5 ιδιαίτερα ελληνικά άλμπουμ που κυκλοφόρησαν προς το τέλος του 2016, δίχως να προλάβουν τις λίστες με τα «καλύτερα»
Οι δίσκοι που κυκλοφορούν τον Δεκέμβριο αδικούνται – σε σχέση με τις λίστες, με τα “best of” της χρονιάς. Είτε δεν προλαβαίνουμε να τους ακούσουμε, είτε προλαβαίνουμε κάπως ζορισμένα, δίχως, πάντως, το όποιο «βάρος» τους να μπορεί να «κάτσει» γερά μέσα μας. Κι επειδή, παραδοσιακά, τα άλμπουμ που κυκλοφορούν αυτήν ακριβώς την εποχή δεν είναι λίγα αξίζει, νομίζω, να ρίξουμε μια ματιά σε μερικά απ’ αυτά που έχουν και μιαν ιδιαίτερη αξία.

ΓΙΩΡΓΟΣ ΚΟΝΤΡΑΦΟΥΡΗΣ: Στοιχειωμένα Ποιήματα [Puzzlemusik, 2017]
Χαίρομαι, γιατί ο Γιώργος Κοντραφούρης ανεβαίνει τα σκαλιά της τέχνης του πάντα βελτιούμενος. Δεν μπορείς να το πεις αυτό για κάθε μουσικό της ηλικίας του (όχι πως τον ίδιον τον πήραν τα χρόνια!), κι επειδή για τον Κοντραφούρη ισχύει, συμβαίνει, θα πρέπει να το μετρήσουμε δεόντως κάνοντάς το γνωστό και σαφές.
Το «Στοιχειωμένα Ποιήματα» (που δεν είναι καθόλου στοιχειωμένα μεταξύ μας – πιθανώς να εννοείται πως στοίχειωσαν θαμμένα σε κάποιο συρτάρι δεκαετίες τώρα) είναι, βασικά, μια σειρά έξι ορχηστρικών, τα οποία ξεπηδούν μέσα από έξι αντίστοιχα ποιήματα. Ποιήματα τα οποία γράφτηκαν σε νεαρή ηλικία από τον πιανίστα και συνθέτη και τα οποία γίνονται γνωστά, τώρα, για πρώτη φορά. Τα ποιήματα είναι σύντομα, ελεύθερα, αποτελούμενα από λίγους στίχους, περιγράφουν σκέψεις, και απαγγέλλονται (ωραία) από τον Αλκίνοο Ιωαννίδη. Κάθε ποίημα έχει τη μουσική συνέχειά του – εκτός από την έσχατη «Στοιχειωμένη επανάληψη», που είναι μόνη της, χωρίς λέξεις να την περιγράφουν, εκεί στο τέλος του άλμπουμ.
Δίπλα στον Κοντραφούρη, που χειρίζεται πιάνο, fender rhodes, keyboards(και πέραν του Ιωαννίδη), παρατάσσονται ακόμη οι Πέτρος Κλαμπάνης κοντραμπάσο, Αλέξανδρος-Δράκος Κτιστάκης ντραμς και Άγγελος Πολυχρόνου κρουστά. Όλοι αυτοί μαζί συνεργάζονται αρμονικά, προκειμένου να δημιουργηθεί ένα από τα ωραιότερα ελληνικά τζαζ άλμπουμ, που ακούσαμε τον τελευταίο καιρό.
Το concept«τζαζ και ποίηση» είναι πολύ παλαιό (ας πούμε πως είναι προϊόν των fifties) και σε όλες τις δυνατές εκδοχές του έχει δώσει αριστουργήματα (δεν υπάρχει τώρα λόγος, εδώ, να μιλήσουμε γι’ αυτά… ας το κάνουμε ξεχωριστά). Το ότι είναι παλαιό, και το ότι αντέχει ακόμη, σημαίνει πως… κάτι συμβαίνει. Κάτι ενυπάρχει στην jazz και στην ποίηση, συχνά, που φέρνει δημιουργικώς κοντά αυτές τις δύο τέχνες. Κάπου τέμνεται δηλαδή ο ποιητικός λόγος, με μια μουσική που έχει τα χαρακτηριστικά του αυθόρμητου και του εν τω γεννάσθαι.
Ο Κοντραφούρης είναι δεινός αυτοσχεδιαστής, ενώ και ως συνθέτης δεν υπολείπεται σε έμπνευση και δύναμη. Χαρακτηριστικά τής συνθετικής ικανότητάς του είναι το μελωδικό όραμα και βεβαίως η γκρούβα, το ρυθμικό στοιχείο των κομματιών του, που σε διαπερνά σαν ρεύμα, σπρώχνοντάς σε στη φανταστική σου πίστα. Στα «Στοιχειωμένα Ποιήματα» και τα δύο αυτά χαρακτηριστικά τής τέχνης και τής τεχνικής του είναι παρόντα. Συνθέσεις και αυτοσχεδιασμοί με εσωτερική συνοχή και παλμό, που σε δονούν ακόμη και όταν κάθεσαι στην καρέκλα του γραφείου σου, όπως για παράδειγμα το track number 10 «Νομίζοντας ότι», που αποτελεί συνέχεια του φερώνυμου ποιήματος («Ντροπή νιώθεις/ -νομίζεις ότι δεν σου αξίζουν- /Αυτά που σου δίνουν/Φόβος είναι/ -νομίζεις ότι σου αξίζουν-/ Μα/ ΝΤΡΕΠΕΣΑΙ») ή το δωδέκατο «Τοπίο του πάντοτε».
Τζαζ λοιπόν. Τζαζ σύγχρονη, ζωντανή, μελετημένη, με αναφορές ευρωπαϊκές και αμερικάνικες, ερμηνευμένη τέλεια από μια ομάδα μουσικών, που μπορεί να διαπρέπει (και διαπρέπει) παντού και οπουδήποτε.
COSTIS DRYGIANAKIS: Wings of Winds [Granny Records, 2016]
Ο Κωστής Δρυγιανάκης το τερμάτισε. Ηχογράφησε ένα κομμάτι 50 λεπτά και μας πήρε το σκαλπ. Το “Wings of Winds” είναι ένα trackτο οποίο δεν είναι εύκολο να περιγραφεί – όχι γιατί δεν υπάρχει σώνει και καλά κάποιο concept, όσο γιατί η μεγάλη διάρκειά του προϋποθέτει το να μην ξεχνάς τι έχει προηγηθεί. Κι αυτό αποτελεί ένα ζόρι, για τον ακροατή. Τον θέτει, εννοώ, προ ενός διλήμματος. Ν’ ακούσει, να ξανακούσει, και να… ματαξανακούσει το CD, κατ’ αρχάς συνεχώς και εν συνεχεία κατά τόπους, και μάλιστα επαναληπτικά, προκειμένου να αντιληφθεί τι επιχειρεί εδώ ο Δρυγιανάκης. Θα το πράξει (ο ακροατής); Αυτό είναι το ερώτημα. Εγώ θα την πω την αμαρτία μου – για να ξεμπερδέψω κάπως εύκολα, έχοντας ακούσει το άλμπουμ τέσσερις φορές.

