Digitally remastered edition of the Genesis keyboardist’s 1979 album. A Curious Feeling was inspired by the novel Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. Recorded at Polar Studios in Stockholm, whilst Genesis were on a brief hiatus following the And Then There Were Three tour, this majestic work featured contributions from drummer Chester Thompson (a member of Genesis for concert appearances) and vocalist Kim Beacon. Stylistically the album is equal to anything Banks composed for Genesis and includes the instrumental ‘The Waters of Lethe’ and the single ‘For a While’ among it’s highlights.

The Coasters were one of the vocal groups of the 50s and early 60s who bridged the gap between the doowop and R&B eras of the early 50s through to the rock n roll explosion and beyond, with a run of hits that extended into the 1960s. They began life as a spin-off from the doowop group The Robins, adopted by the up-and-coming songwriting and production team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller as a vehicle for their work, changing their name after their first hit from The Robins to The Coasters as they switched from Leiber & Stollers Spark label to the Atlantic subsidiary Atco when the duo signed a production deal with the label. This great-value 56-track 2-CD set comprises all their A &B sides as The Robins and The Coasters from their Spark debut in 1954 through to 1962, plus, as a bonus, the two titles which appeared on their albums during the period and were not otherwise released on singles. It naturally features their eighteen chart entries from the period, including the legendary US and UK hits Searchin, Yakety Yak, Charlie Brown and Poison Ivy, plus other memorable US successes like Smokey Joes Café, Down In Mexico, Youngblood, Hog For You Baby, Along Came Jones and Little Egypt. Its not only a hugely entertaining slice of R&B-flavoured rock n roll, with hits that were landmarks along the rite of passage for many baby-boomers, but a testimony to the songwriting and production genius of Leiber and Stoller, their humorous street saga songs providing the biggest of the groups hits.

Ever since Frenchmen Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel witnessed a Javanese gamelan performance at the Paris international exposition of 1889, Westerners have been enthralled by the luminous, otherworldly tones of Indonesian music. There’s a through-line from that first cultural exchange to modern electronic music, from Steve Reich’s Music For 18 Musicians to Autechre, Four Tet and Aphex Twin. And so it would have been easy for George Thompson to just trade on that precedent when he traveled to Bali to record some sounds in the field, adding some electronics to those kettle gongs and hammered gangsa and calling it a day.
For his first full-length (and the inaugural release on Island of The Gods for their series of albums recorded in Bali, from the likes of…
…Tim Goldsworthy and Young Marco), it’s to Black Merlin’s credit that rather than present the expected sounds of Indonesia, he’s gone deeper on Hipnotik Tradisi. That telltale pulse of gamelan doesn’t even make its first appearance until midway through “Somewhere in Ubud,” where it’s followed by a snatch of laughter before the track veers back into black, the gongs entwined with eerie throat singing. That froggy sound comes back as the hook for “Reef Play,” perhaps the album’s most club-friendly moment.
Like moving about in any sweltering clime, Black Merlin is judicious with his pacing, each sound creeping along slowly so the organic and electronic textures have time to blend together. For the most part, Thompson favors sounds that replicate the thick humid atmosphere of Bali: the rustling of leaves, the percussion of falling rain, distant waves, passing motorbikes. “Surrounded Peace” is built from such sounds, but it’s an uneasy peace, with Thompson adding a menacing throb underneath such small sounds, as if the jungle’s breathing at midnight. “Sepeda Kumbang” perhaps comes closest to replicating gamelan, or else suggests techno pitched to a crawl. When the pulse speeds up on a track like “Time in Motion,” it’s increasingly hard to distinguish between the metallic tone of crickets and the chirp of Thompson’s processed percussion.
In Hipnotik Tradisi‘s arc, the pacing and attention to detail evokes Voices from the Lake, as rendered by Demdike Stare. And it speaks to Black Merlin opting for a rougher path, rather than just making an album that dabbles in “tropical” sounds (which are currently infiltrating pop and dance music). A glowering highlight like “Layang-Layang”—wherein bass rumbles, bowed cymbals and the most menacing bird call melt together—is downright bone-chilling, even in the heavy heat of the jungle.

Maria Taylor’s career runs through four albums with the band Azure Ray, a bunch of EPs and singles, and six full-length solo records, the latest of which she’s releasing herself. She’s also relatively newly married with two young children, so she’s bound to be in a reflective state of mind. To process it all, she’s made perhaps her warmest and most affecting album, In The Next Life, and filled it with gorgeous, touching songs about family, legacy, fear and the pursuit of contentment.
Several song titles hint at the joys she’s already found — “A Good Life,” “Home,” “There’s Only Now” — but Taylor’s songwriting retains her gift for capturing both light and shadows. In “It Will Find Me,” she ponders hanging up her guitar as responsibilities encroach, but the title also implies that our impulses and dreams have ways of coming back around even as life drowns them out. Elsewhere, the swoonily propulsive “If Only” looks at devotion and hope through the prism of second chances — even if they take place “in the next life.”
Throughout these 10 bittersweet songs, Taylor draws support from familiar friends and collaborators, including Joshua Radin, Nik Freitas, Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst and others. Together, they help Taylor sum up the best of where her life and music have taken her. Here’s hoping she never follows through on that threat to hang up her guitar, because she’s got way too many more chapters left to write.
