When running down the names of notable and somewhat recent Cuban exports in the jazz realm, Alfredo Rodriguez and Pedrito Martinez both rank at the top of the list. Rodriguez, a conservatory trained pianist with a strong familial connection to the aural arts, came under the wing of the great Quincy Jones back in 2006. He made his way to the United States three years later and began taking the world by storm when he delivered his stunning debut — Sounds of Space (2012). Martinez, a percussionist reared on the street scene in Havana, arrived stateside just over a decade earlier than Rodriguez. He quickly vaulted to the top of his peer group, besting a talented bunch to take top honors at the Thelonious Monk Institute’s Afro-Latin Hand Drum Competition, appearing in…

…the critically-acclaimed documentary Calle 54, co-founding the band Yerba Buena, and racking up an extensive list of sideman credits with everybody from Paquito D’Rivera to Paul Simon. He’s since become a widely respected leader in his own right, most recently delivering a pair of celebrated albums on the Motéma Music imprint.

Joining forces for the aptly named Duologue, these two men live up to their respective reputations. Percussive perspicacity, harmonic sophistication, vocal grace and melodic purity stand as one when these virtuoso artists get going. The music that they create in collaboration speaks both to a folkloric sweep and modernist thrust. But whether they’re calling on the spirits or calculating a danceable design, there remains a single-mindedness driving this two-man vehicle. The title track, for example, is aural actuation at its finest. Martinez plays as a section of one, completely filling out the sound while Rodriguez’s fingers flit. Elsewhere, this pair plugs directly into cultural outlets. With the classic “El Punto Cubano,” the duo looks south; on “Mariposa,” Rodriguez’s woolgathering serves as a connection to his past while Martinez works in low gear; and through “Africa,” all of the dots connect place to place and time to space in dynamic fashion.

While this music is a clear acknowledgement of personal history and pathways, it also allows for Rodriguez and Martinez to make broader connections to popular culture. And with Jones in the picture, co-producing the record, it shouldn’t come as too great a surprise that there’s a pair of nods toward that ideal. A retooled “Thriller” comes early, touching on Q’s weight while highlighting the arranging skills of the duo. And further on, a smart take on the theme from the Super Mario Bros. 3 video game shows up to match wonder and whimsy. Rodriguez and Martinez may both have strong personalities, but each is comfortable flexing to support the other. That’s evident throughout this absorbing duologue. — AllAboutJazz

Designed as an accompaniment to Tim Lawrence’s brilliant 2017 book of the same name, “Life and Death on the New York Dancefloor” offers a snapshot of one of the most significant periods in the history of NYC dance music. It focuses on a four-year period between 1980 and ’83, when the city’s various musical scenes mixed and mutated at a dizzying rate. Lawrence’s selections are spot on, with mutant disco classics by the likes of Dinosaur L, David Byrne and Material being joined by Latino electro-funk (Johnny Dynell, Mark Kamins remixing Manchester band Quando Quango), early hip-hop (Rammellzee Vs K-Rob), new wave (Tuxedomoon, Alan Vega), post-punk rock (3 Teens Kill 4), proto-house (Larry Levan side project Peech Boys) and dub disco (August Darnell remixing James White & The Blacks).

Bjørn Berge is a Norwegian artist that makes Rock music with Blues influences. His previous album released in 2013 and this year he return with a brand new album.

This album is the first time he did not work alone. Although sometimes it appears minimalistic, the whole has a complete sound. Where you could easily feel it being to calm the warmth that lays into the atmosphere of the music is making it easy to keep on board. Some influences of different genres give some shape to the vocals of Bjørn, the black feel is thickened. “Mr Bones”, for example, can truly bring a smile to your face for it being an entertaining track.
Then you run into a ballad. “Bitter Sweet” is a track that changes the vibe. Remarkable and full of feeling it is one track that stands out on the release. And switching it of with some more tempo on “Speed of Light” brings you some contrast, a surprise that bends it all again.

Eventually the album closes with the more energetic “The Sun’s Going Down” in which you grasp the essence of it all. A summarize that concludes the who album and gives you the image of who Bjørn is: “Who Else?”.

Last time we caught up with Wille And The Bandits it was at Giants Of Rock 2017 when they were touring Steal (2017) – a stormer of a blues /rock roots album. So it’s apt the first date on their Paths 2019 promotional tour will be a reappearance at Minehead.

What separates the band from the crowd is Wille Edwards’ electrifying lap steel, dobro, and electric Weissenborn playing which gives a unique rootsiness to their modus operandi. And with Steal they seemed to have overcome their tendency to ‘experiment’, with their previous album (Grow (2013)), by their own admission, maybe a little too diverse.

The album comes out of the traps at a frenetic pace with the anthemic ‘One Way’. It’s a song with a great chorus line, and one that should translate well to the stage even if, on record, it feels a little over hurried.

‘Make Love’ stylistically harks back to the days of Cream, and along with ‘Victim Of The Night’ has shades of Lynott in Edwards’ gravelly vocals. The latter, in particular, benefits from a mid-section break of pace, allowing space for some tasteful guitar/keys interplay.

The slower ballad ‘Four Million Days’, is shelter from the storm, but then the desire to go ‘off piste’ strikes with the ‘Ed Sheeran meets The Police’ ‘Chakra’, and the hip hop/rap/ funk experimentation of ‘Keep It On The Down-low’.

Ironically, where they do strike motherlode is with the late night groove of ‘How Long’. Restrained, moody and slow burning, it’s a set highlight by a clear margin with some lovely bass playing from Matt Brooks.

Dünya Savaşı’nda Nazi istilası sürecinde Paris’teki caz grupları kulüplerden sürüldü ancak toplum buna rağmen eğlence istiyordu. Bundan dolayı kulüpler yeraltına aktı ve loş bodrumlarda plakçalar ve hoparlörler öncülüğünde eğlenilmeye başlandı. Savaş bir şekilde sonuca varıp bitince canlı performans sağlayan kulüpler tekrar hayata geçti, aman buna rağmen seyircilere plak çalma alışkanlığı ve konsepti var olmayı sürdürdü. Amerika’da 1960’larda açılan “Le Club”, “L’interdit”, “Il Mio Club” ve “Shepheards” adlı kulüpler sayesinde diskotek kavramı ilk defa günümüz anlamıyla sözlüklere yerleşti. Sonrası ise müzik tarihinde derin bir açıklamaya gebe bir kültür haline geldi. Her ne kadar günümüzde eskisi gibi diskotek kavramı olmasa bile bu kelimenin karizması hala varlığını sürdürmekte.
