Ramblin’ Jack Elliott – Friends of Mine (1998)

Ramblin’ Jack Elliott’s first album for Hightone, Friends of Mine, is a thoroughly enjoyable collection of duets (and one trio) produced by Roy Rogers. There’s a loose, intimate atmosphere on Friends of Mine that is instantly appealing, and his selection of singing partners — Emmylou Harris and Nanci Griffith, Peter Rowan, Tom Waits, John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker, Arlo Guthrie, Rosalie Sorrels, Guy Clark, and Bob Weir — is smart, since each singer helps bring out the best in Elliott. It’s an excellent latter-day effort from Elliott that confirms his status as a legendary folksinger.

Tracks:
01 Ridin’ Down the Canyon – (with Arlo Guthrie)
02 Me and Billy the Kid – (with Peter Rowan)
03 Last Letter – (with Rosalie Sorrels)
04 Louise – (with Tom Waits)
05 Rex’s Blues – (with Emmylou Harris/Nanci Griffith)
06 Walls of Red Wing – (with John Prine)
07 Hard Travelin’ – (with Jerry Jeff Walker)
08 He Was a Friend of Mine – (with Jerry Jeff Walker)
09 Dark as a Dungeon – (with Guy Clark)
10 Friend of the Devil – (with Bob Weir)
11 Reason to Believe
12 Bleeker Street Blues
13 Old Time Feeling – (with Tom Waits/Guy Clark)

Eric Brace, Peter Cooper & Thomm Jutz – Riverland (2019)

Eric Brace and Peter Cooper have a history of creating carefully crafted concept album. With guitarist Thomm Jutz again aboard, the acoustic triumvirate are on a roll. “C & O Canal” was terrific. “Riverland” may be even a little better. The lineup is a little larger too. Mark Fain (upright bass), Lyn Williams (drums), Mike Compton (mandolin) and Tammy Rogers (fiddle) join as well as banjoists Terry Baucom and Justin Moses on two tracks each.

The subject is not only the Mississippi River, but the state, too. Cooper and Brace are musicologists steeped in the history of rural music, folk music, and just about anything that qualifies as “roots.” Jutz is an amazing acoustic guitarist and composer (credited on 11 of 14). So, even though none of the three grew up in Mississippi, count on their research. More importantly, they are fascinated by the place and it comes across.

There are 13 originals and one intriguing cover, penned by bootleg preacher Rev. Will D. Campbell, who spent his life working for equality and racial justice. He befriended poets, prophets and pugilists including Tom T. Hall, Martin Luther King Jr. and Muhammad Ali. His mostly spoken word tune, “Mississippi Magic” is the fulcrum around which the album revolves.

In their signature style, the trio regales with terrific stories, some based on history and others just plain fiction. The Great Flood of 1927 is addressed in “Drowned and Washed Away.” The twilight years of legendary keelboat man Mike Fink are lamented in “King of the Keelboat Men” with its polar opposite “To Be a Steamboat Man” that comes later. The adventures of a traveling mule (“Southern Mule”) and Gen. Ulysses S. Grant’s plan to change the world by taking Vicksburg, Miss. (“Down Along the River”) are among the many highlights. Still, it’s best to listen in sequence as the closing tune, penned by Lutz and Rogers, “Mississippi, Rest My Soul” is the perfect southern gospel hymn.

For the background on the songs as well as the lyrics, look no further than the detailed booklet accompanying the CD and read along while listening. Brace, Cooper, and Jutz are simply among the best storytellers we have.

a%2Bjazz%2Bverionis.jpg

Ustad Saami – God Is Not a Terrorist (2019)

Ustad Saami…75-year-old, Ustad Saami risks his life daily in Pakistan to keep alive his microtonal, pre-Islamic, multilingual (Farsi, Sanskrit, Hindi, the ancient and dead language of Vedic, gibberish, Arabic, and Urdu) music. Handed down by his ancestors for over a thousand years, he is the only practitioner of Surti left in the world and when he passes, this music will die with him as well. Extremists resent his work as they do anything else pre-dating Muhammad.
In the land where Osama Bin last hid, Master Ustad Naseeruddin Saami has spent his entire life mastering the nuances of every given note. It has been said that India always had a region where all of the greatest singers came from. And that place is Pakistan.

109 MB  320 ** FLAC

One of just nine countries in the world to possess nuclear arms and the only Islamic nation to do so, the Pakistani state is so feared that the US government does not allows its staff to stay in hotels anywhere in the entire country. Any hotel— about as daunting a travel warning as could be issued.

…“To sing is to listen.” These are the words of the master. The translation of his own last name, Saami, even means “to hear.”

For him, everything centers on one note. From that, all else grows and music is seen as a sixth sense for people to better communicate with each other. With great precision, Saami utilizes 49-notes versus the West’s mere seven. The scale was founded by a mix-raced royal whose lifelong endeavor was to make peace with duality through art. That predecessor of Qawwali music is called Khayál, the Arabic word for “imagination” and in it the melody carries the meaning. The lyrics are almost incidental during these call-and-responses.

But today neophyte, urbane media-moguls tell the master that he doesn’t know how to sing since his notes fail to align on a sanitized and dumbed-down grid. Engineers are unable to see his notes on their Pro Tools system, so they assume that it is the artist not the machine that is mistaken. But it is the uneven pitches that the master values as being the most searching, while those with even numbers too stable.

