Remastered from original tapes.2-CD expanded with 27 bonus tracks. Career exactly 30 years prior by releasing a home-recorded cassette called Failure, which to our complete surprise became an instant favorite around the Northwest, earning us critical accolades, radio airplay, and major label interest all in a very short time. We were lucky to find ourselves living just a few doors down the road in Seattle from Arthur “Rick” Roberts and Mike Musburger, who agreed to join our band on bass and drums, respectively. Signed to Geffen Records, we recorded our second album Dear 23, and toured the U.S., including support tours for both Redd Kross and The Replacements. These three albums on Geffen remain beloved by our fans; our most popular, most often cited, most requested works. However, over the years, the CDs have been in and out of print, there have been inconsistent presences on streaming, the LPs either long out of print or not issued at all depending on the territory. Dear 23 on CD came out in the early days of the format, and the older CDs are not exactly true to the analog masters the albums were made on. Good news: all that’s about to change. Dear 23 will be re-issued by Omnivore Recordings (who have, among many releases new and old, reissued our first album Failure plus releases by Big Star, Game Theory, etc). Each album will be released as a double CD set: one CD containing the original album, remastered from the original analog tapes, plus enough bonus material to fill out the rest of the CD; and one full CD of more bonus material. Don’t expect just a repackaging of material already available on our 2000 boxed set of outtakes—nearly all of the bonus tracks on these new reissues have never been heard! Dear 23 will now stretch across two LPs and will be mastered at 45 RPM. We made the decision to stick to just the original albums for the vinyl release, and give it room to breathe across two glorious slabs of wax. So if bonus tracks are your thing, the 2-CD set will have you covered.

MARIA FARANTOURI / CIHAN TÜRKOĞLU νέα εμφάνιση στην ECM
Αν δεν με απατά η μνήμη μου, όπως κι ένα τυπικό ψάξιμο που επιχείρησα, αυτό είναι το δεύτερο άλμπουμ της Μαρίας Φαραντούρη στην ECM, μετά από το “Athens Concert” του 2011, τη συνεργασία της, εννοώ, με τον σαξοφωνίστα Charles Lloyd. Και είναι ένα άλμπουμ γενικώς διαφορετικό από εκείνο, αλλά και με κάποιες ομοιότητες. Και δεν εννοώ φυσικά τη φωνή της Φαραντούρη, αλλά το (παραδοσιακό) ρεπερτόριο, που ακουγόταν εκεί και ακούγεται κι εδώ. Βεβαίως το “Beyond the Borders”[ECM / AN Music, 2018], που γίνεται σε συνεργασία με τον τούρκο συνθέτη, χειριστή του saz και του kopuzκαι ακόμη τραγουδιστή Cihan Türkoğlu, είναι ένα διαφορετικό στη σύλληψή του άλμπουμ, το οποίον, όμως, θα το παραλλήλιζα με κάτι παλαιό και δοκιμασμένο – το ελληνικό LP «Η Μαρία Φαραντούρη Τραγουδάει Λιβανελί» [MINOS, 1982], τη συνεργασία της Φαραντούρη, δηλαδή, με τον τούρκο συνθέτη Zülfü Livaneli. Ας μην το συνεχίσουμε, όμως, με τις ομοιότητες και με τις διαφορές ανάμεσα στο πιο καινούριο άλμπουμ και στα δύο παλαιότερα, και ας επικεντρωθούμε στο “Beyond the Borders”, που είναι και το θέμα μας.

Το άλμπουμ έχει, κατ’ αρχάς, ποικίλο ρεπερτόριο. Τραγούδια διαφορετικά, που τα ενώνει η ενορχήστρωση (Cihan Türkoğlu saz, kopuz, φωνή, Anja Lechner βιολοντσέλο, Meri Vardanyan κανόνας, Χρήστος Μπάρμπας ney, İzzet Kızıl κρουστά) και βεβαίως η φωνή της Φαραντούρη. Τραγούδια παραδοσιακά (τουρκικά, σεφαραδίτικα, μακεδονίτικα, αραβικά) και ακόμη τέσσερα σε μουσικές του Türkoğlu, όπως και ένα αρμένικο του Komitas. Αυτά τα τραγούδια ερμηνεύονται επίσης σε διαφορετικές γλώσσες, όπως είναι φανερό – αν και στα επτά από τα εννέα ακούγονται ελληνικά. Υπάρχουν όμως τραγούδια που ακούγονται σε δύο γλώσσες, όπως το “Drama köprüsü / Το γεφύρι της Δράμας” (τουρκικά-ελληνικά) και το “Wa habibi / Αχ αγάπη” (αραβικά-ελληνικά). Υπάρχει, επίσης, τραγούδι, το “Triantafylia”, το οποίο Türkoğlu και Φαραντούρη το λένε, και οι δυο τους, στα ελληνικά.
Το άλμπουμ είναι γενικώς ωραίο. Ήσυχο και ταπεινό, όπως και τα τραγούδια που αποδίδονται. Δεν έχει μεγαλοστομίες, ούτε επιδεικτικά παιξίματα, ούτε λαβυρινθώδεις (ανατολίτικους) αυτοσχεδιασμούς και αν τελικώς θα σε κερδίσει –εμένα με κέρδισε μετά την τρίτη-τέταρτη ακρόαση– θα σε κερδίσει με την απλότητα και την ουσία του. Παίζουν άσσοι μουσικοί, η Μαρία Φαραντούρη πάντα καλλίφωνη και σε καλή φόρμα, με ένα κομμάτι για ανθολογία, το “Ta panda rei / Τα πάντα ρει” (σε μουσική Türkoğlu, και στίχους της Αγαθής Δημητρούκα διαμορφωμένους από σπαράγματα του Ηράκλειτου) και με όλα τα υπόλοιπα από «αρκετά καλά» και πάνω.
Προσωπικώς δεν βρίσκω κανένα σοβαρό μειονέκτημα στο “Beyond the Borders”, αν και κάποιοι μπορεί να του προσάψουν την κάπως παλιομοδίτικη, γενική, εικόνα του. Παρότι τέτοιου τύπου άλμπουμ, και είναι αλήθεια αυτό, ήταν στα πολύ επάνω τους στη δεκαετία του ’90 κυρίως (με την κυριαρχία του ethnic), ένας τέτοιος ισχυρισμός δεν μπορεί αποτελέσει σοβαρή αιτία για διάλογο. Κανείς δεν είναι υποχρεωμένος να ακολουθεί τις μόδες, όταν εκείνες εξελίσσονται, ούτε κάποιος μπορεί να ελεγχθεί επειδή τις ακολούθησε, όταν είχε παύσει να είναι μόδες πια.

