Ο Moppa Elliottείναι ο μπασίστας των Mostly Other People Do the Killing (MOPDtK) και άρα ένας από του πιο σημαντικούς συνθέτες της σύγχρονης jazz. Το «άρα», για να μην υπάρχουν… απορίες, αιτιολογείται από το γεγονός πως ο Elliott συνθέτει για τους MOPDtK, οι οποίοι είναι, απλώς, ένα κορυφαίο τζαζ γκρουπ του σήμερα. Στο δισκορυχείον έχουμε γράψει πολλές φορές τόσο για άλμπουμ των MOPDtK (“Paint”, “Loafer’s Hollow”, “Mauch Chunk”, “Blue”, “Red Hot”, “Slippery Rock!”, “Forty Fort”), όσο και για τα προσωπικά τού Moppa Elliott (“Still, Up in the Air”). Φυσικά, έχουμε γράψει για πολύ περισσότερα άλμπουμ που σχετίζονται με τα κατά καιρούς μέλη και με τις δραστηριότητες αυτής της παρέας, που είναι από τις πιο δημιουργικές στη σύγχρονη τζαζ σκηνή, κάτι που επιβεβαιώνεται εξάλλου και από τις εγγραφές των Jon Lundbom & Big Five Chord, Sam Kulik, Bryan and The Haggards κ.λπ. Επανερχόμαστε, λοιπόν, στο κεφάλαιο, με αφορμή το νέο… τριπλό άλμπουμ (2CD) του Moppa Elliott, που τιτλοφορείται “Jazz Band/ RockBand / Dance Band” και που θα κυκλοφορήσει από την Hot Cupτην 15η Φεβρουαρίου.

Σ’ αυτό το διπλό CD ο Moppa Elliott χωράει τρεις διαφορετικές μπάντες, με τις οποίες παίζει τρεις «διαφορετικές» μουσικές! Η πρώτη μπάντα είναι η Advancing On a Wild Pitch(Sam Kulik τρομπόνι, Charles Evansβαρύτονο σαξόφωνο, Danny Fox πιάνο, Moppa Elliott μπάσο, ChristianColemanντραμς), που αποδίδει… τζαζ μουσική, η δεύτερη είναι η Unspeakable Garbage (Dr. Rocksδηλ. Jon Irabagon τενόρο σαξόφωνο, Nicky Picksδηλ. Nick Milivoi κιθάρα, Ronny Stabsδηλ. Ron Stabinsky πιάνο, πλήκτρα, The Mopδηλ. Moppa Elliott μπάσο, Daniel JamesMonaghan ντραμς), που αποδίδει… ροκ μουσική και η τρίτη είναι η Acceleration Due to Gravity(Nate Wooley τρομπέτα, Dave Taylor τρομπόνι, MattNelsonάλτο & σοπράνο σαξόφωνα, Bryan Murray τενόρο, σοπράνο & balto σαξόφωνα –balto είναι ένα άλτο σαξόφωνο, στο οποίο έχει προσαρμοστεί επιστόμιο βαρύτονου–, KyleSaulnier βαρύτονο σαξόφωνο, AvaMendozaκιθάρα, George Burton πιάνο, Moppa Elliott μπάσο, MikePrideντραμς), που παρουσιάζει… χορευτική μουσική. Στην πρώτη μπάντα ανήκουν τα πρώτα έξι tracksαπό το Disc1, στη δεύτερη ανήκουν τα τέσσερα τελευταία από το Disc 1 και τα πέντε πρώτα από το Disc 2, ενώ στην τρίτη ανήκουν τα έξι τελευταία από το Disc2.
Απλά, ουσιαστικά και κατανοητά είναι τα πράγματα και γι’ αυτό τόσο σπουδαία, όπως σπουδαία (δηλαδή το ένα καλύτερο από το άλλο!) είναι και τα 21 tracks, που ακούγονται εδώ (20 γραμμένα από τον Elliottκαι ένα, το “Power”, που είναι από τα «χορευτικά» και που ανήκει στον Kanye West – λέμε τώρα, καθώς το κομμάτι τού West έχει μέσα samples από Continent Number6, King Crimsonκαι Cold Grits).

