Following the 2015 release of the critically acclaimed “Fast Forward”, legendary songwriter Joe Jackson is releasing the 20th studio album of his career. ‘Fool’ is the fulfilment of a career-long dream: to finish a tour and head straight into the studio with the band firing on all cylinders. So, on July 29th, Joe wrapped up his 2018 summer tour at The Eqyptian Theater in Boise, Idaho – and the following day set up shop at Tonic Room Studios in town.

The album was co-produced by Jackson and producer Pat Dillett (David Byrne, Sufjan Stevens, Glen Hansard, etc.) The band in question was the same group that Jackson has played live with ever since the release of “Fast Forward”: Teddy Kumpel on guitar, Doug Yowell on drums, and long-time collaborator Graham Maby on bass (Maby was on that first recording session 40 years ago as well).

The alternative-rock quartet Papa Roach announces their highly-anticipated 10th studio album, Who Do You Trust? out on January 18, 2019 through Eleven Seven Music .

The 12-track anthemic album Who Do You Trust? features heavy rhythmic guitars and catchy hooks on “Who Do You Trust?” and “Renegade Music” and melodic tunes on “Not The Only One” with emotionally-charged lyrics throughout the album. The 10th studio album is produced by Nick “RAS” Furlong and Colin Cunningham. The track “Top Of The World” is produced by Jason Evigan.

Ο γερμανός πιανίστας FlorianWeber μπορεί να είναι ακόμη 41 ετών, αλλά παρ’ όλα αυτά έχει καταφέρει πολλά στη μέχρι τώρα καριέρα του. Φυσικά, το να ηχογραφεί για την ECM δεν είναι μικρό πράγμα –το “LucentWaters” είναι το δεύτερο άλμπουμ του εκεί, αφού είχε προηγηθεί, το 2016, το “Alba” μαζί με τον MarkusStockhausen–, όμως το γεγονός πως αποτελεί μέλος, μεταξύ άλλων, και του LeeKonitz New Quartet σημαίνει πολλά. Ίσως και περισσότερα… Κάπως έτσι έρχονται και τα «καλά λόγια» του γερο-θρύλου Konitz (που είναι 91 ετών πια) στο πίσω μέρος του booklet…“Florian is one of the most creative piano players I have ever played with. His music is totally free. He has got the texture, the feeling, just beautiful. I am very touched by this music. It feels divine to me”. Καλύτερα δεν γινόταν…

Βεβαίως, για να μην υπάρξει κάποια παρεξήγηση μ’ εκείνο που λέει ο Lee Konitz, οι συνθέσεις τού Weber, στο “Lucent Waters” (όλες δικές του) δεν έχουν κάποια στενή και απόλυτη σχέση με τη free (jazz), όπως τη γνωρίζουμε από τα sixties(αμερικάνικα ή ευρωπαϊκά). Δεν ξέρω δηλαδή τι ακριβώς εννοεί ο θρύλος-μουσικός, αλλά, μάλλον, θα πρέπει να αναφέρεται σε μια ρέουσα αντίληψη που διακρίνει τον τρόπο τού Γερμανού, και που, πολύ συχνά, σχεδόν πάντα, συνδυάζεται με την ομορφιά (ακόμη και στην αυτοσχεδιαστική φάση του). Ναι, υπάρχει λυρισμός στο παίξιμο και στις συνθέσεις του Weber, ακόμη και όταν αποκτούν εκείνες πιο δυναμικά χαρακτηριστικά. Σε μια τέτοια σύνθεση, την “Time horizon”, μπορεί να διακρίνει κάποιος έναν περίτεχνο συνδυασμό ανάμεσα στην πιανιστική ωραιότητα και την ορμητικότητα του ρυθμικού τμήματος (Linda MayHan Oh κοντραμπάσο, Nasheet Waitsντραμς), με τον τρομπετίστα Ralph Alessi(το τέταρτο μέλος του κουαρτέτου) να συμπληρώνει ιδανικώς στο επόμενο “Fragile cocoon”.