Waylon Jennings – Hangin’ On (1968/2018)

Sticking to totally musical criteria, the best tracks on this collection are so good that dismissing the gunky ones is easy. There are other criteria for rating a Waylon Jennings album but, however one looks at it, Hangin’ On is one of this country artist’s very special productions. Some might see distinction in the fact that the brief liner notes are written by none other than the wonderful singer Skeeter Davis. Others may treasure this particular album because it really looks like ol’ Waylon is lighting up a joint on the front cover. Then, there is the ultimate criterion for judging the value of an album not only by Jennings, but by some of his associates such as Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, and Willie Nelson, at least in the eyes of a used record store buyer from North Carolina: “If they’s wearin’ beards, I don’t want it. If they’s shaven, then ah’m interested.” While many publications use some sort of star system for rating records, it appears a system based on lack of beards is really the key with some types of country music. In this case, the clean-shaven Jennings was still a few years from the rumbling of heavily rock-influenced music that he would create in the ’70s, but had already been pushing at country music’s perceived boundaries since the middle of the decade. Considering that his groups featuring two drummers would eventually play as loud as the Rolling Stones, the fact that an acoustic dobro can practically drown out the whole band here is a pretty good indication of how relatively soft, even pretty, the music on this album is. But closer listening reveals that the dobro is being turned up really loud for certain effects, just one of many intricate touches that make certain cuts on this record absolute marvels of country music.
The premier track is “I Fall in Love So Easy,” which weaves together three completely different sections — and these sections are varied in tempo, in how they are mixed, and in the feeling with which they are played. Subtle use is made of brass, sometimes in written passages in combination with harmonica. There was a lot of work put into this, producing the kind of good feeling one gets from a fine chamber group when it is really playing well. There are also a couple of tracks that clunk, one of which might be the Roy Orbison cover, no matter how well it is sung. This type of submissive personality is not the best character for Jennings to act out in a song. He does much better with the threatening slob who sings “Woman, Don’t You Ever Laugh at Me” or, even better, the depressed psycho who destroyed himself over unrequited love for “Julie.” A check of the songwriting credits reveals, to no surprise, that it is Jennings who wrote the latter ballad. It is one of his best originals. Those who find the John Hartford song “Gentle on My Mind” heavy trodding will need to soak their feet after listening to this album; if a cover version of the song isn’t bad enough, a few minutes later a cheap imitation with similar minor chords burps up. Jennings’ backup band, the Waylors, actually plays on a few tracks here, a hard-fought compromise with RCA producer Chet Atkins, who wanted his own session crew to provide backup. There are no further musical credits, and no information about who thought up the wonderful parts of this album. Call it a brilliant collaboration of Jennings and Atkins at the dawn of a new era in country music.

“Other than Junior Brown’s label affiliation, little else has changed on the singer/guitarist’s sixth album and first in four years. Honky tonk, rockabilly, and the rich sound of Bakersfield country are leavened with a healthy sense of humor (“Two Rons Don’t Make It Right,” “Where Has All the Money Gone?”), played with Brown’s custom-made 12-string “guit-steel,” and sung in his distinctive baritone. Side trips into lounge-ish jazz (“You Inspire Me”), hard rock ( perhaps not an entirely necessary cover of Hendrix’s “Foxey Lady”), and slow blues (an album-closing ten-minute “Monkey Wrench Blues”) seem like desperate attempts to show how eclectic he is. They might be live showstoppers, but just don’t blend in well with the rest of the disc’s more countrified approach. Much better is “Jimmy Jones,” a classic, laconic, mostly spoken story-song about a brother who wanders off to his death in war. The horn-fueled jump blues swing of “Hill Country Hot Rod Man” is another diversion, but this one seems more natural and is an excellent forum for Brown’s guitar pyrotechnics. A little too spotty, especially in its schizophrenic last quarter hour, the album is an adequate representation of the different styles that define Junior Brown. The pacing doesn’t support his talent, making this a frustrating if somewhat enjoyable listen that is probably better appreciated after you have seen him live.” (Hal Horowitz, AMG)
