Πιθανώς ν’ ακουγόταν υπερβολικό αν έλεγα πως αυτό που εξακολουθεί και σήμερα να συμβαίνει με τις library recordings δεν έχει προηγούμενο, καθώς οι «ηχοβιβλιοθήκες» πάντα αποτελούν την πιο κρυφή, την πιο απρόσμενη και εν τέλει την πιο cult πηγή του παγκόσμιου DJ-sampling.

Μπορεί στην Ελλάδα η χρήση των libraries να υπήρξε ανύπαρκτη ή μάλλον ασήμαντη –αν και, με την καλή διάθεση που με χαρακτηρίζει, θα μπορούσα να αποκαλέσω “greek libraries” τα τουριστικά άλμπουμ που παρήγαγε ο EOT στα χρόνια του ’70 π.χ.–, όμως στις περισσότερες δυτικοευρωπαϊκές χώρες, κυρίως στην Ιταλία, την τότε Δυτική Γερμανία, την Αγγλία, τη Γαλλία, την Ελβετία, το Βέλγιο κ.ά., όπως και σε κάποιες ανατολικές, αυτού του τύπου οι ηχογραφήσεις υπήρξαν «κοινή λογική» χρησιμεύοντας (είναι η λέξη κλειδί) σε πλήθος διαφορετικών εφαρμογών.

Αυτή ήταν και η ουσία των libraries, εξάλλου.

Να προσφέρουν έτοιμες μουσικές λύσεις για διαφημιστικά jingles, για επενδύσεις εμπορικών ή άλλων εκδηλώσεων, για κάλυψη τηλεοπτικών ή κινηματογραφικών παραγωγών, χωρίς αυτό να σημαίνει πως ορισμένες φορές δεν προέβαλαν και κάποια συνολικότερη άποψη των εκάστοτε συνθετών, εν είδει μουσικής αυτοδυναμίας.

Τέτοια θρυλικά σχεδόν library άλμπουμ είναι π.χ. το “Rythmes Contemporains” [FR. Montparnasse 2000] του Janko Nilovic από το 1973, το “Love That” [GER. Selected Sound] των Roland Kovac New Set από το 1971, το “Moonshade” [UK. De Wolfe] των Roger Webb Sound, από το 1971 επίσης, και δεκάδες άλλα...

Τα τρία αυτά labels που προανέφερα (Montparnasse 2000, Selected Sound, De Wolfe), καθώς επίσης η CAM στην Ιταλία, η Ring Musik στη Δυτική Γερμανία (με τα υπο-labels Golden Ring και Happy), η KPM, η Bruton Music και η Chappell στη Βρετανία υπήρξαν κάποια από τα πιο σημαντικά του χώρου, ενώ και πολυεθνικές εταιρείες, όπως η Polydor π.χ., είχαν συμμετοχή στις εγγραφές βιβλιοθήκης.

Εκείνο που προξενεί εντύπωση, πάντως, και σε πρώτη φάση, είναι τα covers των LP με library recordings, τα οποία, γενικώς, είναι απίθανα.

Ace’s 2016 compilation Shazam! collects 24 of these instrumentals, all written by Hazlewood and many produced by the pop maverick, too. Hazlewood had a cinematic ear rivaled only by arranger Jack Nitzsche and, unsurprisingly, they’re responsible for the best moments here: singles that play as if all the splendor of a B movie were condensed into a 7″ single. Compared to that,the cheerful, generic surfers can’t help but pale, but even knockoffs of Eddy hits by the Rhythm Rockers and the Lively Ones showcase Hazlewood’s knack for melodramatic melodies. Still, Shazam! is the most fun when it’s overheated: when the studio orchestras swing with a smirk and the brass smears the tune, knowing that the feel itself is the hook.

