With album sales now topping one and a half million and two Grammy nominations to date, Afro Celt Sound System celebrated their 20th Anniversary in 2016 with an acclaimed album, The Source, fRoots Magazine described it as ‘a colossus of an album’ Folk Radio UK had it as a Featured Album of the Month. Describing it as “captivating and energetic” in his Folk Radio album review, Neil McFadyen also enthused “It’s an album that packs just as many surprises as that inspired and eclectic beginning twenty years ago, and sees Simon Emmerson unite Afro Celts regulars with artists from those first Real World sessions, and some of the most creative figures from the ever-changing face of tradition-based music in the UK.”
ECC Records are now delighted to announce the release of ‘Flight‘, the 8th studio album by this ground-breaking collective. ‘Flight’, released on 23rd November 2018, will be supported by a major 10 day UK wide tour (November 2018, including London’s Barbican Centre on 21st) and will explore themes of migration – both human and avian – with a dazzling cast of stellar musicians from around the globe.
Afro Celt Sound System have invited three other large collectives to join them on this album and by doing so, shine a spotlight on migration, with a particular focus on refugees. These include the Amani Choir whose music director Emmanuela Yogolelo came to England from the Democratic Republic of Congo and has a refugee background. The album also features Stone Flowers, the band supported by Music Action International, a charity who helps transform lives affected by war, torture & armed conflict through music and song, alongside the Johannesburg based African Gospel Singers.
The album also references the environment and is in part inspired by ECC Records owner’s Simon Emmerson and Mark Constantine’s shared passion for bird-watching. ‘Flight’ is perhaps Afro Celt Sound System’s most overtly political album and draws from Armagh-born vocalist and flautist Ríoghnach Connolly and Emmanuela’s work within the refugee community of Manchester and across the north west of England.

Remastered BBC session recordings of the legendary Super Furry Animals, covering their emergence in 1996 to the period of major label excess of the early noughties, are being released by the band in remastered form across a deluxe vinyl box set. Courtesy of Strangetown Records and released on Fri 23 November 2018, Super Furry Animals at the BBC covers eight rare sessions recorded especially for BBC Radio One, including one non-broadcast and unreleased song.
In an ongoing period of archival and re-evaluation, the Furries have worked side-by-side with the band’s curatorial collaborator, Kliph Scurlock and mastering maestro, Donal Whelan to restore recordings made for John Peel, Mark Radcliffe and Steve Lamacq and Jo Whiley’s Evening Session to pristine condition. In a collection beginning prior to the release of their debut album, Fuzzy Logic, the band’s adventures at the BBC open on April Fools’ Day 1996 with a visit to the, now demolished BBC Manchester studios for Radcliffe and Marc Riley’s Radio One ‘Graveyard Shift’, returning to London and the legendary Maida Vale studios just ten days later for their debut Evening Session recording. Their adventures continued to include three encounters with the late John Peel, including one session at his Peel Acres home in July 2001.
“We got to see some of his records,” Gruff Rhys explains in the accompanying text, telling Pinnock: “I think he’d had new foundations put in because the records were so heavy – he had thousands and thousands and thousands.” Drummer, Daf Ieuan recalled: “I remember Peel saying they had a swimming pool and it was named after whatever voiceover he’d done to get the money, something like the Twix Swimming Pool.”
The BBC sessions were performed in support of the releases of their first album and follow ups Radiator, Guerilla, Mwng and Rings Around the World with rare live versions, alternative takes and faithfully-performed favourites from each included in the collection.

With a sudden resurgence of ’80s new wave from both revivalist acts (the Killers, Interpol) and reunions of the old guard (Duran Duran), the time was certainly right for other veteran acts to “get back in the ring,” so to speak. And Simple Minds did just that, with the release of 2005’s Black and White. Founding members Jim Kerr (vocals) and Charlie Burchill (guitar) are back once more, with an album that manages to incorporate both elements of their earlier, best-known work (such as 1985’s Once Upon a Time), as well as modern sounds. That said, Kerr and Burchill wisely don’t stray too far away from their identifiable sound (à la U2’s post-Joshua Tree work). This is no more evident than in the track “Different World,” which doesn’t sound too far off from a more polished Dandy Warhols composition, or the soaring album opener, “Stay Visible.” A major factor in the group’s creative rebirth can be attributed to the input of Bob Clearmountain, who previously worked with the band on its aforementioned 1985 album. Maybe something there’s something good about all this ’80s nostalgia inspiration for older acts to issue surprisingly strong albums, as evidenced by Black and White.

The Skiffle Players—the band composed of Neal Casal, Dan Horne, Cass McCombs, Farmer Dave Sher, and Aaron Sperske—have announced that a new album. Skiff arrives October 12 via Spiritual Pajamas. The record was recorded at Infinitespin Recorders in Van Nuys, California with engineer Matt “Linny” Linesch.
The album continues to unfold back to Cass with a satire on justice, ‘The Law Offices of Dewey, Cheatum and Howe’. From the saloon ‘Long Horns, Long Necks, Long Legs’, to the rainforest ‘Herbamera’. Neal blasts in again with the sun-bleached rambler, ‘Los Angeles Alleyway’. Farmer Dave’s ‘Skiffleman’ “sings a song for everyone”. Cass plays with memory in a song about coming of age in the Bay Area on ‘Oakland Scottish Rite Temple Waltz’. Penultimately, ‘Santa Fe’, an elliptical broadside about materialism and waste. SKIFF concludes by pushing off again, out into the familiar waters of a traditional skiffle number, ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’, each member taking a perhaps all-too casual solo.
