This album sounds so much like it was made sometime in the late sixties/early seventies that there’s a kind of time capsule feel to it; a little glimpse into a forgotten world. You can almost see Marla & David Celia sitting in a coffee shop discussing their latest gigs with Arlo Guthrie while they wait for Joni Mitchell to come and join them! ‘Daydreamers’ is an album that invokes the Hippy spirit. This is Laurel Canyon folk music dressed up for the 21st century – a sound infused with nostalgia for simpler times. “
Marla and David Celia are now recording together after years of touring and recording solo albums. A firm favourite at festivals and gigs all over Europe as well as in Canada, where David originates from and where the couple are now based, this album reflects their love of travelling as well as their obvious affection for each other.
The first thing to say about the songs on this album is how well the two voices work together. It’s always an absolute pleasure to hear good harmony vocal work and this duo have clearly worked on their harmonies, but their voices also seem to have a natural affinity that makes them blend so seamlessly and produce such a beautiful sound. Sadly their solo voices are nowhere near as impressive, though both their voices are decent enough; there’s just something about the voices combined that is so much greater than the individual components. Marla probably has the more interesting voice of the two, seemingly having more range and texture. Her voice shows particularly well on the track ‘Warming Words’. David’s voice is strong and clear but seems to lack a certain tonal quality as a solo instrument – but when the harmony sound is this strong the individual voices are so much less important.
The album starts particularly strongly with album opener ‘Carry It On’, supposedly inspired by Pete Seeger’s collection of songbooks under the same name. It’s a great track that shows off their voices beautifully as well as boasting some fine guitar work. Lyrically we’re in decidedly hippy country – “Open your window and breathe in the air/There’s not much to separate you from out there/We are all strangers and family too/Dreaming in circles, under the moon” – but it does give you an early indication of where the album is heading. There are some good songs here – the nicely laid back ‘Heart Like a Dove’, the jaunty ‘Brave New Land’ that’s very reminiscent of The Mavericks with its strong Latin feel and ‘I Am Her Man’ which builds nicely as a track and offers some good slide guitar from David Celia, who really is a very fine player.
The downside of this album is that there’s also a fair sprinkling of rather ordinary, slightly plodding tracks and the whole album soon starts to feel not just folky but decidedly folksy and more than a little twee in places. Lyrics like, “It turns me on to fantasize a life with you/We can make babies, buy a house with a Mountain View” (‘Lover of Mine’) may be sweet but it all gets a bit cloying after a while. Great harmony vocals, great guitar playing, some good songs but the album as a whole is too whimsical and lacking in substance.

Both collections open with a new version of Clutching At Straws that was remixed earlier this year by Andy Bradfield and Avril Mackintosh. Both sets also include a concert recording of Marillon performing in Scotland at the Edinburgh Playhouse in December 1987 during the group’s final tour of Fish-era. It was mixed by Michael Hunter.
Some of the performances first appeared in 1988 on the live album, The Thieving Magpie. In concert, the band plays songs that span its entire career up to that point with “Garden Party” from its 1983 debut Script for a Jester’s Tear; “Punch And Judy” from Fugazi (1984); “Kayleigh” from Misplaced Childhood (1985); and “Warm Wet Circles” from Clutching at Straws.
The third disc in the CD-version of CLUTCHING AT STRAWS: DELUXE EDITION brings together nine demo recordings released in 1999 with four unreleased demos for “Hotel Hobbies/Warm Wet Circles,” “Just For The Record,” “Torch Song” and “Slàinte Mhath.”

Ed Harcourt has released seven albums of singer-songwriter music, ranging in intensity and mood since his debut in 2001, Here Be Monsters. This time, he has released an entirely instrumental album of mainly piano-based compositions.
He conjures up a wistful, autumnal mood on the likes of Diving Bell and Wolves Change Rivers, with strings joining the plaintive piano chords. Stately melodies abound on Duet For Ghosts and Keep Us Ghosts, almost begging to be used in a soundtrack. Two tracks, For My Father and Far My Mother are almost companion pieces and are unremittingly lovely. The brief, vaguely electronic Faded Photographs is wintrier than most of the rest but equally easy on the ear.
If there is a criticism, it’s that the album is a little one-paced and lacks a standout, which can cause your attention to wander off. But a perfectly relaxed pace at that, ideal for contemplative moments.

By emerging in the mid-2000s, Art Brut were largely spurned by the British rock press at a time when inferior landfill bands were being heralded as frickin’ geniuses.
Instead, their riff-heavy sound and singer Eddie Argos’s sardonic delivery – so perfectly distilled on phenomenal first record, Bang, Bang, Rock and Roll – soaked up plenty of blogger love at a time when music blogs’ influence was peaking.
So how do the band sound in 2018? Wham! Bang! Pow! Let’s Rock Out!, their first album in seven years, doesn’t just echo the title of the group’s debut’s, it sticks to the original Art Brut blueprint.

Roine Stolt, known as the guitarist, singer, writer and at times band leader of the groups The Flower Kings, Transatlantic, Agents of Mercy, Kaipa DC, as well as from his work with prog icon Jon Anderson and the new super-group The Sea Within, is releasing a new album on the 23rd November 2018. Under the moniker ROINE STOLT’S THE FLOWER KING, ’Manifesto Of An Alchemist’ offers 10 songs and almost 70 minutes of playing time celebrating the style Roine is most revered for: progressive rock, richly orchestrated with all the trademark elements from four decades of the genre.
Roine comments: “Unlike many later albums, where recordings have continued over months, this new album has been a fairly quick and effective affair – we started tracking in Holland at the beginning of July and mix was done by mid-August! The songs are written in a very ‘unorthodox’ way – some melodic content and some riffs are ideas that have been circulating for years – some may even be from before the first TFK album – they just hadn’t found a home in any of the bands/albums I did in the last 15 years yet.”
‘Manifesto Of An Alchemist’ is a celebration of all the styles that have been part of the colourful, daring and dynamic songwriting and arrangements that Roine masters like no other, yet also offers a more immediate, more hands on approach. “Like that first TFK album, I’m the main lead vocalist here again – it works as these lyrics are important to me and resonate with my view of the world. A lot of the guitar work is actually my spontaneous ‘demo’ guitars and that goes for much of the synth work, too. I didn’t want to ‘process’ ideas too much as there is much power in the initial creation – I wanted to keep it that way.”
The album features a host of other musicians, including long-time collaborators Jones Reingold, Hans Froberg & Michael Stolt, as well as fellow The Sea Within member Marco Minnemann, Max Lorentz, Zach Kamins, Rob Townsend & Nad Sylvan.
