This double-CD set of Chocolate Watchband material is so overpowering that it’s difficult to know where to begin. A group that never charted a single (forget an album) across four tumultuous years is suddenly given the box-set treatment in miniature, a double-disc package containing not only every track ever recorded and released by the actual Chocolate Watchband, but also every track ever attributed to them, and also three cuts featuring original Watchband lead singer David Aguilar providing new lead vocals to replace singing that was wiped (or not recorded) at the time. And just to show how screwed-up their history was, the non-Watchband material runs 20 minutes longer than the stuff they actually recorded. (Their one-time manager, Ed Cobb, who seldom seemed to have much good to say about the actual Watchband, is probably watching in total astonishment from whatever celestial plain he alighted upon in death.) And what makes it all even better is that not only is all of this material organized properly for the first time, the real Watchband stuff filling up disc one, but it all sounds incredible — for the first time, even amid reissues by Rhino and Sundazed, here is a collection of songs that don’t sound at least half a generation “off” in quality and source material. Disc two contains everything ever attributed to the group, including the contents of the entire third album, One Step Beyond (which was done by a substitute version of the band). The collection also, at last, identifies the sources of two sets of fake Watchband tracks as the rival West Coast bands the Yo-Yoz and the Inmates, both of which had been involved with Cobb. And even that material is in its best condition ever, and not bad for it, either — it might not have been the Watchband, but most of this was better than decent music. The only two cuts here that were a mystery going in were the versions of “Medication” and “‘Til the End of the Day” on which David Aguilar put on new vocals in 2005 — and he pulls it off successfully. The 35-year gap is bridged without too much trouble, and if he sounds older, he still sings well. Basically, this set reduces in importance the prior reissues from Sundazed and other labels, and the accompanying annotation provides the most detailed history of the band ever assembled. In essence, it’s worth every cent being asked for it, and then some, for fans of garage punk and ’60s garage bands, as well as psychedelic enthusiasts.

Mysterio is a valuable listen for fans of Echo & the Bunnymen who did not keep up with McCulloch between their 1988 breakup & 1997’s ‘Evergreen’.
Mysterio showcases some of the same brilliance which led the rock press to dub Echo the next U2 & includes his excellent cover of leonard cohen’s ‘Lover Lover Lover’, one of the singles alongside ‘honeydrip’. Mysterio is an underappreciated album worthy of investigation. Standout tracks include ‘Magical World’, ‘Dug for Love’, ‘Close Your Eyes’, & ‘Damnation’ which is enough to make this a strong album. This reissue features lyrics, notes & 18 bonus tracks, including all the non-album tracks from the associated singles and a further six rarities.

The second part of our THEM trilogy…detailing the post-implosion fate of Northern Ireland’s greatest gift to music until The Undertones!…THEM! ….so we’ve learned over time of the fate of two factions….Van Morrison went to New York to launch a solo career with initial guidance from legendary soul producer Bert Burns…..Alan Henderson led the remains of the last lineup away from rainy Belfast to new life of garage/psych in California….which you can hear on “Now And Them” (CRREV 29)…. From a slightly earlier lineup, brothers Jackie and Pat McAuley enlisted a new crew…remaining true to the tough R&B/beat sound of the Them recordings they had contributed to (like “Gloria” and “Baby Please Don’t Go”)
Meeting Maverick producer Kim Fowley in Denmark Street’s legendary Giaconda coffee bar, they decided to take this sound forward in a series of blistering recordings…which developed the beat sound like psychedelia never happened!..the crude guitars, the swirling farfisa…much like The Monks!….Combined with the semi-rap lyrical sensibilities Fowley had used in “The Trip”, it was an awesome sound….but one out of time….this album, put together for the Swedish market where The Gypsies were a legendary live attraction, never saw a proper release outside Sweden….but here it is expanded with their mega-rare single “People Let’s Freak Out” featuring Fowley and the infamous Guy Stevens (the original Mod DJ, and producer of both Mott The Hoople and The Clash in his time!) as “The Freaks Of Nature….as well as the mysterious instrumental “The Gorilla”..and single mixes of “Gloria’s Dream” and the awesome “Secret Police”…which could be hit now!..fabulous stuff!
This is the first time on CD in the UK…..first ever UK release actually! And all in the usual Rev-Ola state of the art remastering! Release includes the mono single mixes with lavish package including detailed notes by Jon ‘Mojo’ Mills of Shindig magazine….featuring an exclusive interview on the album’s history with producer Kim Fowley! A must for all fans of THEM, British beat/R&B and garage punk….a legendary album from a legendary band…..especially appropriate in the current climate of garage punk!
