AUTOMATON: Talos [Sound Effect Records, 2018]

Οι Automaton σχηματίστηκαν το 2011 στην Αθήνα και το “Talos” είναι το δεύτερο άλμπουμ τους (μετά το “Echoes of Mountain Ida” του 2015). Μέλη των Automatonείναι σήμερα οι Νίκος Κελαϊδής κιθάρες, εφφέ, Γιώργος Σταυρακάκης κιθάρες, φωνή, Δημήτρης Ζήσης φωνή, Τάκης Σαμώλης μπάσο, synth, εφφέ και Λυκούργος Τζαρδής ντραμς, ενώ στην ηχογράφηση τού “Talos” βοηθούν και οι Ψαραντώνης φωνή, κρητική λύρα, Νίκος Αργυρόπουλος ντραμς (αμφότεροι σ’ ένα track) και Μιχάλης Καββαδίας lead guitar(σε δύο tracks).

Το “Talos” επιβεβαιώνει τις αισθητικές στοχεύσεις των Automaton.

Σκληρό ροκ, «μέταλλο», με dark / doomπροδιαγραφές, αλλά και με διάφορα άλλα στοιχεία να παρεισφρέουν στα κομμάτια – κάνοντάς τα να ξεχωρίζουν από τα δεκάδες άλλα «παρόμοια», που συναντάς τριγύρω.

Δεν είναι μόνο τα acoustic parts, τα synths περάσματα και τα εφφέ, αλλά είναι κυρίως αυτή η αίσθηση του «χάσιμου», που προσφέρεται αφειδώς στα μεγαλύτερα σε διάρκεια tracks, όπως τα “Trapped in darkness” (11 λεπτά), “Giant of steel” (9 λεπτά), “Talos awakens” (10 λεπτά) και “Submerged again” (7 λεπτά), τα οποία οδηγούνται κάποιες φορές ακόμη και προς… ψυχεδελικές κατευθύνσεις. Βεβαίως, το «χάσιμο» δεν επιτυγχάνεται με τον τρόπο των κλασικών συγκροτημάτων τού acid-rock, μα κυρίως μέσα από τις μεγάλες διάρκειες, που ευνοούν την αργή-επαναληπτική αφήγηση ή ακόμη και τη μονοτονία.

Τα ωραία ενταγμένα στοιχεία από την παράδοση (βλ. Ψαραντώνης), όπως και οι αναφορές στην (ελληνική) μυθολογία, βοηθούν ακόμη περισσότερο τους Automatonνα οικοδομήσουν ένα δικό τους προφίλ, απαλλαγμένο (όσο γίνεται) από τις γνωστές μανιέρες του είδους.

Πολύ καλό άλμπουμ.

METHEXIS: Topos [Private / Sound Effect Records, 2018]

Οι Methexisείναι, βασικά, ο Νικήτας Κίσσονας, που συνθέτει, ενορχηστρώνει, κάνει την παραγωγή και παίζει κιθάρες, μπάσο και πλήκτρα. Το σχήμα ή και project είναι γνωστό στους φίλους τού εγχώριου progressive, όπως και ο Κίσσονας ως frontman εξάλλου, αφού παλαιότερα ο ίδιος ήταν μέλος των Verbal Delirium (που είχαν τυπώσει άλμπουμ τους και για τη γαλλική Musea). Το “Topos”, περαιτέρω, είναι το τρίτο άλμπουμ των Methexis, μετά τα “The Fall of Bliss” (2011) και “Suiciety” (2015) κι εκείνο που θα ενδυναμώσει το όνομά τους στη neo-prog σκηνή, καθώς τυπώνεται και σε LP (που… κολλάει παραδοσιακά και με το είδος).

Στον «Τόπο» λοιπόν, που τυγχάνει ανεξάρτητης παραγωγής με διανομή από την Sound Effect, ο Κίσσονας δεν είναι μόνος του, αφού τον συνοδεύουν οι Θόδωρος Χριστοδούλου ντραμς, Νικόλας Νικολόπουλος (από τους Ciccada) φλάουτο, Κωνσταντίνος Κεφαλάς τρομπέτα και Παναγιώτης Κραμπής πιάνο. Μ’ αυτή τη line-up είναι ηχογραφημένο το LP/CD, που αποτελείται από δύο μεγάλης διάρκειας tracks (20λεπτα χοντρικά) ικανά να μας διαφωτίσουν περί των… ορέξεων των Methexis.

Το ύφος, που κυριαρχεί εδώ, είναι εκείνο του mellow-progressive, με τις ποικίλες «κλασικές», ακόμη και cinematic αναφορές και τους συχνά σαφείς υπαινιγμούς από διάφορα μεγάλα συγκροτήματα του είδους (το ότι η δεύτερη πλευρά τού άλμπουμ είναι αφιερωμένη στον Andy Latimer κιθαρίστα κ.λπ. των Camel σίγουρα… κάτι λέει), που έγραψαν μια το ίδιο μεγάλη ιστορία.

