Jay-Bee & The Ultratone All-Stars – Life Ain’t Got No Shortcuts (2018)
320 kbps | 107 MB | LINKS
“Life ain’t got no shortcuts“ by Jay-Bee & the Ultratone All Stars takes you on a musical journey through the black South of the USA. The 11 songs written by Jens Bohlen (aka Jay-Bee) demonstrate Blues with a lot of Soul, a splash of Gospel, Swing, Funk and New Orleans elements. The album has been produced and recorded by Tony Braunagel (Grammy Award Winner, Blues Award “Blues Drummer 2018” Winner) in Johnny Lee Schell’s (Grammy Award Winner) Ultratone Studio in Los Angeles. Besides Jens Bohlen on guitars you can hear members of the Phantom Blues Band (Mike Finnigan, Larry Fulcher, Johnny Lee, Tony) and many other excellent studio musicians from L.A. on this CD. E.g. Josh Sklair (Grammy Award Winner and former bandleader of Etta James) and Lenny Castro on percussions add their unique sounds, just to mention a few. In total, 18 musicians participated in the recording sessions. Outstanding is the unparalleled soul-blues voice of Sugaray Rayford (Blues Awards 2018 nominee). He brings the songs to life and his passion and energy speak straight to you heart.
Exciting harmonies, soulful melody lines and sophisticated arrangements with horns (arranged by Thomas Kässens ) and choir are typical for Jens Bohlen’s blues. The lyrics of his songs cover the important aspects of life: joy and sorrow, love and pain, life and death.

The Mothers of Invention – We’re Only in It for the Money (1968/2018)
FLAC | 783 MB | LINKS
From the beginning, Frank Zappa cultivated a role as voice of the freaks — imaginative outsiders who didn’t fit comfortably into any group. We’re Only in It for the Money is the ultimate expression of that sensibility, a satirical masterpiece that simultaneously skewered the hippies and the straights as prisoners of the same narrow-minded, superficial phoniness. Zappa’s barbs were vicious and perceptive, and not just humorously so: his seemingly paranoid vision of authoritarian violence against the counterculture was borne out two years later by the Kent State killings. Like Freak Out, We’re Only in It for the Money essentially devotes its first half to satire, and its second half to presenting alternatives. Despite some specific references, the first-half suite is still wickedly funny, since its targets remain immediately recognizable. The second half shows where his sympathies lie, with character sketches of Zappa’s real-life freak acquaintances, a carefree utopia in “Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance,” and the strident, unironic protest “Mother People.” Regardless of how dark the subject matter, there’s a pervasively surreal, whimsical flavor to the music, sort of like Sgt. Pepper as a creepy nightmare. Some of the instruments and most of the vocals have been manipulated to produce odd textures and cartoonish voices; most songs are abbreviated, segue into others through edited snippets of music and dialogue, or are broken into fragments by more snippets, consistently interrupting the album’s continuity. Compositionally, though, the music reveals itself as exceptionally strong, and Zappa’s politics and satirical instinct have rarely been so focused and relevant, making We’re Only in It for the Money quite probably his greatest achievement.

Walter Trout – Survivor Blues (2019)
VBR~253 kbps | 117 MB | LINKS
Walter Trout and Provogue / Mascot Label Group will release Survivor Blues globally on January 25. Trout is no ordinary artist and this is no ordinary covers album. From the day he conceived the project to the moment he counted off the first song in the studio, he had a bolder plan for this release. Trout shares. “I’m riding in my car sometimes, and I’ve got a blues station on – and here’s another band doing Got My Mojo Workin’. And there’s a little voice in me that says, ‘Does The World need another version of that song?’ So I came up with an idea. I didn’t want to do ‘Stormy Monday’ or ‘Messin’ With The Kid.’ I didn’t want to do the Blues greatest hits. I wanted to do old, obscure songs that have hardly been covered. And that’s how Survivor Blues started…”
Likewise, long-standing fans have given up trying to second-guess Trout’s next move. The track listing of Survivor Blues is a window into the 67-year-old’s fast-moving backstory, chronicling a five-decade career whose one constant is his deep love of the Blues. Opener “Me, My Guitar And The Blues” tips a hat to cult hero Jimmy Dawkins, whose records Trout devoured while cutting his teeth as a ’60s axeslinger in New Jersey. “Nature’s Disappearing” nods to his celebrated ’80s tenure in John Mayall’s near-mythical Bluesbreakers. In-between, you’ll find cherished favourites from a lifetime’s listening, with songs that caught Trout’s ear at key junctures in his journey, from backing up John Lee Hooker in the ’70s, to bringing the groove to Canned Heat in the ’80s or breaking through as a solo artist in the ’90s.
The roll-call of artists might be eclectic, but there’s a cohesion to Survivor Blues. From the outset, Trout made it his mission to harness the power and spirit of the originals, while stamping his inimitable musical personality onto each new take. He offers, “My idea was to do these songs like me, to arrange them for my band and style – not to just copy the originals note-for-note.”
