sierra-leone-music-inside-left-detail

It is a collector from 1988, it contains a range of songs in
various styles and by various artists from Sierra Leone.
Some of the recordings sound very dusty but that’s just
the way they are. Track #9 concerns a church song, not
my cup of tea but I left it. After that it’s mainly field recor-
dings. I’ll be honest, for me it’s only about track one
to eight and fourteen..

Daarna vinden we voornamelijk
‘field’ opnamen.

a%2Bjazz%2Bdespw.jpg

VA – Africa Airways Five: Brace Brace Boogie 1976-1982 (2019)

Africa Airways FiveFifth release in Africa Seven’s premiere compilation series, Africa Airways features boogie tracks from the likes of The Black Bells Group, Dikalo and Mekongo President representing Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana, and more. The 10-track compilation follows Africa Airways Four: Disco Funk Touchdown 1976-1983.
“We up the boogie time groove with The Black Bells Group (the first band of lead singer Sidney ‘Patrick Duteil’ who went on to become the godfather of French hip-hop and a well know TV presenter. Here the groove is swinging… the perfect opener. Next up is German-based Cameroonian musician and cousin of Manu Dibango, Charly Kingson with this bass-synth boogie stomper. Big brass and jazzy trumpets add layers of sparkle too.

95 MB  320 ** FLAC

Next its time for some highlife inspired boogie from Ghanian Gyedu Blay Amboley. Highlife fused with reggae, disco, boogie and jazz just as the lyrics say.

Next we pair up with Africa Seven friend Eko once more under his Dikalo guise. The Cameroonian master musician is on fine form with his heavy brass and deep percussion with a driving afro boogie groove. To round off Side A its off to Cameroon again to groove with Jean ‘Mekongo President’. Think Bernard ‘Chic’ Edwards on the bass with some African style and you can see it’s the bottom end groove and afrobeat drums that power this gem along.

We open the second side slowly and purposefully with the highly sought after ‘French Girl’ from Fotso. Drippy bass synth grooves and a wondrous percussion and drum shuffle pair with piano riffs to make this a unique sounding track. Our friend Tala AM is next with the foot-stomping ‘Sugar Lump’. JK Mandengue is next with most definitely the catchiest chorus you will hear today. Nigerian Jide Obe gets synth and clavinet rich with his doe to sensible dating advice ‘Too Young’. We close off the album with a track from label good friend Jo Bisso under his Mulamba guise.”

David Bowie – David Bowie (1967/2019)

David Bowie’s first ever LP the 1967 set that introduced the world to the likes of “Rubber Band” and “There Is a Happy Land” is an intriguing collection, as much in its own right as for the light it sheds on Bowie’s future career. Nobody hearing “She’s Got Medals,” for instance, can fail to marvel at the sheer prescience displayed by a song about gender-bending. Even within Bowie’s subsequent world of alligators, starmen, and astronettes, however, there are no parallels for the likes of “Please Mr. Gravedigger,” with its storm-swept lament for a murdered little girl, or “Uncle Arthur,” the archetypal mommy’s boy, whose one stab at snapping the apron strings shatters when he realizes his new love cannot cook. There’s also a frightening glimpse into future Bowie universes, served up by “We Are Hungry Men,” a tale of a world in which food is so scarce that the people have resorted to cannibalism. Not all of the songs are such sharp observations of human frailties and failings, while the distinctly family-entertainment style arrangements make it clear that, whatever audience Bowie was aiming for, rock fans were not included among them. But songs like “Love You Till Tuesday” and “Maid of Bond Street” have a catchy irresistibility to them all the same, and though this material has been repackaged with such mind-numbing frequency as to seem all but irrelevant today, David Bowie still remains a remarkable piece of work. And it sounds less like anything else he’s ever done than any subsequent record in his catalog.

Smokin’ Joe Kubek’s debut album is a delight. Kubek leads his band through a set of smoking hot Texas and Memphis blues, delivered with passion they can play this music with precision, but they choose to be looser and more fun than most traditionalists. Kubek’s a skillful guitarist and B’Nois King, his vocalist and rhythm guitarist, can play nearly as well and their duels are the high watermark of an already wonderful album.

