Carolina Blue – I Hear Bluegrass Calling Me (2019)
320 kbps | 103 MB | LINKS
The time has finally come, as Bluegrass band Carolina Blue releases their highly-anticipated new project, I Hear Bluegrass Calling Me. Released via Pinecastle Records, the album includes 13 new recordings, and serves as the group’s third full-length LP.
“This album is a culmination of about 12 years of hard work. Our goal has always been to preserve the music created by Bill Monroe, while carving out our own niche with original material,” says Carolina Blue member Bobby Powell. “Some of these songs were written years ago, while some are brand new and we hope you will enjoy them all! Many thanks to Lonnie Lassiter, Ethan Burkhardt, and all the folks at Pinecastle Records for taking a chance on Carolina Blue and giving us the freedom to offer our bluegrass music as we interpret it and for working so hard on our behalf. I hope you will all enjoy I Hear Bluegrass Calling Me!”
The lead single, “Rusty Rails” has already began generating buzz. The track has already climbed into the Top 5 on Roots Music Report’s ‘Top 50 Traditional Bluegrass Song Chart.’ Ahead of the official release, the album has already stormed its way into the Top Ten of the ‘Traditional Bluegrass Album Chart,’ where it continues to rise. “Rusty Rails” was written by band members Bobby Powell and Timmy Jones, and is centered-around all of the abandoned railroad tracks in the singer’s hometown of Brevard, N.C.
The collection has also gotten the attention of fellow Bluegrass alum, with Grand Ole Opry legend Bobby Osborne saying, “Listening to Carolina Blue’s new album, I Hear Bluegrass Calling Me, takes me back to when I first saw Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys at Memorial Hall in Dayton, Ohio when Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs were a part of his band.” He adds, “I appreciate their efforts to keep bluegrass down to Earth, but is their own style. I look forward to seeing how far they go.”
The full I Hear Bluegrass Calling Me project has several highlights, including the opening title track. Carolina Blue’s distinct instrumentations are on full display as the group takes their picking to a new level. Another standout moment occurs on the track, “Longing for Home” which tells the story of returning home, detailing thoughts and memories associated with the visit which takes a trip down memory lane. The thought-provoking video for the song is slated for release next week.
“Since Bobby and I started this band, we have been committed to persevering with bluegrass music in the format that Bill Monroe created it to be,” adds Carolina Blue member Timmy Jones. “In order to honor the Father of bluegrass, we vow to stay true to the high lonesome sound and hope to keep giving our friends and fans what they want, with our traditional vamp! Always listen… the bluegrass will be calling!”

Khana Bierbood – Strangers from the Far East (2019)
On their latest album, Khana Bierbood call themselves Strangers from the Far East, but there’s something strangely familiar about the Thai quintet’s debut LP. Throwing garage rock, surf, and psychedelic pop into one delightfully lo-fi mix, the seven-track album recalls the warm, radiating vibes of the ’60s and early ’70s, yet the consistent influence of traditional music from Thailand serves to inject its common inspirations with a refreshingly uncommon edge.
Charmingly retro tracks like “Jeanmaryn” and “Plankton Bloom” are full of the echoing guitars, wistful harmonies, and perky bass you’d expect from a summery, surf-tinged indie album. But the inclusion of airy keyboards and non-Western scales makes the condensed pop…
…Khana Bierbood offer sound much stranger and more transportive than it has any right to be.
The harmonious marrying of East and West may be the most immediate feature of Strangers from the Far East, but what’s most rewarding about the album is just how well-constructed and compelling its tracks are. Given that Khana Bierbood had been a band for seven years before releasing the record, their songwriting prowess shouldn’t be much of a surprise, but their tuneful and infectious guitar pop feels like a revelation nonetheless.
The floating, wide-eyed melodies of “Starshine” linger long after the album’s close, while the raw twang and shimmering vibrato of “Bad Trip” carries an underlying groove that’s hard to resist. And even though it might be odd to imagine a Thailand-based band playing music with California roots, the impression left by Strangers from the Far East is that the infusion of traditional Thai influences has helped to give a familiar genre like surf music new life.
