The great singer and guitarist Barbara Lynn is a left-handed player from East Texas, and also one of the few female performers of the early Sixties to write most of her own material. Lynn’s music often straddled the line between blues and Southern R&B, and since much of her early work – including the #1 hit and soul stirrer “You’ll Lose a Good Thing” – was recorded in New Orleans, it bore the sonic imprint of the Crescent City.

This essential CD edition includes Barbara Lynn’s debut album, You’ll Lose a Good Thing, in its entirety. Originally issued by Jamie Records in 1962, this magnificent LP was produced by Louisiana-born Huey Meaux, an influential figure in Texas music circles. In addition to the original LP, this remastered collector’s release contains 11 bonus tracks, including a bunch of hard-to-find-sides from the same period.

Rhino’s five-disc box set Respect: A Century of Women in Music was surely assembled with the best of intentions, but it doesn’t quite work. First of all, any collection that focuses solely on “the female contribution” comes off as a little condescending, no matter how good the intentions are. Still, the concept has enough weight to make for at least an interesting listen. However, any compilation that spans nearly 100 years and every conceivable popular musical genre is bound not only to be incomplete, but too sweeping to be totally effective. The scope is impressive, as are the featured artists — think of any major female musician and they’re likely to be here, unless it’s Joni Mitchell (Kim Gordon and Kim Deal are also missing, as are several other similarly minded post-punk rockers and various pop and folk singer/songwriters, but no omission is as shocking as Mitchell’s) — but the overall effect is somewhat bewildering. Possibly that’s because the post-Beatles selections aren’t always spot-on — Patti Smith is represented by “People Have the Power” instead of any of her classic ’70s work; Liz Phair’s “Polyester Bride” is here instead of anything from Exile in Guyville; Fleetwood Mac is represented by Christine McVie rather than Stevie Nicks; and “Legs” is an odd choice for PJ Harvey — but Respect is ultimately undone because it bites off way more than it can chew. The first couple of discs work because, in a weird way, they’re working within their limitations — there’s a fairly distinct canon and not as many recordings to sample — but toward the end of disc two, the omissions, strange choices, and weird genre juxtapositions start to make themselves noticed. Make no mistake, there’s plenty of great music here, and for complete novices it will function as an introduction to some wonderful musicians. But as a historical document, Respect is too scattershot to instruct, and as a listening experience it’s too exhausting to absorb.

Yola Carter is a rising country-soul singer / songwriter from Bristol. Heavily influenced from an early age by Sixties country, Stax-era soul and gospel ranging from The Staple Singers to Otis Redding, Yola was raised in a small seaside town in the South West of the England and “always wanted to be a country music artist”. Unafraid to address difficult issues in her lyrics, Yola’s real-life story – both heartbreaking and inspirational – naturally finds its way into her songs. Coming from a poor, broken home and a parent suffering from mental illness who ‘banned’ her from making any music, Yola’s experience of growing up was one of truly living below the breadline. In a working class community in denial of its status where discrimination and even violence fuelled by racism were not unusual, writing music quickly became an outlet and a means of expression, and touring a means of escape.

She began her journey into Americana music performing with her band Phantom Limb, based in her hometown of Bristol. The band self-released the eponymous debut album and the later more country-leaning effort of The Pines produced by Marc Ford of The Black Crowes, taking to the road with acts such as Dr John, Solomon Burke and Candi Staton. Despite this success, Phantom Limb eventually disbanded, leaving Yola to focus on her own projects.

In celebration of their 50th anniversary, pioneering English prog-rockers King Crimson is releasing 50 rare or unusual tracks from the band’s archives.
Starting on January 13th, the date the band was formed in the Fulham Palace Café in 1969, the band will release one track per week for the remaining 50 weeks of 2019. Commentary from King Crimson manager and producer David Singleton is included in every track’s introduction.
As the band’s website details: On the evening of Monday January 13th, 1969, King Crimson formally began rehearsals in the basement of the Fulham Palace Road Cafe. After hauling their equipment down the stairs into their cramped rehearsal room Greg Lake, Ian McDonald, Michael Giles, Robert Fripp plugged in their instruments and with Peter Sinfield operating lights and sound, played and worked on material for the next hour and a half.
By July of that year, the band was performing in Hyde Park on the same bill as The Rolling Stones to an audience of up to 500,000 people. By October, the debut album: “In the Court of the Crimson King” was in the Top 5 of the UK album charts, shortly followed by a top 30 position in the US album charts and a No 1 slot – replacing Abbey Road – in the Japanese international chart. By December, following a series of US concerts finishing at San Francisco’s Fillmore West, the band’s first line-up had imploded.