Το “Topos2” είναι ένα πολύ ενδιαφέρον track(ακόμη πιο ενδιαφέρον από το “Topos1” εννοώ), που περνάει από ποικίλες φάσεις (κάπως σαν μια πολυμερή σουίτα) και που γι’ αυτόν ακριβώς το λόγο διατηρεί πάντα την ουσία και τη φρεσκάδα του, παρά τα σχεδόν 21 λεπτά του. Το τι μπορεί να «ανιχνεύσει» εδώ ένας πεπειραμένος ακροατής είναι μάλλον… απερίγραπτο (και όχι δεν είναι οι Camel εκείνοι που… βγάζουν μάτι στη δεύτερη πλευρά), καθώς ο Κίσσονας συνταιριάζει με μαεστρία τις ποικίλες αναφορές του, κατορθώνοντας να φτιάξει ένα track, που ν’ ακούγεται και complex (κατά τα διδάγματα του παρελθόντος) και πρωτότυπο (αφού ο ήχος είναι σημερινός και οι επιρροές πλήρως αφομοιωμένες). Έξοχο καθ’ όλη τη διάρκειά του (και ακόμη περισσότερο από τη μέση και μετά).

This second edition of the Mickey Thomas-era Jefferson Starship/Starship polished ’80s rock is actually a weird hybrid which you could call psychedelic metal. For fans of the fragments that were Sunfighter, Baron von Tollbooth & The Chrome Nun, Manhole, and other experimental Airplane offshoots, this material is much too mainstream for its own good. But it isn’t the eminently dislikable Mickey Thomas who is the major culprit as much as it is producer/engineer Ron Nevison, whose homogenization of records from Ozzy Osborne to Heart displayed a glaring lack of creativity, inspiration, or sense of anything remotely resembling art. Yes, Marty Balin actually practiced “Jane” with the group prior to his leaving the Freedom at Point Zero sessions, and had he stayed onboard, the approach may have been a more progressive folk-rock. It was Larry Cox who engineered from Dragon Fly to Spitfire, co-producing the music with the very capable band. Minus Balin and Cox, the true evolution of the Airplane sound is mutated and muffled on Modern Times. Critic William Ruhlmann noted that “Stairway to Cleveland” is “as gutsy a statement of purpose as any in rock,” but that tune and the title track, two ofPaul Kantner’s three contributions, are the only ones with elements that stay true to the band’s original mission. “Stairway to Cleveland” follows the dramatic and techno-orchestrated “Alien,” which at least is better than the generic “Free” preceding it, or the second cousin to “Jane,” which is “Mary.” It means you have to sift through the Mickey Thomas/Ron Nevison sterilization to find the advertised product: Jefferson Starship music. “Mary” is a far cry from what the Jefferson Starship name implies and belonged on a Mickey Thomas solo disc. Rather than continue the natural evolution of the Airplane sound, both “Jane” and its follow-up, “Find Your Way Back,” lead off their respective albums and borrow heavily from Foreigner’s 1978 hit, “Hot Blooded” (itself a nick of David Bowie’s “Jean Genie”). “Find Your Way Back” went Top 30 in the Spring of 1981, and is a decent arena-rocker from the pen of Craig Chaquico that the guitarist sometimes opens his jazz shows with. Considering where Chaquico went after Starship’s breakup, a jazzier direction for the group may have been more worthwhile than arena rock and could have had more staying power. The liners proclaim, “And introducing Grace Slick,” and that’s humor the album needed more of. Slick’s presence enhances the LP, Pete Sears and wife Jeannette Sears creating in “Stranger” a precursor to “We Built This City” where Slick and Mickey Thomas blend their voices, but that’s the future. Paul Kantner’s “Wild Eyes” would work better in the previous settings of “Red Octopus” and “Earth,” for here it has that psychedelic metal sound again which is just too overdone to matter to longtime fans of the group. Modern Times was used as an album title by a variety of artists from jazz to folk to country, but despite its moments, this Modern Times, its predecessor Freedom at Point Zero, and its successors, Winds of Change and Nuclear Furniture, became the antithesis of the works of art which are Dragon Fly, Red Octopus, Earth, and Spitfire. Ron Nevison produced three of the four 1980s hard rock albums by this group: draw your own conclusions.

HARMONY IN MY HEAD is another of Cherry Red’s celebrations of a bygone era – this time, the boom in Power Pop and New Wave which followed the Punk explosion in 1977. This triple-CD box set spins off the success of the 4CD compilation Action Time Vision (2016), which documented Punk on independent labels. New Wave was a term coined in 1977 to describe a clutch of new artists whose music shared much of the energy of punk, but boasted a more sophisticated level of musicianship and a heavier reliance on traditional pop melodies. Although the term had such a wide definition in the States that it was quickly rendered almost meaningless, it was more strictly applied in the UK, with the radio-friendly likes of Elvis Costello and Squeeze scoring numerous hits and influencing younger bands to the extent that, by the early Eighties, the New Wave itself had become Old Wave..The British scene’s reiteration of the appeal of a more traditional pop approach saw several attempts to provide an alternative to the unsatisfactory ‘New Wave’ epithet. Nick Lowe coined the phrase “pure pop for now people” to describe his approach, early brand leaders The Pleasers described their sound as Thamesbeat (a literal update of Merseybeat), while a handful of bands (including The Monos! and The Monochrome Set) played regularly at a London club that marketed itself as Newbeat, “a reaction to punk”. But none of these terms caught on, and instead the genre became known as Power Pop. Once again, there was a significant difference between the UK and US models, but Britain had its own Power Pop scene that slowly mutated into the Mod Revival. Many of the Mod bands drew heavily on melodic 60s records (it was, after all, The Who’s Pete Townshend who had coined the term ‘Power Pop’ back in 1967), although by late 1981 that scene had in turn morphed (in London, at least) into the short-lived New Psychedelia movement. .HARMONY IN MY HEAD includes many of the New Wave/Power Pop scene’s biggest hitters alongside the more melodic Punk.
