Amira Medunjanin – Damar (2016)
Amira Medunjanin is the finest exponent of sevdah, the melancholy and emotional folk music of Bosnia, and is remarkable not just for her clear, pained voice, but for the way she balances respect for ancient styles with experiment. She started out with a fine local band, the Mostar Sevdah Reunion, but then teamed up with jazz pianist and producer Bojan Z and began to expand her range.
Their latest album together includes powerful and passionate traditional material, including an exquisite old song from Sarajevo and jaunty Serbian folk tunes. Elsewhere, her songs are transformed by Bojan’s sometimes furious and edgy piano flourishes, or the flamenco-influenced guitar of Boško Jović. And on the title track, a slow and theatrical piece written by Jović, she takes on…
…a new musical personality, now singing in a deep, breathy style against edgy and jazzy piano chords. — guardian

What’s Playing in Chicago?
New York may be home base for Afropop Worldwide, but the world music scene has many homes throughout the world. In this post, we recognize what’s poppin’ over in Chi-town.
Angel D’Cuba
Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music is one of the best world music presenters in the city and for 2017 they are holding nothing back. On Jan. 20, Old Town School hosted a World Music Party featuring DJ Bashert and Angel D’Cuba, a former lead singer with Cuban group Mezcal. D’Cuba is known for his use of original songs juxtaposed with creative arrangements, bringing together genres like salsa, timba, calypso, cumbia, funk, soul, jazz and more.
Dobet Gnahoré
This February’s Global Music Party will feature Planeta Azul, a collection of artists led by Luciano Antonio, performing original interpretations of Brazilian classics with the Passistas Samba Dancers. Keep your eye on their website for even more world-renowned artists in upcoming months, like the 50-year celebration of the all-male South African a cappella group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Dobet Gnahoré, Ivorian vocalist and dancer who has often been compared to the likes of “Lauryn Hill…India.Arie and…Erykah Badu” (St. Louis American) will also be part of the February lineup.
