Paul proudly announces the 11th and 12th classic works from his revered catalogue to be remastered, reissued and expanded across multi-format installments of his GRAMMY-winning Archive Collection, to be released December 7, 2018 via MPL/Capitol/UMe.

First up is the four-disc (3CD, 1DVD) limited deluxe edition of Wild Life, the debut album from Wings, originally released December 1971. Written by Paul and Linda McCartney (with the exception of a cover of Mickey & Sylvia’s ‘Love Is Strange’), Wild Life is beloved by fans for its raw and direct vibe – having been recorded in just over a week with the majority of tracks laid down in a single take. Wild Life’s limited deluxe edition treatment features the full album remastered at Abbey Road plus 25 bonus audio tracks including rough mixes of the album, original single edits, B-sides, home recordings and other previously unreleased material across three CDs. The set’s DVD features rare footage of acoustic home videos, rehearsals and more. The Wild Life deluxe package includes a 128-page book written by David Fricke telling the story behind the album – including track-by-track information and new interviews with Paul and key album personnel, a 48-page scrapbook of tour diaries, lyrics and set lists, unpublished Polaroids, lyrics, notes and memorabilia from the MPL archives. Wild Life’s download redemption card will provide access to all audio in HD 24/96kHz unlimited high-resolution versions.

Next up is a six-disc (3CD, 2DVD + Blu-ray) numbered limited deluxe edition of the second Wings album and first credited to Paul McCartney and Wings, Red Rose Speedway. Released in April 1973 and featuring the #1 single ‘My Love,’ Red Rose Speedway was the first Wings album to hit #1 on the U.S. chart. The Red Rose Speedway limited deluxe edition features three discs of audio including the original album remastered at Abbey Road, no less than 35 bonus audio tracks, including a reconstruction of the originally conceived double album version of Red Rose Speedway, singles, B-sides, alternate mixes and previously unreleased tracks. The 2DVD + Blu-ray portions of the deluxe are packed with rare and previously unseen footage, including the James Paul McCartney TV Special, interviews and music videos, as well as the never before seen film The Bruce McMouse Show – fully restored and remixed in stereo and 5.1 surround sound. The package includes a folio containing 14 replica hand-drawn original character sketches by Paul and facsimile dialogue sheets for the film, a 128-page book containing many previously unpublished images by Linda McCartney, expanded album and single artwork from the archives and story behind the album – including new interviews with Paul McCartney, and key album personnel – and track-by-track information, written by Amanda Petrusich, five replica handwritten lyric sheets and photo print, a 64-page ‘Wings In Morocco’ photo book, all housed in a numbered outer slipcase. The Red Rose Speedway download redemption card will provide access to all audio in HD 24/96kHz unlimited high-resolution versions.

Finally, the 11-disc Paul McCartney and Wings 1971–73 numbered limited edition super deluxe compilation features not only the entire contents of the Wild Life 4-disc numbered limited deluxe edition and of the Red Rose Speedway 6-disc numbered limited deluxe edition – but also the exclusive live album, Wings Over Europe. This exclusive collection features 20 previously unreleased, newly mixed live tracks recorded over the course of 5 shows, an introduction featuring Paul recounting memories of the 1972 tour, a 96-page photo book including previously unreleased images by Linda McCartney and Captain Snap, a replica of the 1972 Wings Over Europe tour program, and access to downloadable 24/96kHz unlimited high-resolution audio versions.

The Paul McCartney Archive Collection debuted with the November 2, 2010 re-release of Paul McCartney and Wings’ 1973 milestone Band on the Run, which won the 2010 GRAMMY Award for Best Historical Album, while the Archive Collection’s Deluxe Edition Box Set of the 1976 classic Wings Over America took the 2013 GRAMMY for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package. The most recent previous instalment was 2017’s reissue of Paul’s eighth studio album Flowers In The Dirt, which ROLLING STONE called, “spectacular… an extraordinary document,” and the OBSERVER hailed as, “perhaps the greatest record to emerge from the world of AOR in 1989… an absolute pleasure to rediscover today.”