A compounding cultural force is that extremists are driving the music out of Islam, viewing it as having no place in a righteous society. So now the five calls to prayer blasted over intercoms around the clock are harsh and off-pitch. Harmonium, the instrument that is now so strongly associated with the region, was actually introduced by missionaries and banned from the radio until 1962. That was D-Day culturally for Pakistan. The instrument restricted music to off/on keys, excluding all other possibilities.

…Pakistan was created by the largest mass migration in history as Muslims and non-Muslims swapped sides of the border. Most westward migrants ended-up in the port city of Karachi with the promise that they would eventually be relocated and integrated throughout Pakistan. But that promise remains unfulfilled and these relative newcomers remain cordoned off in the city, forming micro-regions that reflect wherever they migrated from in India before first alighting.

The master shapes the notes with his hands as he sings like conducting a Theremin. Most master’s now hide their knowledge, possessively passing their skills down through family only. Subsequently, traditions have died and wither. Master Saami’s mission is to share his knowledge with the world, so that the music may live on freely.

With the musician’s tongues reddened and teeth devastated from chewing Paan, we recorded all night long taking only a short break for a meal. In the morning after the sun had come up, the younger players were understandably collapsing from exhaustion. The master, though, displayed markedly more energy than when we had begun the night before. He urged the others to keep going, but was unsuccessful. His power proved too much for them to keep up with

Fleetwood Mac – Transmission Impossible (2018)

This spectacular 3 x CD set features some of the finest live shows ever performed by Fleetwood Mac! Formed in London in 1967, Fleetwood Mac have gone through as many personnel changes across the last 50 years as any band from that era still in existence. And although two members from the start still remain on board in the shape of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, and Christine Perfect (later McVie s wife, after which she adopted his name) joined in 69, the biggest change came when Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joined Mac in 1975. This spectacular 3 x CD set features some of the finest live shows ever performed by Fleetwood Mac, kicking off with a performance the newly-augmented band gave in December 1977 in Tokyo, Japan, some 10 months after the release of their classic Rumours LP. Next up is a gig played at the Inglewood Forum in California in October 1982, hot on the heels of their Mirage album, released a little earlier that year. The set is concluded with a large scale show the band gave in Sydney, while on their 1990 Beyond The Mask tour. Featuring too a number of bonus cuts from some early television appearances, this delightful CD set will no doubt become a must-have item for fans of the band everywhere!

Ivan ‘Mamão’ Conti – Poison Fruit (2019)

0
0

Ivan ContiFrom an artist in their seventies, you probably wouldn’t expect to hear an album like this. But Brazilian drumming legend Ivan ‘Mamão’ Conti has been experimenting and innovating for the last half a century. As one third of cult Rio jazz-funk trio Azymuth, Mamão was at the root of the group’s ‘samba doido’ (crazy samba) philosophy, which warped the traditional samba compass with jazz influences and space age electronics. Even with his lesser known jovem guarda group The Youngsters, Mamão was experimenting with tapes and delays to create unique, ahead-of-its-time sounds, way back in the sixties. More recently Mamão recorded an album with hip-hop royalty Madlib under the shared moniker ‘Jackson Conti’.
With his first album in over twenty years,…

160 MB  320 ** FLAC

…and the first to be released on vinyl since his 1984 classic The Human Factor, Mamão shares his zany carioca character across eleven tracks of rootsy electronic samba and tripped out jazz, beats and dance music. Featuring Alex Malheiros and Kiko Continentino on a number of tracks, the Azymuth lifeblood runs deep, but venturing into the modern discotheque (as Mamão would call it), Poison Fruit also experiments with sounds more commonly associated with house and techno, with the help of London based producer Daniel Maunick (aka Dokta Venom) and Mamão’s son Thiago Maranhão.

a%2Bjazz%2Btsatsarwnis.jpg

John Mayall’s earliest recordings with Eric Clapton, Mick Fleetwood, Jack Bruce, Peter Green, Mick Taylor and John McVie from the sixties as well as Mayall’s other recorded work through 1974 have been issued on the 4-CD box set “So Many Roads: An Anthology 1964-1974”. The anthology collects tracks recorded during a period when Mayall released 10 albums each on Decca and Polydor. The 74 vintage tracks are newly digitally remastered from the original master tapes. The box set also features a 40-page booklet with liner notes and previously unpublished photographs.

The first two discs cover the Decca albums from 1964 to 1968: “Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton”; “A Hard Road” and “Crusade” featuring Peter Green; and “Bare Wires” and “Blues From Laurel Canyon” featuring Mick Taylor, plus tracks taken from non-album singles and EPs. The Decca period ranges from Mayall’s first recordings, “Crawling Up A Hill” and “Mr. James,” to gems with Clapton such as “All Your Love” and “Parchman Farm,” to the quintessential Sixties flashback “Miss James.” The third and fourth discs are devoted to Mayall’s Polydor recordings from 1969 and 1974, when Mayall was essentially living and recording in America.

Ποιος είναι όμως ο Reinhold Friedl;
a%2Bjazz%2Bfriedl.jpg
Το “Music for Piano,…
