Although a dozen years have passed since Tartit released their much-acclaimed album Abacabok back in 2006, the group remain steadfast in their mission to spread the message of love, peace and the political conditions of the Tuareg people. Amankor / The Exile is a return to their hypnotic best, with heartfelt songs full of nostalgia for their homeland and a call for solidarity and a united approach towards reconciliation. Recorded live at Akan Studio in Bamako, the album has a raw and authentic edge true to the band’s musical ethos.
Originally created to safeguard the Tuareg traditional music which was slowing disappearing, Tartit’s members all originated from the Timbuktu region and formed the group whilst in exile between Mauritanian and Burkinabe…

…refugee camps in the mid-90s during the Tuareg uprising. Fast forward a quarter of a century, and with the help of friends and aid agencies the band have played all around the world at many of the biggest world music festivals in Europe, North America & beyond, and have achieved iconic status as guardians of Tuareg music. With their traditional instrumentation and repertoire their music speaks directly to the issues of today, seeking to preserve a culture under attack.

Tartit translates as “union”, a fitting title for a band made up of members from all levels of society, singing, dancing and playing music alongside each other. Led by the charismatic singer Fadimata Walet Oumar known as ‘Disco’, the band is made up of four women singers accompanying their vocals with cyclic percussive rhythms, and five veiled male instrumentalists, adding guitars, flute, ngoni, and giving a modern and contemporary nuance to the hypnotic and trance inducing call-and-response songs and ballads.

Being a female fronted band, Amankor / The Exile offers a unique perspective on Tuareg life through a woman’s eyes on songs such as ‘Tiliaden N’Asahara’ translated as ‘The Girls Of The Sahara’, which depicts the hardships of daily life, and how despite the lack of water, education and healthcare they still love the Sahara and ask for the world to help revive it. In Tuareg society women enjoy equal rights to men, and their importance in looking after the family is the subject of ‘Tamat / The Woman’ which warns how ‘The woman is the central pillar of the tent, and if the pillar falls, the whole tent will fall.’ A short a cappella song, ‘Haoua’ is a heartfelt lamentation of a mother who was robbed of cattle in the absence of her son, bringing home the life or death existence that is living in the Sahara.

Nostalgia is very much a central theme of the album with ‘Asaharaden’ being a reminiscence about how the Sahara was once peaceful and wondrous before becoming divided by war. Despite these deep regrets for what has been lost, Tartit remains a beacon of hope for the Tuareg people and offers hope for a brighter future on the album opener ‘Afous Dafous’ meaning ‘Hand In Hand’, a song inspired by a children’s game that encourages unity and solidarity. No other track epitomises everything the band represents more than ‘Tanminak’ with the words “We share the same land, we have to be united, so let’s reconcile”, being a message that these ambassadors of Tuareg traditional culture continue to spread far and wide.

Έφυγε χθες από τη ζωή ο Γιώργος Καρυπίδης, ένας από τους ελάχιστους έλληνες σκηνοθέτες της γενιάς του (για να μην πω ο μοναδικός) που μπορούσαν να συλλογιστούν πάνω στο δίπολο πραγματικό-φανταστικό με αναμφισβήτητα καλλιτεχνικά αποτελέσματα. Έχω δει τρεις ταινίες τού Καρυπίδη στις αίθουσες, τις Επικίνδυνο Παιχνίδι (1982), Στη Σκιά του Φόβου (1988) και Μαγεμένοι (1995) και μπορώ να πω πως οι δύο πρώτες παραμένουν μεταξύ των κορυφαίων ελληνικών υπαρξιακών-καφκικών θρίλερ (πέραν από στυλ και εποχές). Ειδικά το Στη Σκιά του Φόβου βάζει γυαλιά στο πρόσφατο… weird greek cinema.

Ο Γιώργος Κώνστας (φωτογραφία), ένας εξαιρετικός ηθοποιός, που χάθηκε σχετικά νέος, είναι ένας μουσικός, που συλλαμβάνεται και ανακρίνεται με την κατηγορία της παραχάραξης. Κάποια στιγμή αφήνεται «ελεύθερος» και τότε αρχίζει το προσωπικό ταξίδι του στον κόσμο των ενοχών (αληθινών ή κατασκευασμένων από τον ίδιο κανείς δεν ξέρει) και των ψευδαισθήσεων, ενώ εκείνοι που τον διώκουν (στην πράξη ή στη φαντασία του;) εξακολουθούν να παρακολουθούν κάθε βήμα του. Ο φόβος τον κατακυριεύει και τον εκμηδενίζει – έναν φόβο, τον οποίον οι αρχές ελέγχουν εκ του μακρόθεν, ανεβάζοντας και πραΰνοντας την έντασή του κατά το δοκούν, βαθαίνοντας πάντα την τάφρο ανάμεσα στον εξουσιαστή και τον εξουσιαζόμενο. Η ταινία είχε αποθεωθεί στο Φεστιβάλ Θεσσαλονίκης 1988, λαμβάνοντας 7 βραβεία (καλύτερης ταινίας, σκηνοθεσίας, α’ ανδρικού ρόλου, φωτογραφίας, μουσικής, σκηνογραφίας και ΠΕΚΚ καλύτερης ταινίας), περνώντας όμως απαρατήρητη στις αίθουσες. Κρίμα, πολύ κρίμα, να αγνοείται ακόμη και σήμερα.