Every release in the on-going Paul McCartney Archive Collection is supervised by Paul himself, who oversees all aspects of each and every title from remastering to the curation of lost tracks, outtakes, artwork, photographs and video from his personal vaults, and much more. The result is one of the most ambitious and personal undertakings of its kind, one that encompasses more than 40 years of cherished, classic material from the most successful songwriter and recording artist in music history.

Memphis Slim – The International Playboy Of The Blues 1948-1960: From Chicago To London, All The Hits And More (2018)

Embracing the white college market like so many of his contemporaries Memphis Slim stepping into the international market and became a very famous ambassador for the blues around the world. This 25 track set is littered with hits and classic songs including “Messin’ Around”, “Frisco Bay”, “Blue And Lonesome”, “Help Me Some”, “Angel Child”, “Mother Earth” and “The Comeback”. Also featured here is “Nobody Loves Me” and although not a hit for Memphis, it went on to be recorded by Lowell Fulson and B.B. King as “Every Day I Have The Blues” eventually becoming a hit and a blues standard. This modest selection of titles from the vast recorded legacy of Memphis Slim presents a vivid picture of the career path he followed from the juke joints of the South to the sophisticated bars of Paris, France and is a must for blues fans.

Malcolm Middleton – Bananas (2018)

How much of a connection should pop music have with everyday life? For Malcolm Middleton, music is the opposite of escapism. With so much modern music processed within an inch of its digital life, it is therefore wholly refreshing to find Middleton and his accomplices in the studio singing of day to day fallibilities.

Bananas is the singer-songwriter’s most direct and confrontational record yet – but not in a musical sense. The music itself is a comforting and often uplifting presence, upward looking in its trajectory and beautifully shaded, subtleties revealing themselves through flowing piano or busy guitar. The musicians themselves, including King Creosote and Jenny Reeve on backing vocals, are on top form.

Yet it is in the lyrical content where Middleton really hits home, looking in the mirror (so it would seem) to confront some demons with an unflinching gaze. He does this in such a way that a smile comes readily to the listener’s face; for Middleton’s wry observational powers are still at their height, delivered in his winsome Dumfries burr. “There’s nothing worse than a successful Scotsman, as he writes into his book,” he sings on Twilight Zone, a songs whose day to day mundanity is all the more touching for its airy musical setting. “Fuck off with your happiness,” he delivers with brio on Love Is A Momentary Lapse In Self-Loathing.

Not for him the pretence that life is a breeze, needing no mental strength. Instead he presents us with an album of nine songs that dig in for genuine, hard-fought positivity. Laying his cards on the table with first song Gut Feeling, he tells of the “rows and rows of naysayers, marching with the vampires, a troupe of doubting Thomases in my mind”.

Often the struggle is inspirational. On Buzz Lightyear Helmet, it’s ok for him to say “everything is gonna be alright, but today I’m feeling shite”. This song is the album’s most ambitious, an eight-minute suite of distilled feelings and contrasting musical styles whose common denominator is its frank declarations. ‘We’re gonna have fun fun fun on the East Coast!’ he proclaims, and though it may be a dead pan delivery, he clearly means it.

There is a stark underside though. “Ever so lost and lonely, give me some company,” he sings over an electronic beat on Man Up, Man Down. Then, on Salamander Gray, he closes the album with a deeply affecting song where the coda speaks repeatedly of the “pain in my heart”. The music, however, speaks of the strength within to ease it.

Life is a struggle for many people, and Bananas – the title no doubt representing a perceived mental state rather than the fruit adorning its cover – addresses this head on. Loneliness is a problem for many in the face of the digital onslaught we face in modern life, but with Middleton he is there in the room, consoling the listener that he feels the same, but offering a positive approach.

These elements combine to make Bananas the equal of his finest work to date, and it deserves a listen and an admiring glance from all for whom life can be a struggle. It may not break new ground in a musical sense, but this is pop music with the strongest possible connection to everyday life.