Mathieu Boogaerts is an acclaimed French alternative singer/songwriter whose eclectic style draws from Afro-pop and reggae as well as indie electronica and folk music. Born in 1970 in Fontenay-sous-Bois, Île-de-France, France, he made his commercial recording debut in 1995 with the four-track maxi-single Ondulé Spécial on Remark Records, followed shortly thereafter by his accompanying full-length album debut, Super (1996). After switching to the label Disc’AZ, Boogaerts again released a maxi-single, the five-track Version Simple (Et Version Compliquée) (1998), in advance of his full-length effort, J’en Ai Marre d’Être Deux (1998). Featuring a memorably folky Michael Jackson medley, "Beat It/Billie Jean," J’en Ai Marre d’Être Deux was a commercial breakthrough for the alternative singer/songwriter, reaching number 67 on the French albums chart. In the wake of this breakthrough success, Boogaerts released a live album, Mathieu Boogaerts en Public (2000), and advanced to another label, the prestigious Warner Music France subsidiary Tôt ou Tard, on which he released the album 2000 (2002). Reaching number 25 on the French albums chart, 2000 marked the growing popularity of Boogaerts, and a November 2002 concert performance at Le Lavoir Moderne Parisien in Paris was filmed and later released on DVD as 2000 en Concert "Solo" (2003) in order to accommodate his expanding fan base. While the successive albums Michel (2005) and I Love You (2008) were less successful commercially, neither breaking into the Top 50 of the French albums chart, they found Boogaerts moving in new directions creatively and were generally well received among critics as well as fans. In addition to his album output, Boogaerts is featured multiple times on the Tôt ou Tard compilations Plutôt Tôt — Plutôt Tard (2005), a double-disc label showcase comprised of collaborations, and Le Grand Dîner (2006), an homage to Dick Annegarn.

This 20 track set shines on Derrick Harriott‘s productions during the heydays of rocksteady – 1966 to 1969. Later he concentrated more and more on soul inspired reggae, funk & soul tunes. The album Derrick Harriott Reggae Funk & Soul 1969-1975 presents a perceptive set of early ’70s recordings, interpreting the music of the American black consciousness movement in Kingston, Jamaica.
Derrick’s interpretation of the ultra classic Isaac Hayes tune “Shaft” here entitled “Black Moses”. The singer is The Preacher, probably better known as Enos McLeod. The soul groove keeps on coming with a romantic tune by The Chosen Few,”People Make the World Go Round”. The Chosen Few were really big Stylistics fans and this interpretation of the 1971 Stylistics classic features a jazzy, George Benson-like guitar solo. The Chosen Few return later on the album with “Am I Black Enough” which happens to be a majestic take on Billy Paul’s single (from his successful album 360 Degrees of Billy Paul) from 1973. The third cut from The Chosen Few is “Going Back Home”. A funky Temptations-esque groove killer referring to the ideas of the Black Power Movement from the late ’60s and early ’70s. What a difference when you check out the groups sweet rocksteady tune “I’m Sorry”, probably recorded during the late rocksteady period. The group’s lead vocalist Noel “Bunny” Brown does a sweet reggae do-over of “By the Time I Get to Phoenix”. The song was an enormous hit for country music singer Glen Campbell in 1967. More funky grooves as Derrick Harriott & The Chosen Few perform “Psychedelic Train”, a tune that was a Jamaican #1 hit in 1970.

Digitally remastered edition of this 1972 album including digital download. 13 was never supposed to be a Lee Hazlewood album. It is perhaps the strangest record in one of the most varied discographies in music. The bombastic brass heavy funk, deep blues and soul paired with Hazlewood’s subterranean baritone would be best enjoyed with a tall Chivas in an off-strip seedy Vegas lounge. By 1972 Lee Hazlewood had settled in his new homeland of Sweden. His days were spent carousing, making movies with Torbjörn Axelman and releasing albums. To keep up his prolific recorded output, Lee began to mine the recently defunct LHI Records archives for material. One such gem, was an unreleased album by Larry Marks. In what became the final days of LHI, staff producer Larry Marks’ sonic fingerprints were on nearly everything; songwriting, producing, arranging, and singing. His most profound contribution was steering the creative direction of the label towards soul and R&B, arranging the downright funky LHI singles by Barbara Randolph and Jon Christian. Larry’s concept was to take Hazlewood’s strongest compositions and arrange them in a soul vibe. An album was completed, but with no distribution in America and no funding, Lee had no vehicle to release Larry’s record. The tapes were taken to Sweden, Larry’s voice was wiped and Hazlewood’s was dubbed…13 was born.