Έξοχη ταινία ήταν και το Επικίνδυνο Παιχνίδι (1982) με τον Άρη Ρέτσο και τη Ζωή Λάσκαρη στους πρώτους ρόλους (ο κορυφαίος ρόλος της Λάσκαρη στο σινεμά – και δεν το λέω επειδή την αντιπαθώ ως Στεφανία κ.λπ. στα σίξτις). Η ταινία δομείται πάνω στην επικοινωνία του «είναι» με το «μη είναι». Ό,τι βλέπουμε συνέβη στην πραγματικότητα ή δεν συνέβη; Υπάρχει φόνος ή ατύχημα; Βλέπουμε ένα όνειρο ή ένα όνειρο μέσα σ’ ένα άλλο όνειρο, άρα ένα όνειρο που εξελίσσεται μέσα σε κάτι αληθινό; Μ’ ένα εκπληκτικό σκηνοθετικό εύρημα στην αρχή και στο τέλος του φιλμ (εκεί όπου εμφανίζεται η θεία του κεντρικού ήρωα, η Μαρίκα Νέζερ, που πάσχει υποτίθεται από γεροντική άνοια) ο Καρυπίδης δίνει καίρια και μαγικά την απάντηση. Τον ήρωα δεν τον θυμάται ούτε η θεία του! Άρα υπάρχει ή δεν υπάρχει; Ο ίδιος ο κινηματογράφος, εξάλλου, είναι το πιο μεγάλο ψέμα!

Δεν θυμάμαι τους τελευταίους πολλούς μήνες να έχει μπει κάποιος ελληνικός δίσκος στη λίστα με τα 30 ακριβότερα, που πουλιούνται κάθε μήνα στο discogs. Οι έλληνες πωλητές μπορεί να ζητάνε τη… μάνα τους και τον πατέρα τους για τα λεγόμενα «σπάνια» ελληνικά LP και singles, αλλά ελάχιστα απ’ αυτά πουλιούνται, τελικά, σε υψηλές τιμές. Η πλειονότητα μένει απούλητη. Ας πρόσεχαν…

Το πρώτο 45άρι του Νταλάρα όμως, από το 1967 (που το υπογράφει ως… Νταράλας), στη μικρή εταιρεία Αυλός, πουλήθηκε προσφάτως 1363 δολάρια (περίπου 1200 ευρώ) και έπιασε τη θέση 20 στη λίστα των «ακριβότερων» του περασμένου Νοεμβρίου.

Πέθανε ο γάλλος συνθέτης Michel Legrand στα 87 του. To “You Must Believe in Spring” [Polydor, 1974] είναι ο ωραιότερος τζαζ δίσκος με τραγούδια του. Βασικά, δεν είναι δίσκος του Michel Legrand, αλλά της κορυφαίας νορβηγίδας τραγουδίστριας Karin Krog. Λεπτομέρειες… μεγάλης όμως σημασίας.
Εδώ ακούμε πάντως μιαν εκπληκτική διασκευή σ’ ένα θρυλικό τραγούδι του…

Ευάγγελος Αβέρωφ-Τοσίτσας, θρυλικός έλλην… γλωσσολόγος και διακεκριμένος γιέσμαν-ατλαντιστής, ο οποίος εν έτει 1959 (όπως ελάλησεν απόψε και ο Τσίπρας) απεφάνθη τα γνωστά περί «μακεδονικής γλώσσας», «γραμματικής» και «συντακτικού» (ομνύοντας υπέρ Γιάνκηδων, οίτινες έγλειφαν για ίδια συμφέροντα τον αποστάτη Τίτο), προβλέποντας περαιτέρω τη διάλυση του κομμουνιστικού μπλοκ ου μην αλλά και της ίδιας της Γιουγκοσλαβίας, δημιουργώντας και… επιστημονικά τετελεσμένα.

Ναι, ο Ευάγγελος Αβέρωφ-Τοσίτσας είχε προβλέψει και τον θάνατο του Τίτο…