Peter Karp – The American Blues (2018)

Karp is best known recently for his work on the Blind Pig label with Canadian guitarist, Juno Award winner and partner Sue Foley. Raised in south Alabama and New Jersey, his stylings embrace swamp, country and R&B in addition to the blues. Primarily a slide guitarist who’s influenced by Freddy King and Elmore James, he’d released the albums Roadshow and The Turning Point previously as a vehicle for his songs rather than stardom. But his work with Foley has reached the top of blues charts around the world.

a%2Bjazz%2BLost%2Bbodies.jpg

Sarathy Korwar & The Upaj Collective – My East Is Your West (2018)

Sarathy Korwar…Recorded live in early 2018, My East Is Your West is a follow-up to drummer and percussionist Sarathy Korwar‘s acclaimed Day to Day (2016). Both albums are simultaneously part of the Indo-jazz continuum and of the broader cultural reset which has been revitalising London’s jazz scene since 2015, and which is still gathering momentum.
When it comes to rhythmic intensity, the UPAJ Collective, the band Korwar leads on My East Is Your West, is in the same league as label stablemate Binker and Moses, the ferocious semi-free group featuring saxophonist Binker Golding and drummer Moses Boyd, whose Dem Ones (2015), Journey to the Mountain of Forever (2017) and Alive in the East? (2018), all on Gearbox, are key manifestos of the new London scene.

In terms of transcultural scope, however, the music on My East Is Your West has more in common with that of London astral-jazz / world-jazz collective Emanative, whose Earth (Jazzman, 2018) is a veritable Silk Road collection of styles and influences in which Indo-jazz is writ large. UPAJ and Emanative are both made up of musicians of South Asian and European heritage and there are several connections between the line-ups. Drummer Nick Woodmansey, leader of Emanative, mixed Day To Day and has mixed and co-produced Korwar’s next studio album, due out in spring 2019; Korwar is a member of Emanative; so too is UPAJ’s baritone saxophonist and flautist, Tamar Osborn (who completes an impressive hat-trick by being a mainstay of Dele Sosimi ‘s Afrobeat Orchestra, one of the top three Afrobeat bands in the world).

Compositions by Amancio D’Silva, John McLaughlin, Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane and Don Cherry are included on My East Is Your West along with others by Ravi Shankar, Joe Henderson and Abdullah Ibrahim. But these are are no mere revivalist trips down memory lane. The pace and surging crescendos of the performance of Sanders and Leon Thomas’ “The Creator Has A Master Plan,” for instance, together radically transform the composers’ original recording. Coltrane’s “Journey In Satchidananda,” Henderson’s “Earth” and D’Silva’s “A Street In Bombay” also get a reboot. The body slams the album delivers give astral jazz an exhilarating twist.

UPAJ is a collaborative line-up in which the ensemble is the focus of attention most of the time. But individual musicians also turn in memorable solos. Among those that stick in the mind long after the disc has stopped playing are keyboardist Al Macsween’s spin on Abdullah Ibrahim’s “Hajj,” which recalls McCoy Tyner’s rocket-fuelled essays with John Coltrane; sitarist Jasdeep Singh Degun’s high-voltage take on “Satchidananda;” alto saxophonist Jesse Bannister’s call and response with Degun on Ravi Shankar’s “Mishrank;” and Tamar Osborn’s gritty bottom-end baritone saxophone on Don Cherry’s “Utopia And Visions.” Korwar and fellow percussionist B C Manjunath mostly kind of “never solo and always solo,” as Joe Zawinul said of all the members of early Weather Report.

My East Is Your West was recorded at one of the crucibles of the new London scene, Hackney’s Church of Sound. Audio quality is superb, as we are growing to expect from Gearbox’s location recordings—Binker and Moses’ Alive In The East? was recorded, stunningly, at another scene hotspot, Total Refreshment Centre (closed by Hackney Council in summer 2018 following licensing-law infractions but hopefully reopening).

An access-all-areas, 360°, deep strata, Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval blinder.