Descended from shipwrecked African slaves and the Island Caribs of St Vincent, the Garifuna faced imprisonment and exile in the late 18th century, eventually finding home in Honduras, Belize, Guatemala and Nicaragua.
Darandi is a collection of Aurelio’s favourite songs from his career recorded to capture the sound of his incendiary live performances.
Aurelio is is a master of the paranda, a style based around the acoustic guitar that often draws comparisons to the blues for its often bittersweet melodies and sharp social commentary concealed within songs about everyday life. Although not as well known as Cuban son or Colombian cumbia,…
…it is without doubt one of the continent’s great music traditions; a style deeply African and Latin American at once.
Over the course of his three studio albums (Garifuna Soul, Laru Beya, and Landini), Aurelio set out to make a difference for the Garifuna people. By sharing Garifuna music with the wider world, he could bring attention the challenges that his people are facing. For instance, the Garifuna in Honduras and beyond have been undergoing a fierce struggle over land ownership. As it happens, their seaside villages are located on postcard-perfect beaches. As Honduras seeks to grow its tourism industry, those lands are coming under pressure from powerful business and government interests. Garifuna leaders have been harassed and even assassinated for speaking up, and conflicts over ancestral lands have made their way to international court. The more people beyond Central America know about the Garifuna, the more pressure is put on the Honduran government to protect them.
Unlike his previous albums, painstakingly recorded one overdub at a time at the Stonetree Studios in Belize, Darandi captures the unfiltered sound of Aurelio’s incendiary live performances, accompanied by some of the Garifuna world’s brightest musical talents. The album was recorded while Aurelio was visiting the UK for a performance at WOMAD Charlton Park. After the festival, Aurelio and his band visited Real World Studios, and laid down the record, completely live. He packed the whole band and their gear into a single room. “We got into a zone where we felt like we were in our own community, playing Garifuna music for our people. It was a special feeling,” says Aurelio.
As Aurelio sees it, this is an album that closes a cycle in his career, representing the culmination of 30 years of composing and performing paranda music. The album consists of the songs from his extensive catalog that have proven to be his biggest hits, the songs he plays most frequently while touring throughout the world. They range from Yalifu, a gorgeous lament to his childhood separation from his father from his first album, to Landini, the swinging title track from his third record.

Stalwarts of the British Indie Scene, The Blue Aeroplanes are back in the game with this their 12th album, Welcome Stranger!
Gerard Langley who is the voice and central mainstay of the band (besides original drummer John Langley) has a unique vocal that falls between the languid terse of Mark E Smith and the softness of Guy Chadwick. His spoken word presentation and beat-poet approach to writing along with an unbridled toughness and resilience to not give up on the band is a remarkable achievement which is not to be scoffed at considering their lengthy time in the fashionista music industry.
Their own blend of indie, rock and post punk hasn’t dated one iota and when opener ‘Looking for X’s on a map’ hits the floor with a swagger befitting a gang of 20 somethings with its chest plumage pumped up and Langley’s curt delivery licking round the back of your ear holes makes for a startling youthful and electric opening. The fat free arrangement keeps on coming with the cocky ‘Sweet, like chocolate’, a ringing guitar and jolting rhythms compliment the vocals seamlessly,‘Retro Moon’ tells the story of love both new and old and Langley’s world weary take on the world is carried by a virile slice of organ and accompanied harmonies that emanate a band glad to be back and happy to share and seduce us with their spirited return, renewed confidence and passion. ‘Dead Tree! Dead Tree! has a bucketful of jangle and Langley’s vocal dictates the play the way Iniesta has dictated the Spanish midfield for the past decade: “Try to be good try to be kind….it’s not the symbol of anything, dead tree, dead tree….it will still mean something to me”.