Most closely associated with his atmospheric 1976 smash “Dream Weaver,” singer Gary Wright was born April 26, 1943 in Creskill, NJ; a former child actor who appeared on Broadway in a production of Fanny, he fronted a number of local rock bands during his high school years before turning his attention to psychology, completing his studies in Berlin at Frei University. In 1967, Wright’s band, the New York Times, opened for Traffic, bringing him to the attention of Island Records honcho Chris Blackwell, who in turn introduced the singer to the members of the band Art; relocating to London, Wright joined the band, soon renamed Spooky Tooth and later emerging among the UK’s premier hard rock outfits. When Spooky Tooth temporarily disbanded in 1970, Wright jumped ship to form Wonderwheel, concurrently playing keyboards on George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass; the two eventually became close friends and collaborators, together taking a trip to India which inspired the mystical themes of Wright’s subsequent solo efforts. He returned to Spooky Tooth in 1973, but when the band again dissolved the following year he returned to his solo career, scoring his greatest success with 1975’s The Dream Weaver; both the title track and “Love Is Alive” reached number two on the Billboard pop charts, and the album — one of the first created solely via synthesizer technology — achieved platinum status. Follow-ups including Light of Smiles, 1977’s Touch and Gone, and 1979’s Headin’ Home failed to repeat The Dream Weaver’s success, however, and in 1981 Wright notched his final chart hit with “Really Wanna Know You,” from The Right Place. From there he composed a series of film scores, including 1985’s Fire and Ice, which topped the German charts; Wright’s first solo album in seven years, Who Am I, featured contributions from Indian classical greats Lakshmi Shankar and L. Subramanium. In 1991, he remade “Dream Weaver” for the soundtrack of the hit film comedy Wayne’s World, and in 1995 issued his first world music effort, First Signs of Life. Human Love followed five years later. ~ Jason Ankeny

Dead & Company – American Airlines Center, Dallas, TX 12/1/17 (2019)

f6j0y6wbxzuaa_300.jpg320 kbps | 406 MB | LINKS

For such a large and populous state, Texas was never one of the more frequent destinations on the Grateful Dead’s tour itinerary. The band only played 28 shows there during its 30 years of touring, with most of those appearances happening in the 1970s and none later than 1988. To compound the deprivation, as of 2017 various bands featuring Dead alumni had only made it to the state a handful of times in the ensuing two-plus decades. So, it’s not surprising that the roar you hear from the crowd as Dead & Company hits the stage for its Texas debut is as unrestrained and loud as it is. It’s the sound of Lone Star Dead Heads who have been waiting for something for a very long time. And the music that follows that rapturous reception is the sound of patience and anticipation richly rewarded. After setting the table with such popular items from the Dead songbook book as “Shakedown Street” and “Brown-Eyed Women,” the band pays homage to their host city with “Deep Elem Blues,” a song dating back to the 1930s about a neighborhood that looms large in the history of Dallas’ African American community, with Bob Weir, John Mayer and Oteil Burbridge taking turns on lead vocal. A couple of songs later there’s a nod to another part of Texas with Marty Robbins’ classic cowboy ballad “El Paso,” followed by a run of Grateful Dead originals to close out the first set: the sweet Garcia-Hunter tune “They Love Each Other,” with spirited ensemble playing appended to the coda, and then a funky mashup of “The Music Never Stopped” and “Easy Answers.” The second set is a feast of Dead favorites, starting with a “Here Comes Sunshine” that opens up to some high-energy jamming, and segues beautifully into “Scarlet Begonias” and “Fire On The Mountain,” which in turn seamlessly morphs into a hard-swinging “Eyes Of The World” that features spectacular guitar and keyboard trade-offs by John Mayer and Jeff Chimenti. Ethereal Drums and Space sequences carry us gently into the Beatles’ “Dear Prudence” then Garcia and Hunter’s “The Wheel” (with a reggae-flavored tag) and, to close the set, a wild “Casey Jones.” In an appropriate return to the Old West, the band encores with Bob Dylan’s gunfighter’s lament, “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door.”
