusion pretensions that sank most of his ’80s records. With its direct, understated approach, Neck and Neck is the most focused and arguably the most rewarding record Atkins has released.

Deena AbdelwahedDeena Abdelwahed is a radical musician with a noble cause. She uses her music to rally against social injustices like gender inequality and homophobia, which comes through in both her lyrics and her at times confrontational club sound. By combining modern club sounds with synthesised Arabic instrumentation and lyrics sung mostly in Tunisian Arabic, Abdelwahed’s debut album, Khonnar, critiques both Arab society and the way it is perceived.
In an interview for the Wire, Abdelwahed explained the meaning behind some of the songs on Khonnar. “Al Hobb Al Mouharreb,” meaning love as refuge, concerns the migrant crisis and intercultural partnerships for the sake of asylum. “Rabbouni” speaks out against societal control and…

…the taming of generations. “Saratan,” about gender inequality, and “Fdhiha,” a song in defence of the young, showcase a range of vocal effects, from ethereal smears to high-pitched ululations. By transforming her voice into many, you could say she embodies the marginalised communities and people she defends with her work.

Abdelwahed’s conceptual approach is present in Khonnar‘s instrumentals, too. Take “Tawa,” which merges an Arabic melody with non-traditional rhythms––”an attempt to do a dancey ballroom track,” as Abdelwahed recently described it. It’s an ironic play of preconceptions, she’s said, “because that opening melody is what you expect from an Arab musician but the rest of the song has nothing to do with being proud of Arab culture.” This thoughtful approach is typical of Khonnar.

However unusual it sounds, the LP makes you want to dance. “A Scream In The Consciousness” is the exception, a challenging, arrhythmic track, composed mostly of bleeps and pulses, that was made during a ten-day residency at Stockholm’s EMS Studios. Abdelwahed’s voice comes through not in a scream, but in a low, unrelenting moan. It’s this kind of symbolism that makes Khonnar both a political statement and a daring piece of art.
