Progressive rock music emerged in the late 1960’s to challenge the boundaries of traditional rock & pop music. This saw a more eclectic range of musical influences being explored by bands composing their own material.

AUBREY SMALL formed in 1969 with a line-up that featured 5 part harmonies, twin guitars & flute which was quite pioneering for those times! Very soon they were attracting considerable interest in heady musical circles. Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club took the band under their management followed by numerous regular sessions on BBC Radio 1’s “Sounds of the Seventies” for Bob Harris & John Peel. The band were soon performing at landmark venues such as London’s Marquee, Flamingo, Samantha’s, Thatched Barn at Chalk Farm & the Roundhouse with Ronnie Scott’s becoming their “second home”. Tour gigs with major names including Status Quo, Supertramp, Edgar Broughton, Colosseum, Hawkwind, Pink Fairies, Robin Trower and many others were a growing part of the band’s new world.

Record companies were fast becoming aware of the band’s growing reputation and within a short time a recording contract was signed as well as a publishing contract with Radio Luxembourg MD Alan Keen of Louvigny Marquee, for their songs. An album was released in 1971 followed by a single some months later.

Although the band were together only four short years, they created a legacy of interest with the people their music reached, which has lasted until the present day. Recently unearthed long lost recorded material was returned to the band, prompting them to tell their short but colourful story.

Mastered from the original tapes recorded in 1969/70, Rabbits features the two SIREN singles Stride and Mandy Lee together with 18 previously unreleased tracks which show the range and power of Kevin Coyne at the beginning of his career. We hope you enjoy its bluesy style and Kevin’s fine singing.

The history of SIREN for those who were not around in 1969 is as follows: the band was formed early in 1969 by Dave Clague (working as a session musician after a spell with the notorious Bonzo Dog Band), Nick Cudworth (ex -Chelsea Art College and pounding the piano wherever he found it) and Kevin Coyne (working in a mental hospital in Lancashire).

Kevin and his family moved to London after a series of jams, rehearsals and demo sessions proved that it would work, and SIREN started gigs, writing and recording. Apearances included sessions for John Peel’s radio show, Top Gear, and regular spots at the Oval House, Kennington, The Round House, Chalk Farm, colleges & clubs.

The first album Siren was released on the Dandelion label later in 1969 and was ecstatically received by Rolling Stone and International Times. So, with encouragement from John Peel, Jac Holzman (who released the album on the Elektra label in the USA) and John Tobler of ZigZag magazine, they released a second album Strange Locomotion on the Dandelion label early in 1971.

Guest musicians on Rabbits include Mick Sweeney (guitar) and Colin Wood (piano), now established musicians in their own right.

Zoals beloofd vandaag als afsluiter van de Semana Brasileira nog een plaatje
van João Nogueira. We begonnen met een album van zijn zus Gisa. João maakte
een kleine twintig platen. Dit is de zesde en is genoemd naar de historische Samba
Club in Rio de Janeiro welke helaas niet meer bestaat. Ik heb enkele mooie video’s
gevonden waarop deze te zien is. Prachtige beelden met de grote João Nogueira
waarop ook Gisa te zien is. Kijk vooral verder en laat Youtube je
meenemen naar de mooiste samba’s ..

As promised earlier this past week, when posting the first record in our Semana
Brasileira, today we end with an album by João Nogueira. We started with his sister
Gisa. João made some twenty records. This is his sixth and was called after the
famous ‘Clube do Samba’ in Rio de Janeiro which unfortunately doesn’t exist
anymore. I found some nice video’s about it. We see both João and Gisa among
many others. Watch much more as Youtube takes you along the finest samba’s ..

Glen Travis Campbell (April 22, 1936 – August 8, 2017) was an American singer, guitarist, songwriter, television host, and actor. He was best known for a series of hit songs in the 1960s and 1970s, and for hosting a music and comedy variety show called The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour on CBS television, from January 1969 until June 1972. Εντάξει, είχαν πολλά δυνατά τραγούδια οι Talk Talk, αλλά με το “Such a shame” γινόταν ο πανικός στις ντίσκο, το καλοκαίρι στο νησί, στα μέσα του ’80. Φωνάρα ο άνθρωπος, και τραγουδάρα. RIP Mark Hollis...
[Όχι δε ρίχνω το “Such a shame”, αλλά ένα άλλο εξαιρετικό, το “Tomorrow started” με την τρομπέτα του Henry Lowther, μετά το 4ο λεπτό, που φύσαγε και για Caravan, Keef Hartley, Mayall κ.λπ. στα sixties-seventies]

Διαβάζω και ξαναδιαβάζω λόγια για ένα ελληνικό μουσικό ντοκιμαντέρ, σχετικό με το ροκ συγκρότημα Τα 4 Επίπεδα της Ύπαρξης, που θα προβληθεί στο Φεστιβάλ Ντοκιμαντέρ Θεσσαλονίκης.  

