Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp – Sauvages Formes (2018)

Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel DuchampOrchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp are a pretty unique band. The name translates as “All Powerful Marcel Duchamp Orchestra” and besides being a mouthful, the name also indicates the intriguing combination of classical orchestration, humour and pop sensibility that is this group’s bread and butter.
Marcel Duchamp, of course, is the father of dada-ism, which in turn begat surrealism and, possibly, the world’s very first arts provocateur. One of his early and most famous pieces is “Fountain” which was nothing more than a French-style pissoir, or urinal, turned upside down. Naturally, an uproar followed which promptly put Duchamp on the map. In one fell swoop, the artist proved himself to be witty, inventive, provocative and…

..keenly aware of the power of publicity (even as long ago as 1914 with his first readymade bottle rack).

Well, it’d be pretty near impossible to make that kind of impact in today’s art world, but Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp have certainly adopted Duchamp’s irreverence and kitschy humour. At the same time, the group are competent and presumably, classically trained musicians, from France and the UK, fourteen in all, including a rhythm section, percussion and string players.

Sauvage Formes is a smorgasbord of sound and styles, a journey through vastly different musical landscapes, going from the underground rock club to the concert hall with brief but exhilarating trips to the arts lab. The first comparison that comes to mind is Stereolab with strings, but there’s also echoes of Sonic Youth, Polyphonic Spree, and much more.

Each track is a little journey of its own, where we follow the band leaping effortlessly across genres and sounds in a dizzying and fascinating musical adventure.

Blow starts off nice and minimalist with some vaguely atonal guitar over plunky percussion and then smoothly evolves into a catchy 60s pop tune.

The Stereolab comparison seems most apt with Mes Yeux, although the cool guitar break sounds more like vintage Sonic Youth. This is a band who know their indie-rock history!

Bêtes Féroces is a Steve Reich/Tom Waits-like tapestry of tuned percussion, upright bass, Ribot-esque guitar and angelic choir over which a girl waxes poetically about the pace of modern life.

The Unknown sounds like a cross between My Bloody Valentine and Stereolab while Danser Soi – même is a personal favourite. Ebbing and flowing gently, this song is a lovely sing-along anthem featuring the combined voices of the band, percussion, upright bass, and an absolutely adorable, just barely in tune recorder solo. — folkradio.co.uk

his triple disc collector’s box set features rare broadcast recordings by Neil Young, originally transmitted from live shows the great man performed in the 1970s and 1980s; his glory years if you will. Disc One includes two such superb performances : the first a short set Neil played alongside Bob Dylan and members of The Band at the San Francisco SNACK Benefit concert in 1975, and secondly his legendary acoustic set from the late show he gave at Boston’s Music Hall in November 1976. Disc Two features Young’s marvellous appearance on the Austin City Limits programme in 1984. Including recent cuts mixed with NY classics, this is perhaps Neil’s finest performances of that period. Disc Three houses another ’80s gig, played at the end of the decade in Hamburg, Germany, on 8th December 1989, shortly after the release of his dynamic Freedom album.

Hot Tuna – The Phosphorescent Rat [Remastered] (1974/2019)

Hot Tuna’s first album made after the breakup of Jefferson Airplane found Jorma Kaukonen taking a firm hand: he’s the author of nine out of 10 songs. The walking tempos and familiar soaring, psychedelic guitar solos are in place, but much of the music is given over to Kaukonen’s reflective lyrics, sung in his matter-of-fact voice, and there are strings on a couple of tracks. Although the approach would produce Kaukonen’s most impressive record the following year when he made the acoustic solo album, and although critics have pointed to The Phosphorescent Rat as among Hot Tuna’s better efforts, the group’s fans, devoted as they were to its extended versions of blues standards, seem to have been unimpressed: the album was Hot Tuna’s lowest charting among those released during its 1970-1978 heyday. Probably a lack of enthusiasm at RCA, due to the demise of Jefferson Airplane, didn’t help in the album’s promotion, either.

Michael O’Shea – Michael O’Shea (2019)

ACMOSLPx1_Cover.jpg320 kbps | 82 MB | LINKS

Michael O’Shea’s sole, breathtaking album ranks among our favourite of all time – yet hardly anyone seems to have heard of it. Produced by Wire’s Bruce Gilbert and Graham Lewis at the Dome studio in 1982, it’s an utterly singular work of magick meshing myriad, worldly modes into music that rarely fails to reduce us to tears. It’s one of those albums that basically sounds like nothing else – the only record we can draw some parallels to is Dariush Dolat-Shahi’s life changing ‘Electronic Music, Tar and Sehtar’, despite it coming from the other end of the world.

First brought to our attention by Blackest Ever Black at the start of this decade, we’ve gradually developed an obsessive fascination with its sublime, rapid dervishes and warbling rhythmelodies, so it’s a pleasure to see it finally made easily available to everyone who we’ve ranted about it over the years (2nd hand copies have been historically pricey and hard to come by!), and especially replete with its enlightening new sleeve notes by archivist and writer Failed Bohemian.

A busker among other trades, O’Shea was an itinerant soul who, after a childhood and formative years spent between Northern Ireland and Kerry in the south of the country, and extensive travel between Europe, Turkey and Bangladesh, created his own instrument – an electrified dulcimer known as Mó Cará (Irish for ‘My Friend’) – which he performed on at Ronnie Scott’s, before later playing on bills with everyone from Ravi Shankar to Don Cherry, and also recording with The The’s Matt and Tom Johnson.