Το να πιάσεις, λοιπόν, ένα-ένα τα tracksτού “Jazz Band / Rock Band / Dance Band” αρχίζοντας να γράφεις γι’ αυτά και λέγοντας πόσο «γαμάτα», «εξωφρενικά» και «δολοφονικά» είναι… είναι καθαρή ματαιοπονία! Ναι, ματαιοπονία, γιατί ό,τι ακούγεται εδώ έχει σοβαρό και απόλυτο λόγο ύπαρξης, καλύπτοντας άπαντα τα γούστα. Και του ακραιφνή jazzhead, που θέλει ν’ ακούσει μεγάλη σύγχρονη jazz, παιγμένη από παικταράδες, και του… ροκά ακροατή, που θα κατα-ευχαριστηθεί σύγχρονες… τζαζροκικές «προγκρεσιβιές» (με όραμα στο τώρα, και όχι αναγκαστικώς στο χθες), αλλά και του ψυλλιασμένου… χιτάκια ποπά, που θα μπορούσε να νοιώσει μια διαφορετική χορευτική μουσική – εκείνη, δηλαδή, που θα έπρεπε να κατακυριεύει τα charts, σπρώχνοντας στα αζήτητα τις γνωστές μας αστειότητες. Ναι «αστειότητες» και «γελοιότητες», αν βάλεις δίπλα τους τούτα εδώ τα συνεχή συγκλονιστικά κομμάτια (μοναδικά αριστουργήματα!), που φέρει εις πέρας ο σπουδαίος Moppa Elliott με τις τρεις… zappa-οειδείς παρέες του.

Δεν νομίζω πως θ’ ακούσω πολλά καλύτερα άλμπουμ απ’ αυτό μέσα στο 2019. Δηλαδή, το αποκλείω. Μην αμελήσετε αυτή την έκδοση!

After the initial shock fades, the existence of Christmas in the Heart seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on Christmas in the Heart, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous backing vocals. Apart from the breakneck “Must Be Santa,” which barrelhouses like a barroom, Dylan doesn’t really reinterpret these songs as much as simply play them with his crackerjack road band, dropping in a little flair — restoring “we’ll have to muddle through somehow” to “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” singing the opening of “O Come All Ye Faithful” in its original Latin — but never pushing tunes in unexpected directions. Many would argue having Dylan croon these carols is unexpected enough and, true, there are times his gravelly rumble is a bit pronounced, but nothing here feels forced, it all feels rather fun, provided you’re on the same wavelength as latter-day Bob, where the sound and swing of the band is as important as the song, where there’s an undeniable nostalgic undertow to all the proceedings. And, of course, there’s no better time for celebratory sound, swing, and nostalgia than the holidays, which may be why Christmas in the Heart is a bit of a left-field delight. — Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Preserving newly written Bob Dylan songs for copyright is the reason why the Band’s Garth Hudson rolled tape at Big Pink but The Basement Tapes were something much more than songwriting demos. Greil Marcus dubbed it a celebration of the “Old, Weird America” in his 1997 book Invisible Republic, connecting these songs to Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music, adding an extra layer of myth to tapes that were shrouded in mystery from the moment bootlegs started to circulate. The Basement Tapes Complete strengthens portions of that legend while simultaneously puncturing it. Certainly, the six-disc box — its first five discs assembled according to Hudson’s numbering system, with the sixth disc collecting sessions discovered later — feels substantially different from the LP released in 1975, where the overall picture was distorted by Robbie Robertson adding sometimes significant overdubs and including Band recordings that weren’t cut during those seven months in 1967. This is not a minor thing. These sly revisions gave the 1975 album a slight veneer that’s been stripped away by this unfussy, startlingly clear remastering, but the big difference is that the chronological sequence on The Basement Tapes Complete gives the set a narrative. The first two discs are the band warming up, playing a bunch of old songs that are often of more recent vintage than the Old, Weird America reputation suggests — there’s a clutch of Johnny Cash songs, a couple from Ian Tyson, a song apiece from Hank Williams, John Lee Hooker, Curtis Mayfield, and Dallas Frazier, a cross-section that underscores how this was the birth of what would be called Americana — and then on the second two discs, Dylan starts tying these disparate strands together on his originals. Many of these songs, usually the wildest and wooliest, showed up in 1975, so the news here are the sometimes quite different alternate takes and the major tunes that have been bootlegged widely over the years: the ghostly “I’m Not There,” the winding modern spiritual “Sign on the Cross,” the rambling, vulgar blues “Get Your Rocks Off,” and the even wilder “Bourbon Street.” These songs are necessary additions to the canon, but what gives The Basement Tapes their real resonance is the stuff that happens in the margins. It’s the half-remembered covers, it’s sterling throwaways like “Silent Weekend,” it’s Dylan turning his early songs upside down, it’s hearing Bob and the Band stumble around as they’re trying to find a groove. This is the wondrous thing about The Basement Tapes: this is music made with no expectation that anybody outside of a small circle would ever hear it. Of course, the opposite happened. The Basement Tapes leaked out and became an enduring part not only of the legacy of both Dylan and the Band, but also of American music as a whole, as it stood at the crossroads of so many different strands of American culture. — Stephen Thomas Erlewine

