Elza SoaresThough Elza Soares‘ name may not be a familiar name to most Anglos, the singer — whose career spans 7 decades — is beloved in Brazil, particularly among women, the poor, minorities, and the LGBT community. Born in a favela, she was sold by her father at age 12 for marriage. She won a talent show at 15 and began singing in clubs, but was often forced from stages because of her skin color. At 21, she was already a mother of three, had lost a child, and became a widow. She became a musical star in the late 1950s, but in the ’60s she was the scourge of the press because of her relationship with a famous soccer player. The pair were exiled in 1966 by Brazil’s military junta. After her partner died and she lost a second child, she resurrected her career.
Soares has carried a torch for samba, but she’s…

…also embraced jazz, rock, funk, and hip-hop. When award-winning producer Guilherme Kastrup (Badi Assad, Bruno Morais, Zeca Baleiro) approached her to record an album, he envisioned classic sambas with radical new arrangements. She wanted to cut an album about “sex and blackness.” After 38 previous albums, this set is her first of new original material. Kastrup enlisted players and songwriters from the samba sugo (“dirty samba”) scene, including members of Passo Torto, Bixia 70, Mena Mena, and her longtime collaborator Jose Miguel Wisnik. The Woman at the End of the World (A Mulher Do Fim Do Mundo) is a jarring, brash, soulful, deeply moving recording. Soares delivers unflinching, jagged 21st century samba songs that detail a Brazilian life not seen by tourists. Their themes are about slavery, survival against all odds, unquenchable desire, racism, violence against women, gay, and transgender people, prostitution, loss and loneliness, and rage. There is so much happening musically it is dizzying initially, almost impossible to contain. In “Pra Fuder,” electro-acoustic samba is framed by a clattering, bleating acid funk that recalls the Pop Group as it meets Fela’s charging multi-horn grooves and swagger. In Celso Sims’ “Benedita,” the composer duets with Soares. It’s a rhythm collision where samba, jazz, and the punky friction of Gang of Four rub against one another, break apart, and recombine. The multi-part narrative details drug addiction, persecution of transgender and poor people by the police and celebrates the holiness of the oppressed. In the title track, amid cellos and drums and electronics, she renders a sultry samba that reflects loss, change and endurance: “…I am/I go on/Singing/’Til the end…”

Soares goes into her belly to deliver these lyrics (English translations are provided). She is passionate and commands the full measure of her grainy but disciplined contralto. The Woman at the End of the World is Soares’ howl of pain, witness, and resistance that refuses all apologies and compromises. It’s so nakedly emotional and powerful, it is ultimately an anthem. — AMG

“Wishbone” is the eagerly awaited 3rd studio recording of 2012 Blues Music Award Winner for Bassist of the Year, Biscuit Miller. The title track was inspired by Biscuit’s two grandsons Jordan and Josh who were excited about making a wish when they got their hands on the turkey wishbone during Thanksgiving dinner. Their excitement sparked an idea in Biscuit’s ever creative mind, and he literally began singing and writing the song on the spot! He then jammed with his grandsons in his music room after dinner. That special day with his family and the birth of a song were all the motivation Biscuit needed to get back into the studio to begin working on “Wishbone.”

YES DEER: Get your Glitter Jacket [Be Coq, Gaffer Records, Insula Music, 2015]
    F.A.T.: Animal [Be Coq, 2016]

Carlos del Junco is a Cuban-Canadian harmonica musician. He specializes in playing the ten hole diatonic harmonica. He was taught to play chromatically by using an “overblow” technique taught to him by Howard Levy, a jazz virtuoso. In 1993, he won two gold medals at the Hohner World Harmonica Championship held in Trossingen, Germany. He was judged world’s best in both the diatonic blues category and the diatonic jazz category.

Mr. Bowskill, a multi-talented, young man hailing from Bailieboro, has been entertaining crowds with his incredibly advanced bluesy guitar riffs since he was 11 years old. His first CD, ‘Old Soul’, in 2003, reflected his youthful talent and strong, rich vocals. His second CD, ‘Soap Bars and Dog Ears’, was nominated for a Juno when he was 13, making him the youngest individual to be nominated for the award. Mr. Bowskill has toured Canada and Europe for years. He had the opportunity to play with two premier guitar players, Jeff Beck and Joe Bonamassa, in Germany, billed as the Three Js. He has opened for Dr. John, Buddy Guy, and Wishbone Ash. Currently, he is based in Port Hope and performs regularly with his band, The Jimmy Bowskill Band.

Nominated for Maple Leaf Blues Awards 2016 Acoustic Act of The Year and Harmonica Player of The Year. A dose of roots, country and pop infused blues from two masters of their craft.

Alfredo RodriguezAlfredo Rodriguez left Cuba for the United States seven years ago. The classically-trained pianist and composer has been mentored and produced by music legend Quincy Jones.
Leaving Cuba opened up the world to Rodriguez, and globalism is most of what you hear on his new album, Tocororo. There’s flamenco and tango and Bach; there’s also an international cast of musicians, most enchantingly the Indian singer Ganavya, who soars over Rodriguez’s piano trio on the title track.
What distinguishes Rodriguez’s globalism is his ability to both compose and perform into a kind of ecstasy. Like most Cuban musicians, he can handle polyrhythms, and he uses them like a kaleidoscope, combining and shifting meters to bring new reflections and moods to his music.

    111 MB  320 ** FLAC

When Rodriguez does look back to Cuba on this album, it’s with songs that are not so familiar abroad. The 1990s hit “Sabanas Blancas” is a love song to Havana and the emblematic white sheets that hang on its balconies. In Rodriguez’s inventive arrangement, his thumping piano groove repeats under the duo Ibeyi’s Afro-Cuban vocals.

The music develops parallel to the song’s lyrics, gaining force and dimension verse by verse. Rodriguez isn’t nostalgically dreaming about home here; he wants to create a musical ritual powerful enough to conjure Havana right there in the recording studio.

Tocororo is equal parts sophistication and sincerity. It’s the sound of a prodigiously talented Cuban embracing the wider world of music. Best of all, the album resonates with the possibility of all the other new music we’ll discover as Cuba itself opens up to the world.