Δεν μπορώ να καταλάβω τι νόημα μπορεί να έχει ένα τέτοιο ντοκιμαντέρ, όταν δεν υπάρχει διαθέσιμο οπτικό υλικό εποχής. Να βάλουμε κάποιους μόνο να μιλάνε και να λένε ο ένας το μακρύ του και ο άλλος το κοντό του; Και δεν αναφέρομαι στα μέλη του γκρουπ εδώ (αλλά σε δημοσιογράφους, συλλέκτες κ.λπ.). Εκτός, αν βρέθηκαν τα βίντεο με τις εμφανίσεις του συγκροτήματος στην ΕΡΤ το 1976. Τότε πάω πάσο. Αλλά να μας το πείτε, αν έχει βρεθεί αρχειακό υλικό κι έχει ενσωματωθεί στο φιλμ. Να μη μας το κρύβετε. Γιατί, ταινία δεν μπορεί να γίνει μόνο με «σπανιότητες», Jay-Z και Ριάνες… Εκτός αν υπάρχουν συνεντεύξεις μ’ αυτά τα πρόσωπα, αλλά και πάλι δε φτάνει. Χωρίς αρχειακό υλικό πολύ δύσκολα μπορεί να σταθεί ένα μουσικό ντοκιμαντέρ.

Εκτός αν κάνεις στην άκρη, τώρα, τo ντοκιμαντέρ, που είναι πολύ στην ελληνική μόδα (γιατί έχει ελάχιστο κόστος… βάζεις κάποιους να μιλάνε και ρίχνεις και κανα τραγούδι από δίσκο) και γυρίσεις μουσική ταινία με υπόθεση. Σαν το Green Book ας πούμε που πήρε και το Όσκαρ Καλύτερης Ταινίας και που είναι βασισμένο σε μιαν αληθινή ιστορία, που αφορά στο μουσικό της τζαζ Don Shirley (στον αμερικάνικο Νότο, στη δεκαετία του ’60). Αν κι εκεί υπήρξαν παρατράγουδα εξ όσων διάβασα, αφού θίχτηκαν οι συγγενείς του πεθαμένου μουσικού. Anyway…
Τα μουσικά ντοκιμαντέρ, έτσι όπως γίνονται στην Ελλάδα, είναι μόνο για τη μούρη, και με ουσία από μηδαμινή έως ανύπαρκτη.
Για να σας δω με μια μουσική ταινία με υπόθεση τι πουλιά θα πιάσετε;

Πέθανε προχθές, στα 91 του, ο Ira Gitler ένας από τους πιο διάσημους τζαζ δημοσιογράφους και συγγραφείς (με ειδίκευση θα λέγαμε στις παλιές τζαζ δεκαετίες κυρίως του swing και του bebop). Μόνο και μόνο τις liner notes του να μαζέψεις από τα οπισθόφυλλα των εκατοντάδων τζαζ άλμπουμ για τα οποία έγραψε κείμενα (σίγουρα είναι πάνω από χίλια… και λίγα λέω), φτιάχνεις ένα από τα πιο σημαντικά τζαζ-βιβλία της Ιστορίας. Και υπάρχουν και τα βιβλία του αυτά καθ’ αυτά, όπως και τα άρθρα του στα μεγαλύτερα αμερικανικά (τζαζ) περιοδικά κι εφημερίδες. RIP

50 χρόνια Harvest συμπληρώνονται εφέτος κάποια στιγμή (πότε ακριβώς θα το ψάξω), 50 χρόνια για μια από τις σημαντικότερες ετικέτες του ροκ (και όχι μόνο του ροκ, και όχι μόνο του εγγλέζικου ροκ).

Θέλω να γράψω και κείμενο, αν με βγάλει ο χρόνος κάποια στιγμή, κάτι όχι δύσκολο, αφού θα έχω σαν μπούσουλα ξένες αναφορές (από ξένα περιοδικά), τις οποίες και θα ψιλο-αντιγράψω, χώνοντας, βεβαίως, και τα δικά μου ανάμεσα…

Οι… ποπ μετεωρολόγοι είναι το όνειδος της Μετεωρολογίας. Τους πρέπει άγρια επιτίμηση, γιατί δεν παραπλανούν μόνο τον κόσμο, με βιαστικές και άστοχες προβλέψεις, αλλά ντροπιάζουν, κατά μίαν έννοια, και την επιστήμη τους.