Το “Lucent Waters” δεν είναι ένα απλό άλμπουμ. Έχει ψάξιμο, δύστροπες «γωνίες», αλλά και μιαν αμεσότητα που σε μαγκώνει αμέσως – ακόμη και από το πρώτο άκουσμα. Με λίγα λόγια δηλαδή… ένα ακέραιο και δυνατό CD.

ANJA LECHNER / PABLO MÁRQUEZ: Franz Schubert: Die Nacht [ECM New Series / AN Music, 2018]

Η Anja Lechnerείναι μια από τις πιο γνωστές ευρωπαίες (Γερμανίδα) τσελίστριες, που κάνει, χρόνια τώρα, ηχογραφική καριέρα στην ECM. Στην Ελλάδα την μάθαμε περισσότερο, το 2004, όταν είχε συνεργαστεί (πάντα για την ECM) με τον πιανίστα Βασίλη Τσαμπρόπουλο. Τώρα, η Lechner, υπογράφει ένα άλμπουμ μαζί με τον αργεντινό κλασικό κιθαρίστα Pablo Márquez, στο οποίο αποδίδονται συνθέσεις των Franz Schubert (1797-1828) και Friedrich Burgmüller (1806-1874). Βασικά τραγούδια του Schubert (“Die Nacht”, “Der Leiermann” κ.ά.), η σονάτα “Arpeggione” και μια romance. Το άλμπουμ, όμως, περιλαμβάνει (σε κάποιες θέσεις) και nocturnes του Burgmüller, οι οποίες είναι το ίδιο εντυπωσιακές. Άπλετος λυρισμός, μελωδίες ανεπανάληπτες και δύο όργανα (κιθάρα και τσέλο), που μεταφέρουν το πνεύμα των δύο συνθετών στο σήμερα μ’ έναν τρόπο… ικανό να συγκινήσει κάθε μουσικόφιλο. Και όχι μόνον τους ακροατές της κλασικής, στους οποίους κατά βάση απευθύνεται η «Νύχτα».

TILL FELLNER: In Concert, Beethoven / Liszt [ECM New Series / AN Music, 2018]

Αυστριακός κλασικός πιανίστας γεννημένος το 1972, ο Till Fellnerέχει την ιστορία του στην ECM New Series(την πιο κλασική και αβαντγκαρντίστικη ετικέτα της ECM), αφού έχει ηχογραφήσει εκεί J.S. Bach, Ludwigvan Beethovenκ.ά. σε τέσσερις τουλάχιστον προηγούμενες εκδόσεις. Στο πιο πρόσφατο “InConcert” καταγράφονται δύο παλαιότερες ηχογραφικές sessions του Fellner, για σόλο πιάνο, σε έργα Lisztκαι Beethoven εκ νέου, που έλαβαν χώρα στη Βιέννη (2002) και στο Middlebury των ΗΠΑ (2010) αντιστοίχως.

Το έργο του Liszt Années de pèlerinage / Première année – Suisse, ήτοι τα πρώτα εννέα tracks, σχετίζεται με την ελβετική περίοδο τού συνθέτη, και παρότι ξεκίνησε (το έργο) να γράφεται το 1835 έγινε γνωστό μόνο μετά τη δημοσίευσή του, το 1855. Φυσικά πρόκειται για μια ρομαντική πιανιστική περιπλάνηση (ως έμπνευση ο Λιστ είχε το ελβετικό φυσικό τοπίο των ορέων, των κοιλάδων και των λιμνών, αλλά και τις παραδοσιακές αλπικές μελωδίες), την οποίαν φέρει σε τέλειο «πέρας» ο Till Fellner.

