Frosting On The Beater is back, re-issued by Omnivore Recordings (who have, among many releases new and old, reissued our first album, Failure, plus releases by Big Star, Game Theory, etc). The album will be released as a double CD set: one CD containing the original album, remastered from the original analog tapes, plus enough bonus material to fill out the rest of the CD; and another full CD of more bonus material. Don’t expect just a repackaging of material already available on our 2000 boxed set of outtakes 15 of Frosting On The Beater’s 31 bonus tracks on this reissue have never been heard! Βάσει όσων βλέπω στο bandcamp τού Onepointwo (Κωνσταντίνος Γιαζλάς), το “Shape Metamorphosis” είναι η πέμπτη κυκλοφορία του. Πέρυσι, πάνω-κάτω τέτοια εποχή, είχαμε γράψει τα σχετικά και για ένα προηγούμενο άλμπουμ τού… ηλεκτρονικού μουσικού από τη Θεσσαλονίκη (για το “Melt Into the Sun”) κι εκεί είχαμε πει πως… «ο Γιαζλάς δεν είναι άγνωστος στην εγχώρια ηλεκτρονική σκηνή, αφού τον συναντάμε στους Keene (είχαν ηχογραφήσει πριν μια δεκαετία για την Poeta Negra) και στους SANS (κι απ’ αυτούς βγήκε ένα άλμπουμ πρόπερσι, ξανά για την Poeta Negra)».

Και το “Shape Metamorphosis” [Private, 2018], χοντρικά, είναι ένα old school άλμπουμ (όπως ήταν και το “Melt Into the Sun”). Χοντρικά, όμως, και σε γενικές γραμμές, επειδή είναι μάλλον αδύνατον να το «προσλάβεις» ως ένα άλμπουμ των seventies(στην ολότητά του).

Ας πούμε, στο εισαγωγικό “The place of all I, II και III” υπάρχει ένα σκληρό ρυθμικό beat, που είναι περισσότερο nineties(χωρίς να είναι techno), με το όλον track να εμφανίζει πάντως και κάποια trip-hop χαρακτηριστικά, παρά το εντελώς τύπου-Tangerine Dream τελείωμα. Και το δεύτερο, όμως, track, το “Microcomputer void & system error”, συνδυάζει ηλεκτρονικά patterns από περισσότερες από μία δεκαετίες, έχοντας πάντως και αυτό στρωτή αφήγηση. Γενικώς, ο Onepointwoδεν παράγει εικονοκλαστική και abstract μουσική, ούτε είναι fan τού free- noise electronic. Οι συνθέσεις του, σε όλο το διάβα τους, διακρίνονται γι’ αυτή την… αφηγηματική ανάπτυξη, που χαρακτηρίζει τη γερμανική σκηνή της δεκαετίας του ’70 (Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream, Michael Hoenig, Harald Grosskopf και τα συναφή), κάποιες μάλιστα φορές παρουσιάζοντας και το σχετικό kraut χάσιμο (άκου το πώς ολοκληρώνεται το “The mindbender”).

Μπορεί τα ισχυρά κατά τόπους beats να εμποδίζουν το “Shape Metamorphosis” να ενδυθεί μόνιμα cosmic χαρακτηριστικά, αλλά τούτο δεν μπορεί να λογισθεί ως μειονέκτημα.

(Mόλις 20 αριθμημένες κόπιες με υπογραμμένη ζωγραφιά, insert και αυτοκόλλητο για όποιον προλάβει – αν προλάβει).

With musical influences drawn from traditional Appalachian roots (Jean Ritchie a prime influence), coloured by the desert noir mood of resonant slide guitar, it opens with the title track, a number about how the powerful feed off the vulnerable with the striking image of how “they come-a-stealing the babies from our beds…they drag them from behind and skin them for their hides”.

That dark, almost gothic, storytelling vein continues into the pedal steel streaked, strummed murder ballad ‘Hue And Cry’, the gentle melody counterpointed by the lyrics, evoking dread in the opening line “I told Mama he was swinging a knife” and proceeding to recount a tale that conjures bloody images of Herod’s massacre of the children, persecution and ethnic cleansing.
