Making noise since 2009, The Virginmarys are a Rock duo from Macclesfield, England with a penchant for heavy riffs and socially conscious lyrics. Despite having self-released a few sold-out EPs, the band saw their biggest mainstream success with the release of their debut album, King of Conflict, in 2013. The album received high critical praise, gaining a nomination for “Album of the Year” at the 2013 Classic Rock Awards and being awarded the iTunes Editor’s Choice. After being awarded “Best Breakthrough Act” that same year at the Classic Rock Awards, the band followed up this success with another full-length album in 2016, Divides.
Produced by Gil Norton who has worked with artists such as Foo Fighters, Pixies, and The Distillers, Divides featured the hit songs “Motherless Land” and “Into Dust.” Composed of Singer/Guitarist Ally Dickaty and Drummer Danny Dolan, The Virginmarys are a driven, dichotomous, and dangerous duo who have continued to deliver uncompromising Rock with a soul. In their latest venture, Northern Sun Sessions, out Friday, November 16, 2018, the band seeks darker topics with a new vigor and unapologetic brashness that is unexpected and cathartic.

NRBQ have evolved considerably over the course of a career that’s lasted over 50 years and isn’t done just yet. But the band’s self-titled debut album, originally released in 1969, is joyous evidence that their originality and spark were there right from the very start. Cut several years before NRBQ settled into their “classic” lineup, here founders Terry Adams (keyboards and vocals) and Joey Spampinato (bass and vocals) are joined by lead singer Frank Gadler, guitarist Steve Ferguson, and drummer Tom Staley. Gadler and Ferguson’s musical personalities put a different spin on this music than NRBQ would generate a few years down the line, when Al Anderson’s guitar work and songwriting would become a key part of their recipe. Here, they sound more like a boogie band than they did when they hit their stride, albeit one with a very individual approach. But the group’s trademark eclecticism and sense of fun are very much in evidence. The album’s opening one-two punch of Q-approved reworkings of Eddie Cochran’s “C’mon Everybody” and Sun Ra’s “Rocket #9” demonstrate both their musical reach and the depth of their influences, Adams’ crazy-quilt melodic ideas and inspired keyboard work are featured on “Kentucky Slop Song” and “Stay with We,” Spampinato contributes a first-class rocker in “You Can’t Hide” (NRBQ would revisit the song on 1980’s Tiddlywinks), and Steve Ferguson’s estimable guitar work and songwriting bona fides (“I Didn’t Know Myself,” “Stomp,” and “Fergie’s Prayer”) are a reminder of what a potent force he was in the band’s early days. NRBQ is the work of a band that sometimes sounds like it’s still finding its way in the recording studio, and Eddie Kramer’s production sometimes lacks the punch the musicians needed. But even though NRBQ would make better albums in the future, their debut is the work of a group that already had a sound all its own and a love of music that was wildly infectious, and this is an often overlooked gem in the Q’s catalog.

The second album from BRTHR is an exquisite piece of calm and catchy Americana. The musical pair (guess what their relation to each other is) have benefited from a label move from JellyFant to Backseat, with the clumsiness of a drum machine – their first album, 2017’s Strange Nights’ biggest detriment – being replaced, it seems, by a live drummer. The simple change in magical. Whilst before, the delicate vocals and guitar lines floated above a hard, unnatural beat that fought to stop you from relaxing into the rest of the music, A Different Kind Of Light allows full focus on BRTHR’s talents as creators of pitch perfect indie-country.

Former Icicle Works leader Robert Ian McNabb returns to the fray with a stunning 14 track album of hard rocking loud guitar chest beaters (in the main, but not all). After his last few CDs, McNabb has been promising his fans a loud album of hard rock songs and, on first play, it’s obvious that he’s kept his promise and smashed out a bunch of three-minute classics. Not really since ‘Head Like A Rock’ has he really gone for the amps turned up this high and the distortion pedal throttled to the max.
But, to marry all the volume with his usual hooks and melody is no easy task and the acerbic and often stinging yet witty bard from the people’s republic of Merseyside has been pretty damned on the money throughout his career and has managed to write plenty of classic songs and there are certainly several contenders here. It’s bright and outward looking and has a sound of hope and a great uplifting feeling on songs like ‘Medicated Emma’ and ‘The Day I Learned To Say No’ to name just two but this album doesn’t just rock out there are more reflective moments and songs and even a curveball included.
True to his promise, this is electric and loud, and he’s roped in some fantastic partners in crime with the Alarm’s Smiley keeping proceedings tight and punchy in the engine room; also, some guy called Buck from R.E.M guesting on one track and old partners in crime Andy Lord-Ashton and Chris Kearney, who have both played on several albums before so know how McNabb works best.
