Lee Ranaldo – Electric Trim: Live at Rough Trade East (2018)
320 kbps | 131 MB | LINKS
Recorded at London’s Rough Trade East in the autumn of 2017, the album depicts an intimate solo performance, the first UK date on his extensive Electric Trim tour before Ranaldo returned later that year with the Electric Trim trio. Electric Trim Live at Rough Trade East – which features artwork by long time collaborator Richard Prince – marks the end of touring and releases for Electric Trim before Ranaldo returns to the studio to record its follow up. Electric Trim was recorded in New York City and Barcelona in collaboration with producer Raül ‘Refree’ Fernandez and award winning New York author Jonathan Lethem (Motherless Brooklyn / The Fortress of Solitude) who worked with Ranaldo on lyrics on six of the songs. The album extends the work of Ranaldo’s solo canon, through his collaboration with Fernandez, Ranaldo moves into some rich new sonic territories and production techniques, experimenting with electronic beats and samples alongside live players. Ranaldo is a co-founder of Sonic Youth, a visual artist, producer and writer. On his Songs & Stories tour he has been performing songs from Electric Trim, showing films (including footage of some of his early influences and rare Sonic Youth performances) and telling stories from his early days in New York, his years with Sonic Youth and beyond.

The Original Harmony Ridge Creek Dippers – Zola and the Tulip Tree (2018)
FLAC | 134 MB | LINKS
Zola & the Tulip Tree is the third release by Mark Olson since his departure from the Jayhawks. The Original Harmony Ridge Creek Dippers also include his wife, Victoria Williams, and Mike “Razz” Russell, but it is Olson’s vehicle. He writes nearly all of the songs, and the group is eventually called Mark Olson and OHRCD on their fourth release. At this point, his Creek Dipper output was available only by mail-in orders. His next album, My Own Jo Ellen, would be released on the Hightone label. His first two Creek Dipper releases (The Original Harmony Ridge Creek Dippers and Pacific Coast Rambler) are both stripped-down, acoustic, home-recorded releases, and Zola is no different. Hearing Olson in this lo-fi setting makes you miss two things about his work with the Jayhawks: the harmonies with Gary Louris, and songs with a rock sound. What’s missing in Olson’s Creek Dipper releases is variety. Except for the occasional lively tune here and there (“Custom Detroit Railroad,” “Cedric Harper,” and the instrumental “Onion River Camp”), Olson does very little to change the pulse of this CD. The acoustic sound and recording quality of Zola gives you the feeling that you are hearing what would be other artists’ demo recordings. These songs are interesting yet feel like they could be improved upon with another exploration. A lot of great artists release all-acoustic albums — Beck, Springsteen, and Neil Young come to mind — but they sprinkle them throughout their careers. Beck’s Mutations was a good album partly because it was released between the dance-heavy Odelay and Midnight Vultures. It would be nice to see Olson vary his sound more from album to album, too. It would make a good album like Zola & the Tulip Tree stand out more and not get lost in a series of similar releases.

The Original Harmony Ridge Creek Dippers – The Original Harmony Ridge Creek Dippers (2018)
FLAC | 171 MB | LINKS
Released on his own record label and available through his website, Mark Olson’s post-Jayhawks effort, The Original Harmony Ridge Creek Dippers, is a low-key effort that takes a distinctly homemade approach. On these informal tracks, Olson strums his acoustic guitar — augmented by a varying combination of harmonica, fiddle, bass, and mandolin, with touches of percussion here and there — and he sings in a plaintive voice, accompanied here and there by his wife, Victoria Williams. The result is somewhere between Gram Parsons and Nick Drake, a country/folky sound on songs of personal meaning delivered offhandedly. As commercial releases go, one would have to call it underperformed and under-produced, with the feel of late-night exhaustion and dreamlike expression. Recorded in February 1997 and released soon after, the album was picked up for distribution by KOCH in August 2001.

For their second homemade release, Mark Olson (formerly of the Jayhawks) and company stuck to the model established by their simple debut. Good news, because this again puts the focus squarely on the songs. The assistance of wife Victoria Williams (again credited as “Mabel Allbright”) and pals Mike Russell and Marc Ford helps Olson realize his minimal, largely acoustic, musical vision. Olson’s and Williams’ songs commemorate such common, everyday pleasures as a good rain and changing seasons. This is intimate music that recalls old-time traditions and manages to avoid the cloying earnestness that often afflicts folkies and unplugged rockers. First recorded and self-released in 1998, the album was picked up for distribution by KOCH International in 2001.

Orchestre Abass – De Bassari Togo (2018)
In 1972, Orchestre Abass released two incredible singles on Polydor. These records — featuring “Samarin Banza”, “Haka Dunia”, and other Afro-funk masterpieces — were powerful enough to knock any music head out, but it wasn’t until the discovery of some unreleased material by the band that the seeds for this project were planted.
It all happened in 2008 in Ghana. Analog Africa head Samy Ben Redjeb was going through some tapes that had previously been the property of Polygram, one of the major record companies based in west Africa. In the late ’80s political instability and curfews had paralyzed the music industry forcing Polygram to close their Ghanaian subsidiaries leaving all of their recordings behind. These recordings had been packed in…
…boxes and left vegetating in an Accra warehouse for three decades. All of the tapes looked unharmed and the Orchestre Abass tape was in excellent condition. Samy began fiddling around with the idea of releasing an album of the band and that plan got an additional boost with le “coup de grace” which had landed in the form of an ultra-rare tune called “Honam” discovered in Sotoboua, a small northern Togolese town. Samy had previously discovered some similar music in Northern Benin and in Nigeria and pictured an area that spread all the way from Northern Ghana to Northern Cameroon, an area he dubbed “The Islamic funk belt” due to the fact that Super Borgou de Parakou, Napo De Mi Amor, Uppers International, and Hamad Kalkaba, just to name a few, were from that “belt” and made up of musicians with an Islamic background. This can be felt and heard in the music and particularly in the singing, since many of the musicians had attended koranic schools and the languages used in the songs often had Arabic elements fused in. Orchestra Abass’ recordings, with their heavy, organ-led sound, combined with the deftest of musical touches, were the work of a rhythmic powerhouse, deeming them one of Togo’s funkiest bands.
Unfortunately, Malam Issa Abass, the founder, guitarist, and organ player of the band, was killed in 1993 by a grenade thrown into his bedroom. Samy tracked down Thon Komla, one of the band´s songwriters, and Abderaman Issa, the guitar player of the band, to help him reconstruct the biography of the band. — forcedexposure.com

The Greenberry Woods – House (2018)
320 kbps | 102 MB | LINKS
The Greenberry Woods were one of Baltimore’s most popular bands in the early and mid-1990s. They signed to Sire Records, a subsidiary label of Warner Bros. and released “Rapple Dapple” in 1994 (featuring the hit single “Trampoline“) and “Big Money Item” the following year. They played the 1994 HFStival at RFK Stadium and opened for Debbie Harry, Squeeze and others.
The new album from The Greenberry Woods, “House,” is their first record in more than 20 years, and is a mix of studio and live recordings from 1989 to 1995.
The four members of The Greenberry Woods reunited earlier this year, and played a pair of sold out warm-up shows at Waverly Brewing Company. Even after all these years, the vocal harmonies and irresistible hooks are as airtight as ever.