We heard him on one of Syran M’Benza’s albums but this is the first one
we have under this name. A little disturbance at the beginning of the album
and a little further on. With Dizzy Mandjeku, Syran M’benza, Lokassa ya
Mbongo, Bopol, and many more. Recorded in Côte d’Ivoire. I think Sammy
Massa is the same as Bumba Massa, can anyone confirm ? The web is not
very clear about it..

We hoorden hem al op een van Syram M’benza’s platen, dit is de eerste
echter die we hebben onder deze naam. Hij kraakt ietsje aan het begin
en ook wat verderop. Met Dizzy Mandjeku, Syran M’benza, Lokassa
ya Mbongo, Bopol, en vele anderen. Opgenomen in Côte d’Ivoire. Volgens
mij is Sammy Massa dezelfde als Bumba Massa, kan iemand dit bevestigen ?

A visionary, a prodigal symphonist, one of the UK’s leading influential musicians: Ed Wynne is undoubtedly a gifted instrumentalist. He is credited as one of the linchpins of the UK festival scene’s re-emergence along with his band Ozric Tentacles, who formed at Stonehenge Free Festival 1983 and became staples of the Glastonbury Festival, with their most recent performance at Glastonbury in 2016 on the Glade stage.

With an incredible flair for creating masterful tapestries of sound, and for having sold over a million records worldwide, Ed Wynne’s debut solo album on Kscope will be quick to take a hold on fans of psychedelic synth and rock music.

‘Shimmer into Nature’ was recorded and inspired by the different locations Ed Wynne travelled to over three years, from deep in the Colorado Mountains, to the coastlines of Cornwall and South Devon, before being completed on Scotland’s East Coast by the Firth of Forth.

“The idea is to transport the listener to a place where the everyday ups and downs of the world dissipate, leaving the mind free to wander through a colourful, omnidirectional guitar and synth driven musical landscape for a while, landing eventually, hopefully freshly charged, with a smile and a calmer spirit.”

The music was written, programmed, mixed and performed by Ed, with mastering by Adam Goodlet at Re:Creation studios, with artwork designed by prolific English psychedelic illustrator John Hurford.

The Best of Pink Floyd has its share of idiosyncrasies, quirks evident right from the choice of the moody “Hey You” as the set’s opener. “Hey You” might not be an ideal keynote song but it is certainly one of Floyd’s signature songs, something that can’t be said of every one of the 16 songs here, the oddest choices being “The Happiest Days of Our Lives” (used as an extended intro for “Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2”) and “The Fletcher Memorial Home” (an album cut from the un-beloved The Final Cut). Apart from these tunes, A Foot in the Door serves up the expected five cuts from Dark Side of the Moon, three from Wish You Were Here, four from The Wall (of the big radio staples, “Run Like Hell” and “Young Lust” are absent), adding the early Syd Barrett “See Emily Play” and the latter-day “High Hopes” and “Learning to Fly” almost as afterthoughts. Although the compilation could withstand some minor tweaks a post-Syd song like “One of These Days” would have been welcome, for instance this is still a very worthy compilation of (most of) the Floyd songs everybody knows by heart.