Το έργο τού Beethoven Sonata No.32 in c minor op.111 αποτελεί την τελευταία πιανιστική σονάτα του και προέρχεται από το 1822. Αποτελείται δε από δύο μέρη, τα Maestoso-Allegro con brio ed appassionato και Arietta.Adagio molto semplice e cantabile, με την Arietta να εμφανίζει στην τρίτη variation μιαν αντιστικτική επεξεργασία, που φέρνει στο νου ακόμη και… τζαζ σύνθεση! Κριτική στο αίσθημα τού παιξίματος τού Αυστριακού δεν υπάρχει (εγώ τουλάχιστον δεν πρόκειται να κάνω).

Sourakata Koité was born in 1955 in Malème, Senegal, a Malinke-speaking area. He is indeed a member of a family of djéli (or griot in french), the hereditary caste of musician-storyteller-historians in West Africa.
His musical life began early: at age three he began to play kora (a 21-string harp) with his uncle and brother; at 11 he performed with four members of his family as Les Griots (two koras, one bala, one djembé and one singer) in a piano-bar named Thiosan. In 1977, a six-month engagement at a restaurant in Fréchencourt, France brought him to Europe, leaving Dakar where he had lived since 1975, having experienced the auspicious launch of mbalax music. He moved to Paris in 1978 to visit his brother — who was touring with…

In Paris he began to play in different bands, including Les Lézards, Les Ballets Kodia, La Kola, Le Griot de Paris, among others, and for different musicians like Manu Dibango, Jacques Higelin, Touré Kounda, Manfeï Obin, Mangala, Luther Allison, Mah Damba and more. He also performed alone and in a duo with a bala (traditional xylophone) player.

Sourakata, newly situated in Paris, soaked up the new sounds he heard there and expanded his musical repertory. He began to compose his own songs and build koras, allowing him to play and experiment with different tunings. Sourakata is a true innovator in that regard: he conceived of two 37-string koras (including a double handle one), and another with 22 strings (some of which are metallic guitar strings, and that enhance that characteristic buzzy sound). Sourakata links this idea to his utilization of overdubs on some tracks during the recording of en Hollande in 1984. Additional strings expands the possibilities, he says, and also the sound of his instrument. “Kora usually has very little bass: it seems that there’s a kora, but also a piano in there; they are two, four… or even five!”

Very curious and eclectic in his tastes, Sourakata listens and plays a wide range of styles—jazz, rock, reggae, funk, blues, classical. Relaxing in his apartment close to la porte des lilas in Paris’ 20th arrondissement, he listens to Bob Marley, James Brown and the online Malian music station Radio Wassoulo, excited by his recent return to international performances. “People should participate during the show!,” he says ; “They won’t be able to hide, and it will give me courage!”

Milsap is revisiting his greatest hits with some notable friends on Ronnie Milsap: The Duets, out Friday via Riser House. The album, which was several years in the making, is believed to contain the last recording sessions for Leon Russell and Troy Gentry. Other artists on the set include Dolly Parton, Jason Aldean, Billy Gibbons, Kacey Musgraves, Willie Nelson, Little Big Town and Strait, whose duet with Milsap on his 1989 traditional country hit “Houston Solution”.

“Some might ask me why I decided to do this,” said the singer. “What the hell else am I going to do? I’ve got great brand-new songs that I love, so when you do, you record them,” Milsap says. While the album is primarily hits, it also includes his duet with Nelson on a new song written by Mike Reid, “A Woman’s Love,” and even a song that Milsap received from his CPA, “Southern Boys and Detroit Wheels,” where he partners with ZZ Top’s Gibbons.

Ronnie Milsap: The Duets is also memorable for the singer as he recorded the disc at Black River’s recording studio. It’s a location he knows very well: He once owned it and recorded many of his biggest hits there, including “Stranger in My House” and “She Keeps the Home Fires Burning.”

“One of the first things I did when I got enough of a good royalty check to come in was to build my own studio. I bought it from Roy Orbison,” Milsap says.
